The Spring Share has come to an end. Please take a look around your house for any crates that may still need to be returned. We will need to collect all of the crates this week to ensure that we have enough for the main season vegetable shares so please plan to bring some bags to transfer your share into at your pick up.
Thank you!
Farm Notes:
Strawberries just beginning to blush
Planting continues on the farm. This week we will be transplanting the first batch of early Fall cabbage, romanesco, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and winter squash. Late last week we set out the sweet potatoes and the second round of melon transplants. All the new transplants are doing very well in the fields. The cool, cloudy, showery weather is guaranteeing that the transplants can extend out their roots before they succumb to the strong sun of a sunny day. What a difference this is to last year when every day was sunny and we needed to have the irrigation sprinklers set up before we planted to help ensure that there was enough moisture in the ground for the new plants.
As a result of this cloudy weather there will be a slower start to the season. But once things get going, the harvests look sweet and abundant. The spinach is loving this cool weather and spinach harvest will be extended as long as the heat stays away. The cool loving kale and swiss chard are getting bigger by the day. The greenhouse tomatoes are happy not to be overly hot as a June greenhouse often is. The first strawberries are just beginning to show a tint of reddening. The number of berries in the patch is awesome. We will decide by mid-week if we need to postpone strawberry day to ensure better picking. The raspberries in the high tunnel are enjoying the warmer temperatures of their indoor environment and should be ready in a couple of weeks.
The following items may make an appearance in your shares this week. The actual contents of your share may differ based on harvest conditions. As always Mother Nature ultimately dictates what is available.
Thanks to generous donations by you (CSA members) to the Groundwork Share-A-Shareâ„¢ fund, we were able to subsidize the cost of shares in 2016 for over thirty individuals and families, as well as shares for local food pantries.
