A Message from the Superintendent
A national tragedy creates heightened awareness for school safety, security.
Dr. Lynn Panega

The Lake Park High School community is experiencing tremendous sadness as we try to understand the horrific event that occurred this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones. Our hearts and thoughts are with those who have been devastated by this senseless loss of children and colleagues.

During this difficult time, I want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff is always the highest priority of the administrative team. Lake Park is grateful to have such strong partnerships with local law enforcement agencies who annually review our comprehensive crisis plans and conduct active threat drills.

Training prepares Lake Park employees for critical responses to unthinkable situations. Through active participation, our staff members have been empowered to make independent decisions with limited information that safeguard students during active threats. The daily presence of West Campus School Resource Officer Schwytzer and East Campus School Resource Officer Forrest further demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to district safety.

Students also engage in purposeful actions each fall during "Safety Week" that includes reviewing expectations during lockdown procedures and physically walking evacuation routes from classrooms. Conducting regular drills during the school day is designed is to educate students and ensure their understanding of what to do in an emergency situation.

As additional security measures, Lake Park locks all entrances, requires visitor screening and registration through two sets of interlocking glass doors to protect the vestibule, and utilizes interior and exterior video surveillance cameras throughout the campuses. Local first responders have access to this video feed to assist in the event of an emergency.

Members of Lake Park's pupil personnel services team - including counselors, deans, nurses, social workers and psychologists - are readily available for students as they struggle to understand their emotions. Our trained professionals are equipped to counsel students and can be a valuable resource for families who also play an essential role in helping students cope. Please refer to this useful infographic from the National Association of School Psychologists with tips to talk to children about violence.

Thank you for partnering with Lake Park to promote a culture where everyone has a shared responsibility to be vigilant and focused on safety. Information can be communicated privately 24/7 via the district's Anonymous Tip Hotline at (630) 529-3001. We are anxious to review lessons learned from this latest school tragedy, so that we may continue to be proactive.

The Apartheid era of South Africa history is a dark moment in human history. The ending of this era could have been much bloodier had it not been for the leadership of Nelson Mandela, who chose to focus on coming together rather than seeking revenge or retribution. His vision for this unification included the sport of rugby and the South African national team, the Springbok.

Students will have the opportunity to watch "Invictus" and analyze how Nelson Mandela leveraged the popularity of rugby in South Africa and how the team and the country responded.

Save the date for the final screening of the year: "Blood Diamond" will be shown on Tuesday, April 24!
