Caring for Families Who Love Their Pets
What Would You Do If You Saw a Dog in a Hot Car?

As a dog lover and owner you have experienced it...your dog's tail wagging and those big round eyes staring at you as you pick up the car keys. You can see the anticipation on your pet's face saying, "PLEASE take me with you!" As tempting as this may be, think twice and you just might save your dog's life.

It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle on a warm day to succumb to heatstroke.  Even when the outside air temperatures are in the 60's, leaving him/her alone in the car could still be fatal.  This situation also encourages other dangerous situations including your pet biting passerbys through a cracked window or providing the perfect opportunity for someone to steal your pet.

Animals are not able to sweat like humans do. Dogs cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paws. If they have only overheated air to breathe, animals can collapse, suffer brain damage and possibly die of heatstroke. Just 15 minutes can be enough for an animal's body temperature to climb from a normal 102.5 to deadly levels.

So the next time you have errands to run on a hot day (or any day) and are considering taking your furry friend with you, please make the decision that will keep your pet safe and leave them at home.

If you find a pet trapped in a hot car, here is what you can do to help:
  • Immediately call animal control or 911. Local law officials have the ability to enter the vehicle and rescue the pet.
  • Do not leave until help has arrived.
  • Notify the managers of nearby businesses so they can make an urgent announcement.
  • Write down the car information including license plate and make/model of vehicle

    FIREWORKS....

NOT FUN FOR FIDO

Like many Americans, you may be planning to have a festive Fourth of July. Along with pool parties and barbeques, no July holiday celebration would be complete without enjoying the fireworks that celebrate the birth of our nation.

However, unlike people, pets don't associate the noise, flashes, and burning smell of pyrotechnics with celebrations and  often panic at the loud whizzes and bangs they produce.  More pet's go missing this time of year than any other as they frantically run in fear to escape the commotion and chaos that these festivities bring.  Here are some helpful tips to keep your pet happy, healthy, and safe this 4th of July.

1.  Going to a parade or fireworks display?  Keep

     your pet at home

2.  NEVER use fireworks around your pet

3.  Don't put insect repellant on your pet that
isn't specifically used for a pet

4.  Alcoholic drinks poison pets. Do not let them
     drink anything but water

5.  Have your pet properly identified with a name
     tag and microchip

6.  Keep your pet away from glow jewelry. The
chemicals inside can be harmful to your pet

7.  Keep track of your pet's whereabouts with
doors opening and closing with the movement
     of visitors.

8.   Don't give your pet "table food"

9.  Lighter fluid and matches are harmful to
your pet so keep it away from him/her

10.Citronella insect control products can harm
      your pet
.
Enjoy the summer fun upon us and the festivities that it brings, and remember...create an atmosphere that everyone will enjoy, including Fido:)
