Rick Protas Memorial Award
This year Brotherhood is recognizing, for the first time, a Brotherhood Member that recently became involved in a significant and impactful manner with the
Rick Protas Memorial Award, Rick, of blessed memory, joined Brotherhood and within a year he was running programs, working in the kitchen and offering valuable counsel. Anytime we needed a volunteer, Rick stepped up. He joined the Executive Team and rose to Vice President before succumbing to cancer, but his memory and impact are alive within the Brotherhood today. In memory of Rick, Ken Glaser recommended the award, and Brotherhood proudly bestowed, as its first recipient, Aaron Greenberg.
Aaron has been an active board member, and served as the person in charge of D'Var Torahs for each meeting. He has volunteered at many activities and can be seen attending most Brotherhood events. He also has a spouse that is pretty active in Temple, often in a melodic manner. Congratulations to Aaron Greenberg (and his wife Cantor Devorah Avery).

Brotherhood/Chai Bingo
The Brotherhood provides a wide number of choices when it comes to events, but nothing we do is more heartwarming than Bingo with CHAI residents.
The next CHAI Bingo event is Sunday July 30. We need prizes to able to hand out to the winners. Are you able to donate something that will be meaningful to a CHAI resident? Contact Bill Hoffpauer.

MAZEL MAZEL Mazel tov to Jason Sandler, Brotherhood Man of the Year. There was a time when if you did one thing well you might get named man of the year. Today we have many people doing so many things well, that it is tougher to select a Man of the Year. Jason was the perfect choice - whether it is BARFS, the kitchen, ushering, or being on the Executive Committee, Jason doesn't say no, and he finds a way to do it all well. Mazel tov to Jason (and Monica, as they are often a team effort). Together, they are like Bill and Hillary...er...Sonny and Cher...er...Donny and Marie? You get the idea...Chang and Eng. |
Prez Sez
All the men of Temple Shalom will be getting a letter in the mail inviting you to become a member of the Brotherhood. A new year is starting and it's your membership and involvement that helps the Brotherhood support Temple Shalom and our community activities.
As president of the Brotherhood, I invite you to become a member of the Brotherhood but not just one who pays dues. The Brotherhood is involved in so many different aspects of Temple life. Our mission statement is about youth involvement and I'm very proud that we do so much in this area. We also do a lot with adult education, mitzvah projects and much more.
Look through the material you get from us along with checking out our newly designed webpage to get a feel for what Brotherhood does and how involved we are in Jewish life. We look forward to everyone becoming a member and then becoming involved. I look forward to seeing you around the Temple and/or at the next Brotherhood event!

From the Borscht Belt
A Orthodox Jew who has finally made it in business treats himself to a new Lamborghini! After buying it, he feels guilty, so he goes to the Orthodox Rabbi and asks for a mezuzah for the Lamborghini.
"You want a mezuzah for what?" the Rabbi asks.
"It's a Lamborghini," says the man.
"What's a Lamborghini?" asks the Rabbi.
"A sports car."
"What? That's blasphemy!" the Rabbi shouts. You want a mezuzah for a sports car? Go to the Conservatives!"
Well, the man is disappointed, but goes to the Conservative Rabbi and asks for a mezuzah.
"You want a mezuzah for what?" the Rabbi asks.
"For my Lamborghini", the man replies.
"What's a Lamborghini?" asks the Rabbi.
"A car, a sports car." "What? That is blasphemy!" the Rabbi shouts. You want a mezuzah for a Goyishe car? Go to the Reform!"
Again, the man feels guilty and disappointed, but goes to the Reform Rabbi.
"Rabbi," he asks, "I'd like a mezuzah for my Lamborghini."
"You have a Lamborghini?" asks the Rabbi.
"You know what it is?" says the man.
"Of course!" says the Rabbi. "It's a fantastic Italian sports car. What's a mezuzah?"

She is a Member of AIPAC (and therefore friends with Ken Glaser) and has traveled to Washington DC to lobby on Capitol Hill. She has top albums, starred in films, and on tv you may have seen her in - BIG LOVE, NCIS, LEVERAGE, CSI:MIAMI, CSI:NY, NIP/TUCK, LAS VEGAS and STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE. Oh, and she also served in the Israeli military, so don't mess with her.

Thanks to All Who Helped this past month.
Thanks to Perry Zidow, Mark Fisher, Bill Hoffpauer, Rick Cohen, and all the volunteers that had parts during the Installation! Thank you also to Cantor Devorah Avery and Rabbi Andrew Paley for their assistance in Installation.
If we missed your name, it was not due to a lack of gratitude, it is due to our ineptitude, for which we enjoy abundance. We thank the unthanked, the underthanked, and thankless.

Scholars
Congrats to Bob Weinfeld Scholarship winners Dylan Kort and Ari Spraggins, and to Mel Sacks Memorial Scholarship winners Nathan Pearson, Lindsay Thomas, and Nathan Mandell.
Brotherhood's commitment to our temple youth continues and is a firm as ever.
These scholarships are only a small portion of the different ways Brotherhood puts its money where its mouth is. We also do it by providing a pretty nice spread at events, because if you are going to put your money where your mouth is, then it should taste good.
