RealStreet Recruiting Coordinator Promoted to Recruiter!
We were thrilled to announce the promotion of Lina Guzman to Recruiter last month! Lina joined RealStreet at the end of 2016 as a Recruiting Coordinator for the Tysons Corner branch. During her time with the company she saw success in her position, quickly gaining additional responsibilities and growing into the role of full Recruiter. As such, she has developed into an integral part of the RealStreet recruiting team.

According to RealStreet's Tysons Corner Branch Manager, Maribeth Corduck, "Lina is an amazing employee to work with on a daily basis." Maribeth elaborated, adding that Lina "is diligent and passionate about her work and professional development.  After working with her closely over the last 6 months, I can say that she goes above and beyond to make sure she understands the tasks and they are done fully and thoroughly. Interesting Industry Information
How is the Overall Workforce?
The U.S. Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a "M onthly Jobs Report"  soon after the beginning of each month. Each report describes the previous month's employment situation, based on data such as the number of jobs that were added to the economy and the unemployment rate. The US economy added 211,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate dropped slightly to 4.4% (the lowest level since May 2007). For more information, check out the  BLS' interactive graphs.

While there are differing opinions regarding the April Job Report numbers, many view this past months' numbers as a rebound and a sign of good things to come.  As stated in a recent  CNN post , Wilmington Trust's Chief Economist, Luke Tilley, believes that our country has a "solid labor market right now" and that the report is a solid indication of ongoing improvement.

As stated in a recent Construction Dive article , total construction employment reached 6.877 million (a 2.6% increase YoY) after an increase of 5,000 net new jobs in April. According to the Associated Builders and Contractors' (ABC) Chief Economist, Anirban Basu, April's "employment report confirms that the U.S. economic expansion remains firmly in place" and that construction "hiring will remain moderate for the foreseeable future" but it should accelerate significantly as the government implements the anticipated pro-business plans.
The Growing Threat of Ransomware
Countries across the globe were impacted by the Ransomware strain WannaCry (also known as WanaCrypt0r and WCry) last month. According to a recent Wired article, the malware leveraged a "Windows vulnerability known as EternalBlue that allegedly originated with the NSA" and that even though "Microsoft released a patch  for the exploit, known as MS17-010, in March" many organizations had not installed the update.

The malware infected systems, locking users out of their data via encryption. A decryption key is released once a ransom had been paid. The impact was wide-spread, and as stated by Adam Kujawa, the Director of Malware Intelligence at Malwarebytes, "the spread is immense. I've never seen anything before like this. This is nuts."

Ransomware Risks in Your Workplace

According to a joint survey by the cybersecurity firm Carbonite and The Ponemon Institute, referenced by Wired
  • >50% of corporate ransomware attacks start with an employee using an enterprise device for personal tasks.
  • 40% of corporate victims in the same survey said that ransomware spread across devices in their networks.
Within the AEC industry, the threat of cyberattacks is growing. According to the State of Disaster Recovery 2016 survey, featured in a recent  Construction Executive article, "67 percent of respondents estimate that their businesses would lose $20,000 for every day of downtime". How would your company fair after a Ransomware attack or a massive loss of critical information?

How to Minimize Risk of Ransomware Attacks

According to an additional Wired article, there are four simple ways individuals and organizations can protect themselves:
  1. Back UpKeep separate up to date copies of everything on your system to ensure you are not forced to pay to recover ransomed (or simply lost / corrupted) files.
  2. Say No - Simply do not click on suspicious links ad emails.
  3. Patch & Block - Malware adapts on a daily basis. Minimize security gaps by installing updates when available.
  4. Disconnect - If you suspect that you have accidentally installed malware, disconnect the device (and connected networks) to minimize damage.
