Dear District 115 Families,
I, along with more than 400 Illinois school district superintendents, support a grassroots statewide initiative called, "Pass Illinois' Budget!"
While Illinois public schools have benefited from a partially-funded state budget, our schools, students, families, and communities will continue to suffer without a full state budget. We also will continue to struggle if mandated categoricals (state payments that support special education, bilingual education, transportation, and other important services) do not get paid this year. To date, the State of Illinois owes our district $4,038,884 in those mandated categoricals, and there is no state budget on the table for approval. We are calling on members of the Illinois General Assembly and the Governor to do the following:
- Immediately, and with bipartisan support, end the state budget impasse.
- Improve the state's education funding formula and invest in students and schools, including higher education institutions, throughout the state.
- Pay school districts what they are owed this year.
Let's all work together to #PassILBudget and create adequate and equitable funding for our schools.
Dr. Timothy M. Shimp
Superintendent of Schools

In Illinois, public education is the state's constitutional responsibility. The state delegates to local school boards the authority to govern school districts within the parameters set by state law. Boards of Education consist of seven school district residents elected to serve four-year terms without pay.

District Vision Update Recap
District 115 has put forth great effort this past year to be both transparent and engaging towards community stakeholders. As part of that effort, an emphasis has been placed on ensuring community stakeholders are communicated with as to the current state and future expectations of the school district.
To this end, District administrators and community volunteers implemented the district's first Vision Update, which included a State of the District address and Community Information Fair.
More than 350 community members attended the April 8 event either in person or online. Community members who have not yet viewed the State of the District address are encouraged to do so by visiting the District 115 website at:

District 115 teachers create a concert to connect subject areas
Bristol Grade School & Yorkville Grade School's music teacher, Nika Morton, and library media specialist, Stephanie McHugh, contacted author/illustrator Peter Reynolds and asked for permission to use his stories and artwork to create a kindergarten and first-grade student concert that connected music, books, and art.
Activities leading up to the concert were incorporated into music, art, library, physical education, and information literacy and technology classes to provide lessons for the students based on Reynolds' stories. Activities included reading several of Reynolds' books and other activities that allowed students to connect with each other, learn how to make their mark on the world, and be the happiest dreamers they could be. In addition, students "traveled the world" for a week, taking their paper passports with them to all their classes, and shared the story "Happy Dreamer" at their concert along with several songs including, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," and "The Dot Song."

YEF celebrates its kick-off and community engagement efforts

The
Yorkville Educational Foundation (YEF), in partnership with sponsor Waubonsee Community College, hosted its inaugural event on April 30 at Yorkville Middle School. The Ignite Your Summer event featured a keynote presentation by YouTube sensation and Chicago teacher, Dwayne Reed, and a vendor fair that offered information on a variety of local summer activities for children.
Reed's presentation focused on arming parents with information on battling brain drain and keeping children's minds engaged over the summer months. YEF will award a donation to the school with the most representation at the event and a lucky event participant will win a Raging Waves family gift pack. The YEF Board of Directors would like to thank all the vendors and CUSD 115 staff for their support of this great event!
