JUNE 2017
ART @ THE MACC

Over the 20+ years of Maui Arts & Cultural Center's history, the scope of the Schaefer International Gallery has grown from a dream on the blueprint to a valued component on the local and global arts scene (hence the 'international' in the name). In our visual arts programming, we aspire to support artists in their work and to inspire experiences in the arts.

A look at the exhibits this season alone tells a story of the depth and breadth of exploration in visual arts:  from Hawaiian culture to ancient Japanese craftsmanship, classical and mythological themes, and the creative output of the Hawai'i/Pacific region. A few are recapped below. And coming up soon is our signature event: the Schaefer Portrait Challenge, which brings us in closer context to not only the outstanding artists of our community, but to outstanding people in our community.

But it's not just this season, or this year. The history of visual arts here at the MACC shows a cumulative collection of outstanding visual arts events. Click MauiArts.org/exhibits to see an archive of the past few years' exhibitions and related public events.

Let's not forget what has become a very popular innovative component of the exhibits -- the interactive art-based social mixer known as ArT=Mixx, a free evening where people come to mix, mingle, and celebrate the visual and performance arts in especially innovative & creative new ways. Another  ArT=Mixx is coming up soon, on June 30th .
Meanwhile, our Maui children are living and growing with the arts:  with Can Do! Days; and the summer  Young Art Makers program now in full swing;  and the ongoing free  Observe and Play Family Days planned around select exhibits.(Next one is August 26, during the upcoming  "Spineless" exhibit.

An important thing to keep in mind is that exhibits in the Schaefer International Gallery are FREE!  What an unbelievable opportunity for people on Maui, to enjoy this caliber of art without admission charge!   So lucky we live Maui....especially @ the MACC.

Piero Resta: Illuminatus  |  May 21- July 16, 2017

The opening reception of this retrospective exhibit in brought together people from Italy, California, and Hawai'i in honor of a man and artist that many considered as one of Maui's own great personalities: an artist whose life's work was infused with passion and spiritual transcendence within natural and mythological worlds. The selection of paintings, sculpture, and personal archives on display reveals his Italian heritage with its classical influences, integrated with the vibrant life force of his longtime home in Kaupo, Maui.

PREVIOUS EXHIBITS

Akihiko Izukura: The Way of Natural Textiles   Jan 15 - Mar 19, 2017

Japanese master of dyeing and weaving from Kyoto, Akihiko Izukura works primarily in silk by transforming thread into intricately constructed fabrics. He hand-dyes silk with subtle colors made only from natural materials, following a process that is over 2,000 years old. For his Maui exhibition, Izukura created a large installation made of woven silk in a large ovoid form supported by bamboo; visitors were invited to walk through the tunnel-like structure, creating a calm connection to being "inside nature". The symbiotic relation between man and nature has become the philosophy and focus behind Izukura's work. Along with the installation was a collection of his modern couture designs, made with techniques in weaving, netting, braiding, and entwining silk.

 Hawai'i National Parks Centennial Juried Exhibition  Aug 30 - Nov 6, 2016
