Screening This Sunday
 
"The rare movie that might be called a spiritual documentary," is how Variety Magazine describes the film titled, I Am Not Your Negro. As part of the Race and Religion series, this film will be shown on Sunday, February 11, at 12:45 p.m. in the Chapel. The film has also been described as a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement (using James Baldwin's words) to the present of BlackLivesMatter; a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for. We hope you'll join us for this important viewing.

Lent at First Church
 
Wednesday, February 14, marks the beginning of the Lenten season. We hope you'll join us for Ash Wednesday worship at 7 p.m. that evening and again on Sundays throughout Lent as we seek the sacred.  

New Adult Ed Class 
 
Biblical Economics: Contrasting Visions for our Future  will begin next Sunday, February 18, and run through March 18. 10:15 a.m. The class will focus on self-examination and reflect on what it means to be a Christian living in a consumer driven, market based economy. UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank will kick off the series next week offering a talk titled, "Is the Market Moral" followed by time for questions and answers. We hope to see you there!

Saturday, February 24
 
Join us for a one-day workshop on Saturday, February 24, that will include interactive lectures, a panel of Madison educators, and small group discussions around the achievement gap in Madison. The event will be led by Rev. Dr. Reginald Blount, assistant professor of formation, youth, and culture, and Rev. Dr. Virginia A. Lee, associate professor of Christian education and director of deacon studies.  We will also be welcoming Dr. Blount to Sunday services as our guest preacher for that weekend.  Read more about Garrett on the Road here.

Fruit, Cheese, and Sausage Sale This Week
Profits benefit  missional programs of FUMC. Double the benefits by buying fruit and donating to the food pantry. Thanks!  

Youth Missions
This year we will not be having a Mardi Gras meal as a youth missions fundraiser. In its place, we will have a Pancake Sunday, later this spring, so stay tuned! In the meantime, you can support Youth Missions by putting in a fruit order or two, at the table in the Narthex this Sunday.  

Young Adult Discussion Group
Young adults meet at Barriques on W. Washington to discuss faith, current events, and what we can do. This week we'll discuss Lent and visioning for the next several weeks. 7 p.m.

Spouses Now Alone Luncheon
The next SNA lunch is scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, at noon at Imperial Garden, University Ave. & Allen Blvd. Plan to join us for fellowship, conversation and good food. Please contact Jim Ostrander at 608-338-0268 by Friday, February 23, if you can attend.

World Day of Prayer 
On March 2, Church Women United will gather at First Baptist Church, 518 North Franklin Avenue, to celebrate World Day of Prayer. Join us for gathering and coffee at 9 a.m. with worship to follow at 10. 

Laity Convocation
All laity in Wisconsin are invited to the Laity Convocation with Bishop Jung from March 23 & 24 at Reedsburg UMC. The theme this year reflects our 2018 Annual Conference theme: One With Each Other. Friday night will start with a banquet, followed by a panel on the Hispanic Pentecost Emergence Initiative in Wisconsin. Wesleyan Heritage in England: Travel and Learn Together
Rev. Mark will be the primary teacher on a pilgrimage to England this summer, July 13-20. Pick up an itinerary and registration form at the Information Desk or contact Rev. Tina for more information. Number of participants is limited so if you're interested, don't delay.
