We demand  action for gun safety in Tallahassee  and in Washington

A powerful moment: Is it a turning point?

Those who attended the Broward League of Women Voters' rally for a ban on assault weapons in Fort Lauderdale Saturday joined thousands in witnessing a historic moment.

Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School students who saw their friends and teachers gunned down became political activists, and our rally amplified their voices.

We were awed by their eloquence and power, and we vow to work with them to bring about change.

Here is a roundup of ways you can help.

Demand that bills banning assault weapons are heard during the current session of the Florida Legislature

The Florida Legislature is currently in session and there are bills pending to ban assault weapons that are stuck in committee.

Demand that the Legislature #HearTheBills. Make calls. Send emails. Make our voices louder than the small minority represented by the NRA.

Here's what you can do:

1. Call Joe Negron (R-Stuart), the Senate president at (850 )487-5025. Tell the staff member who answers that you want SB 196: "Gun Safety" to get a fair hearing in the Senate. This bill bans assault weapons and high-capacity magazines like those used in the Parkland tragedy. Email him:  [email protected]

2. SB 196 is stuck in the Senate Judiciary Committee. It is chaired by  Senator Steube (R-Sarasota),(850) 487-5023 . Call him and demand a vote on SB 196. Email him:

3. Call Richard Corcoran (R-Sarasota), the Speaker of the House, at (850) 717-5000. Tell his staff that you want HB 219: "Assault Weapons and Large-Capacity Magazines" (the companion to SB 196) to be brought to the floor for a vote. Email him:  [email protected]

4. HB 219 is assigned to Criminal Justice Subcommittee, which is chaired by Ross Spano (R-Dover). Call Spano's office (850) 717-5059 and demand a vote on HB 219.
Email:  [email protected].

A vote on these bills -- up or down -- will helps us hold our representatives accountable.
