Senior Spotlight : Elizabeth McLellan
An Article by English Teacher Aaron Cass

Who doesn't love that smile? The world would be a better place if more people were like Elizabeth. Whatever she does, she owns it, and does it with all her heart. She is kind, hard-working, and compassionate beyond her years. It really has been my pleasure to get to know her these last few years.
Elizabeth is impressively responsible. In her time here at Sanborn, she has played varsity soccer, run indoor and outdoor track, helped coach basketball and soccer, and volunteered at Camp Lincoln. While maintaining excellent grades, she has held down multiple jobs as well as helping with her mom's accounting business, which she plans to continue as a side-line job in college. She does it all, and she does it well.
Elizabeth has a REMARKABLY specific life plan: she wants to be a forensic accountant for the FBI. She told me that this would be the ideal job for her because she gets to work in law enforcement, work with numbers (clearly I had a big effect on her as an English teacher, lol), and gets to be her own boss. At this point she has whittled her way down to three schools: Western New England University, University of Maine - Oreno, and her top pick, Roger Williams. If all goes well, 10 years from now Elizabeth will be living in Providence, working for the FBI, and continuing to take care of business. Good luck, Elizabeth!
Senior Spotlight : Lauren Lanseigne
An Article by English Teacher Ashley Harbel

Lauren Lanseigne is one of the most genuine students I have had the pleasure of working with in my 11 years of teaching. Though I did not have Lauren as a student in English, I have been lucky to work with Lauren as one of the Class of 2018 advisors in Student Council. Lauren has shown tremendous growth over the three years I have known her, moving from a shy, quiet student, to someone that has been able to overcome her nerves and shine. A perfect example of this was when Lauren took on the role of Hillary Clinton in last year's mock election.  Lauren Petraitis, English teacher, had the pleasure of having Lauren both Sophomore and Junior year.  Ms. Petraitis has also seen Lauren's growth over the past several years, "She has taken risks that she initially would have been hesitant to take- and these have brought out a plethora of strengths that I'm not sure she knew she had. She questions, criticizes, and immerses herself in all that she learns- while maintaining a professional approach."

Since Freshman year, Lauren has thrown herself into bettering our school and leaving her mark on Sanborn.  She has been part of the Student Council, Class Council, Diversity Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and our school's Justice Committee.  She has also filled any "free" time she has had left with working at the YMCA and with dance.  Despite the full and busy schedule, Lauren always has time for those that need her.   She is someone that can be relied on, someone that can be trusted, and someone that will always show up, even if it means taking time away from herself.  Lauren is looking to pursue a degree in Political Science, with a focus on a career as a Press Secretary or Speech Writer.  I know whatever she decides to pursue, she will put her all into and succeed.

College Overview for Juniors Presented by NHHEAF
A Message From the Counseling Office

February 19th is the kickoff of the college process for the class of 2019.  At 6pm in the SRHS library the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) will present their overview of the college process.  During this presentation Juniors and their parents will be given information regarding the college search process, how to make the most of college visits,  what to expect in your senior year, and a financial aid preview.

The presentation will also  include information on Bachelor to Master's program, dual admission programs and test optional schools.  We will also talk about the application process, the extras such as portfolios and NCAA as well as the senior year timeline.  In addition, you will learn the difference between Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision and Rolling Admissions.

Finally, we will talk about the difference between the parent's role and the role of the student in the process.  The information will be valuable and timely.  Juniors will attend the  student kickoff program on March 6 and college labs will be scheduled with guidance counselors soon after.

No registration is required for this program.  We look forward to seeing you on the 19th.

A Message From the Counseling Office

As always, please email your child's counselor if you have any questions.

March 16 Converted to Student Day
A Message From Superintendent Thomas Ambrose

In an effort to help account for lost instructional time due to weather cancellations this year, the Sanborn Regional School District has decided to make March 16, 2018 a student day. This day was previously scheduled as a teacher workshop day.

At Sanborn Regional High School, this day has been designated as a "B" day for the bell schedule.

Joe Duball's High School Basketball: Sanborn girls gather momentum

When he took over last season, Sanborn of Kingston girls' basketball coach  Brian Gray made being in the hunt every year his goal.

So far so good for Gray and the Indians, who are 29-8 over two seasons, and 14-3 as they head into their regular-season finale today. They'll finish fourth with a win.

This is the time of year most teams are cashing in on momentum developed during their early-season slate. The Indians are drawing back even further and simply realizing their potential these days, according to Gray.

"We want to be a team everyone is always talking about in the playoffs and already qualifying for the postseason here for the second year in a row helps that idea," said Gray, whose club was 5-13 in the season before he took over. "It's a fantasy, really. We weren't even thinking playoffs my first eight years here. Our program just wasn't there yet.

"We have the kids pick it up while adopting their own identity here. This isn't even a repeat of last year. The kids came in and identified what they needed to do to continue the success. We just keep building and trying to peak from where we originally were."

Among the notable tweaks to this version of the Indians is a more concerted effort from beyond the 3-point line. Sanborn is averaging around eight 3-point attempts a game for the season. Gray said last year's leading 3-point shooter had taken an estimated seven treys through the first five weeks of the season.

"We play a lot of zones during our schedule so having the 3-pointer makes people come out and attack us now," Gray said. "It's opened up the inside and really given us what we've been looking for. When the offense is flowing, we're making it tough because we really move that ball around to make teams work. Being able to go in and out lets us capitalize more on that."

There is a sense of balance across the board for Sanborn. Gray's picture-perfect effort from his Indians involves as many as six players scoring somewhere between 8-10 points. The players have learned and know better than to rely on one person to carry them.

"I really try to believe in them as a whole, which means looking to everyone for a play," Gray said. "The way we run our offense isn't about staggering screens for one player. It's having everyone work together to get opportunities for each other. You'll never hear me say somebody can't shoot and someone else needs to double up. They can take the shots that are available."

The balance comes due in large to the Indians playing and realizing their roles. Guards  Bri Center and  Sophie Merry-Carriero get the offense rolling. Center offers a little bit of everything in terms of her skills while Merry-Carriero is one of the best threats Sanborn has from beyond the arc and makes all the right decisions within the offense.

Ellen McGough has hit 46 3-pointers while averaging 11.5 points a game as a freshman.  Skyla Shibel and  Madison Lovely are defensive cogs, combining for eight blocks in last Friday's loss to Conant. Lovely is also good for double-digit rebounds on a nightly basis, according to Gray.

The problem looming over Sanborn when it comes to contention are those teams that have the track record the Indians are striving for. Sanborn's three losses this season have come against perennial D-III contenders Conant, Hopkinton and Gilford. Gray admits that the Indians' schedule has felt more competitive compared with last season.

"We still have to find the experiences and playoff atmospheres to get us over the hump," Gray said. "There's no doubt with our players that they can play at that level. We're not looking at getting outplayed for four quarters anymore.

"We had the tough loss (to Conant) on Friday and then they come in (Monday) ready to work. We talked about the stuff we learned and got right to work on it. That's the experience and attitude we need to set us up for good things in the playoffs."
