7th and 8th Grade Trips a Success!

Good morning,

One of the things that makes Wayland Middle School so special are our grade level trips. Our sixth grade travels to Walden Pond in the fall and the spring, and recently our 8th grade visited Washington, D.C. and the 7th grade traversed to Cape Cod. We are the only middle school in the Boston area that does such amazing trips.

Our 8th graders spent four amazing days down in Washington, D.C. We spent 8 hours on Amtrak, but it was time well spent getting to know one another even better. We were able to visit the new African-American Museum, the Holocaust Museum, almost every President and war memorial, and even had time to take in a Potomac National baseball game. Thank you to our house leaders for putting together another memorable trip with great weather included. When I tell people that we head to DC with over 200 students, they cannot believe that we pull it off. This obviously cannot be executed without our great leadership team! Their whole year planning pays off with everyone from Social Studies teachers to English teachers chipping in and helping out.

The following week, the 7th grade made its way down to the Cape. Despite the challenging weather, kids and adults alike were wearing smiles consistently and discovering the wonders of nature.  We all dug deep and made lemonade out of the lemons mother nature was serving.  I had so much fun watching students take risks, branch out, and make new connections. Students were really gelling as a group and embodying the best of BERT.  It was magical to see and reminds me why we take these trips.   A special shout out to our amazing leaders, Michael, Susan and Stacey who attended to the myriad of details necessary to pull off such an excursion.

Thank you for making Wayland such a special community,

Betsy and George

From the Wellness Dept: All Grades -  Fitness Testing
WMS Wellness Classes
June 5th - 16th

Fitness Testing will take place June 5th - June 16th.  Please have your children bring in appropriate clothing and an inhaler if needed.

If your child has a history of exercise-induced asthma and has an inhaler in the nurse's office, please remind him/her to see the nurse 20 - 30 minutes before pacer  testing  to pick up the inhaler and bring to Wellness class.  If your child does not have an inhaler at school, then please provide the nurse with a WPS medication order form so that your child may use his or her inhaler while at school. The Wellness Staff would also like to ask all families to be sure their children eat breakfast and stay hydrated especially on  fitness  testing  days.   This testing is vigorous  and failure to eat or drink adequate amounts of fluids can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fainting. Thank you!

We utilize the FitnessGram protocol found HERE.

PTO
Room to Read
Volunteers Needed!

Ms. Jacobs, WMS’s Literacy Specialist, and her students have been working diligently over the past few years to raise $7,000 to build a WMS library somewhere in a developing country through Room to Read.  Here's a brief video describing the organization. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNhLgn1VsG4&t=69sThe students make and sell hair ties, and each Spring they hold a book swap/sale at WMS.  Ms. Jacobs is retiring this year and everyone is really hoping to reach the $7,000 mark to build a library in her honor.

We need volunteers to staff the Room to Read checkout table as classes come to visit. Did you love volunteering at the Book Fair or in the Library when your student was in elementary school?  Then this is for you!  Grab a friend and sign up for a shift or two!

We are using SignUp.com (formerly VolunteerSpot.com) to organize volunteers.  You do not need an account – only your email address to sign up.  Visit: http://signup.com/go/rmWmaDu to sign up.  There are shifts both during the school day, as well as on both D.C. Night and Cape Cod Night.  Thanks for your help!
