Renovation records to be smashed with Queensland's strong value for money to draw millions
RENOVATION activity is expected to hit a record $8.8b nationally, with Queensland to see a 7 per cent surge because of its strong value for money, according to latest forecasts.
Forecasts given to The Courier-Mail by Master Builders Australia has Queensland hitting $1.468b worth of alterations and additions activity in the 2018-2019 year, before rising 6 per cent to $1.556b the following year and then peaking at $1.618b in 2020.
Master Builders Australia's national economics manager Matthew Pollock said a new decade high was expected to be reached at $8.8b nationally with Queensland among states to "see the strongest growth".
He expected the rise to be a boon for thousands of tradies in the state after 2016-17's -7.9 per cent drop in renovation activity to $1.345b.
Television reno queen Cherie Barber, who was in Brisbane yesterday for her packed-out Renovating for Profit seminar, said many people were looking now to invest in Brisbane because of its strong value for money and "Queensland also has the cheapest tradies".
"We've got the right type of house here, perfect weather for renovating, the cheapest tradies, lots of beautiful Queenslanders, there are lots of houses ripe here for renovation so it's got all the right elements."
She said the cost of moving was an issue, with many people now looking at investment properties.
"A lot of people are not moving home now, obviously there are exit costs, there are entry costs for a new home. They are big costs so a lot of people are staying put in their family home, buying investment properties, they are getting in and renovating, they are extending, I think it's great."
She warned that renovating for profit was very different to renovating your home to live in.
"They watch the TV shows and they get bamboozled by the before and after designs, and that's not what renovating or profit is all about," Ms Barber said.
"It's about being strategic in your due diligence, finding the right type of property, in the right suburb, at the right price, spending the right amount of money on the property, renovating it with changes that do add value as opposed to those that don't and obviously then selling or renting it for the highest price possible. It's a very disciplined approach."

Adam Levine unloads estate for $18M, Harvey Weinstein lists a home for rent

Adam Levine sold his home in the Holmby Hills neighborhood for $18 million, the same price he paid for it last summer.
The French Regency-style home spans 9,200 square feet and includes a two-story guesthouse, the Los Angeles Times reported. Five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms and a breakfast solarium can be found inside, while a swimming pool and pool house complete the outside.
Levine listed the property for sale in November for $18.9 million.
Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie producer accused of sexual assault by numerous women, is renting a West Hollywood home he owns for $7,500 per month. The renovated 1,400-square-foot pad includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, library and backyard that comes equipped with fruit trees. A corporate entity tied to Weinstein purchased the place for $1.55 million in late 2015, Variety reported.
Former NBA player Al Harrington listed his home in Calabasas for $4.9 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 30,000-square-foot home includes five bedrooms, sports court, playground, an outdoor kitchen and spa. The ex-Indiana Pacer paid roughly $3.9 million for it three years ago, records show. Harrington also played for a number of other teams, including the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks.

Elle King paid $1.72 million for a house in the Hollywood Hills. Spanning just under 3,500 square feet, the residence includes four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Outside, a backyard with eucalyptus and citrus trees complete the property.
