President's Message

VMX 2018 Went Swimmingly!

We just returned from Orlando after attending the VMX conference. We had a full-day lecture track as well as a booth in the exhibit hall. The AARV track was very successful, and several of our lectures were standing room only! Thank you to our speakers - Drs. Cara Blake, Carolina Medina, Nina Kieves and Kristin Kirkby Shaw. Thanks as well to our grant winners. Two $2,500 AARV-sponsored grants were awarded in 2016, and their research was presented this year at VMX - Dr. Amber Ihrke presented her research entitled The Prevalence of Spondylosis Deformans in Tail-Less Rottweilers and its Association with Cranial Cruciate Ligament Insufficiency and Dr. Daniel McCarthy's study The Effects of Shockwave Therapy on Short-Term Pain Control and Return to Function in Postoperative Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture was presented by Dr. Carolina Medina. We also want to send a shout-out to Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw who was awarded the 2018 Royal Canin-sponsored $2,500 John J. Sherman award for excellence in veterinary rehabilitation. Please congratulate her on her invaluable contributions to our profession. Dr. Cara Blake also received a plaque in appreciation of her hard work as 2017's AARV president. And last, but not least, a million thanks to our sponsors for providing five amazing raffle prizes that were given out during our annual membership meeting - DogLeggs, GingerLead, HelpEmUp, and Thera-Paw donated a total of $1,000 worth of loot!

We reviewed our 2017 accomplishments and discussed our 2018 goals at the annual AARV membership meeting at VMX. We will continue to provide members with research grant opportunities: the Canine Rehabilitation Institute sponsored a $5,000 grant whose winner will be announced within the next couple of weeks and we also plan on having two additional $2,500 upcoming research grants this year. We will continue to foster relationships with our sponsors and recommend that you keep your eyes peeled for social media contests that highlight them. We will also continue to work closely with the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians (APRVT) as they accept applications for their new specialty (VTS) in physical rehabilitation. We will strive to work more closely with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR), and we also hope to develop a relationship with the Animal Rehab Special Interest Group (ARSIG) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). We also discussed our next endeavor which highlights our ongoing goal of providing continuing education in our field: we will have a lecture track at the IAVRPT International Rehab Summit in Knoxville, Tennessee this summer, and we encourage you to attend.

Lots to come in 2018 so read the AARV newsletters, follow us on social media, keep an eye out for research grant opportunities, and join us at upcoming conferences. As always, please reach out to me personally with any suggestions or questions. Thank you for your membership. Your participation in the AARV is helping to drive the field of rehabilitation forward.

Regards,

ACVSMR logo
Hi, everyone! So great to meet so many of you at VMX this past week. We had a great turnout of AARV members. One of the topics at the annual meeting was how to support our members who are ACVSMR residents (I am a resident myself), and since I'm in charge of membership I thought I'd reach out. I know some of you, but if you are an ACVSMR resident, please email me at [email protected] and let me you're out there. The AARV would like to address the needs of our ACVSMR resident members with networking, study partners and anything else that would help to support your journey. Thank you!

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?

Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?

Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) has created a new online course to demystify clinical research for practicing rehabilitation therapists, interns and residents.  Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research  is taught by CRI faculty member  Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR who has spent more than 30 years doing research.

The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.

AARV members receive a 10% tuition discount. If you have questions or are interested in registering for the next session, email CRI at [email protected].
