CMP Awards 158 Scholarships to Student Athletes for 2017-2018 School Year

CAMP PERRY, OH - The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has awarded $158,000 towards outstanding junior marksmen through its CMP Scholarship Program to be used for the 2017-2018 term - over $5,000 more than the previous year. A total of 289 applications were received, with 158 awarded to both junior males and females.

The 2017 National Matches are fast approaching! That means thousands of adults and juniors will soon be loading up their equipment and heading for the shores of Lake Erie to fire on some of the most prestigious range sites in the world, located on the grounds of Camp Perry, Ohio. Many new young athletes will be attending for the first time, while others will be traveling with teams that have made their marks on the National Match stage for the past several years. One team that has given itself a "regular" status, but is anything but standard is the Arizona Scorpions Junior High Power Team. Over the years, the team has secured numerous wins and honors through its talented and hard-working juniors within the program.

Competing at each Travel Games event are members of Team CMP - composed of accomplished rifle marksmen, hand-picked by the CMP to serve as ambassadors to the sport.  Team CMP was assembled in May 2016 by CMP's Talladega Marksmanship Park range master Sara Rozanski in an attempt to build a group of elite civilian competitors. Along with a knack for competitive shooting, Team CMP members are carefully selected from individuals who want to inspire and guide other civilians on and off the firing line.  Recently, members of the team sat down and answered questions about themselves to give us a better look into their journeys as riflemen. Read about Team CMP member Johnny Fisher.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports . The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

California 4-H Shooting Sports  Program Update for CMP Prepared by: John Borba, State Shooting Sports Coordinator -  4-H Shooting Sports has a strong presence in the California 4-H Youth Development Program. As a project, it has one of the highest levels of youth enrollment that does not pertain to livestock. Over the past few years, the 4-H shooting sports program in California has stepped onto the national stage by hosting national level trainings and workshops. It was the same for 2016. This year California hosted a national shooting sports workshop to introduce the 4-H Western Heritage shooting sports discipline to the members of the Golden State. The project originated in Montana and has since become popular in a number of other western states. The purpose of the project is to instill an appreciation for the history of the nation while tying in some period firearms education and shooting.

The 2016 4-H Western Heritage Workshop was held in Winton, CA which is located in Merced County. The Merced County 4-H shooting sports volunteers were so excited about hosting the event in their county that they constructed props to represent an entire street in an old west town. There was plenty of hands-on, learn-by-doing training for the adults and teen leaders who were present. Upon successful completion of this course the participants returned to their state, or in the case of the California participants to their home county, to implement a 4-H Western Heritage Project with the youth in their communities.

We appreciate the continued support of the Civilian Marksmanship Program in our efforts to provide training and activities for the California 4-H shooting sports members and leaders.

Making Its Mark On Marksmanship - Story by Frank Jardim, Photos by Tim Heady - American Shooting Journal - T he acronym CMP stands for Civilian Marksmanship Program, and if it sounds familiar, that's because it's been around for 114 years. Once a government-funded program administered by the U.S. Army, it was reformed as a private, self-supporting, nonprofit in 1996. Its core mission is instructing the citizenry, and particularly the nation's youth, in the principles of safe firearms handing and cultivating the knowledge and skills required for precision shooting.
