On Tuesday of this week, Commander Paul Bauer, was gunned down in a stairwell outside of the Thompson Center while assisting other officers during an arrest.
This is part of his story serving as a Chicago Police officer.

Commander Paul R. Bauer faithfully served the Chicago Police Department for more than 31 years until his tragic on-duty death on February 13, 2018.

His most recent assignment was Commander of the 18th (Near North) District which covers a large portion of downtown Chicago in the Near North neighborhood as well as portions of Lincoln Park. Commander Bauer joined CPD in July 1986, and through 1994, served in the 3rd (Grand Crossing) and 1st (Central) Districts as well as the Department's elite Mounted Unit. In 1994 he was promoted to Sergeant where he was assigned to the 22nd (Morgan Park) until 1998. From 1998 through 2005 he served on specialized enforcement teams and ultimately returned to the Mounted Unit.

In 2005, he was promoted to Lieutenant where he served in the 12th (Near West) District until 2008 when he once again returned to the Mounted Unit as its Commanding Officer. In 2015, he was promoted to Captain, where he served as Executive Officer of the 18th District. He was ultimately promoted to Commander of the 18th District in July 2016.

Throughout his various assignments he professionally oversaw public safety plans at large scale events and for dignitary protection. Commander Bauer also made community outreach a priority, attending countless public meetings and hosting a monthly Coffee with the Commander meeting in his district. He earned 67 various awards and honorable mentions, including two for crime reduction, throughout his career as a testament to his dedicated service. He graduated from Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, then earned a Bachelor of Science from Northern Illinois University and also earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Commander Bauer leaves behind his wife, Erin, and his 13 year old daughter, Grace.

The wake will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 653 W. 37th St. It will be open to the public, and Bauer will be honored at 6 p.m. by the St. Jude Police League of Chicago at the church.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 at Nativity of Our Lord Church. The service will only be for family, friends and law enforcement and other officials. Interment for Bauer will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 W. 111th St., in Alsip.

Commander Paul R. Bauer

Feb 13th- Joint Statement from Aldermen Hopkins, Smith, Reilly & Waguespack on the Shooting of
18th District Police Commander Paul R. Bauer

We are heartbroken to learn about the tragic death of 18th District Police Commander Paul Bauer this afternoon at the Thompson Center while assisting a tactical unit. A career police officer loved by the rank-and-file in the District and throughout the City, his open-door, no-nonsense approach to policing helped shift the culture of policing in his district.

A long serving veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Commander Bauer came to the 18th District in 2016, and quickly made his presence and leadership known. He was a brave police officer, and his actions today in assisting officers chasing a suspect shows his passion and commitment to the job, and in keeping the safety and security of our city.

Commander Bauer's intuition and understanding of the complexities of policing, combined with his open and honest approach in reporting on the issues faced in the District helped better combat the challenges faced on the streets. We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have known Commander Bauer, and to have had him leading efforts to keep the District safe.

This afternoon we stood vigil, along with hundreds of first responders, at Northwestern Medical Center to mourn his loss.

In closing, today's events serve as a painful reminder of the challenges faced by his brothers and sisters in the Chicago Police Department.
We ask that you keep Commander Bauer, his family, friends and the entire Chicago Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Attention All Special Ed Families/Atención a Todas Las Familias de Educación Especial
The IL State Board of Education (ISBE) is investigating CPS via a Public Inquiry on suspicion that CPS' new Special Education policies and practices are designed to save money by withholding services from children with special needs. As part of its investigation, ISBE will conduct public hearings where parents and guardians can testify or submit written testimony about their experiences with Special Education in CPS.

Many families have been experiencing a range of issues over the past year with CPS special education policies and practices, including but not limited to:
  • Withdrawal of paraprofessional support or refusal to provide a paraprofessional
  • Withdrawal of transportation or refusal to provide bus service
  • Delay of student evaluations for months
  • Failure to provide the services indicated on the IEP
  • IEP meetings held without parent or guardian presence
  • Parent or guardian run-around
If you have experienced any of these issues or other problems with special ed at CPS, please fill out this form provided by Raise Your Hand for Illinois, provide your contact info, and they'll follow up with you about providing written or oral testimony for these hearings. You can also email them at: [email protected] or call them at: 312-561-5481.
