1st Sunday in Lent
Scripture Lessons: Mark 1: 12-15
Sermon: Moving from Secondhand to Firsthand Religious Experience-Part 2
Scott Kenefake will preach at 8:30 and 9:45 in Lingle Chapel and 11 in the sanctuary.
This week, Dr. Kenefake will share "Part 2" of
"Moving from Secondhand to Firsthand Religious Experience." Part 1 focused on the demise of the vertical, "three-tiered universe" metaphor in the 20
th century that consciously or unconsciously underpinned our view of the church as "mediator" between the world and a distant, super-natural, theistic God for so many centuries (Forest!). Part 2 will focus on the 21
st century theological shift to a more "horizontal" or flat understanding of God's relationship to us as
with us, near, intimate, and close-God in the world-and the sacredness/goodness of God's creation--and the implications of that for church and society going forward (Trees!).
The Geneva Choir will sing Keep Me Faithfully at the 8:30 service.
The Chancel Choir will sing O Pray for the Pace of Jerusalem at the 11:00 service.
The congregation will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism

The Theologian in Residence Lecture
by Rev. Dr. Samuel L. Adams (Davidson '93) will be given on Thurs., February 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sprinkle Room in the College Union. The lecture is entitled "The Bible's Complex Vision for Justice and Our Current Political Moment" and is made possible by the grant received for campus ministry.

PRAYER AT THE CLOSE OF DAY
, a contemplative service with music in the style of Taize and Compline, will be offered on February 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Davidson United Methodist chapel. Musicians from both churches will provide leadership.

Professor of Sociology Matt Samson will present a four-week class on "Creation, Cosmology, and Climate Justice: A view from the Global South." This unit places the idea of "integral ecology" from Pope Francis's encyclical
Laudata Si': On Care for Our Common Home
in conversation with recent Reformed ideas on the doctrine of creation. Climate justice is then considered from the perspective of activist movements in the Global South (primarily Latin America) that challenge the unjust distribution of the costs of extractive economic activities such as mining and plantation agriculture. Case studies from the Presbyterian Hunger Program of the PCUSA in Peru and Bolivia will be used to facilitate our discussion.
