Dear Ladies,
The month of May was a busy and productive month for our Club. We completed two successful fundraisers, our Annual Art Show and Sunday Bingo; we awarded our Community Services grants and Scholarship awards; held our Food Drive and Annual Canal Park Luncheon, and took part in the Memorial Day ceremonies.
- Thanks to Jo Luscombe, Chair, and Miggs Burroughs, Curator, and our entire Art Show Committee. Thanks especially to our sponsors and donors... and artists. What a beautiful way to raise much needed funds for Scholarships.
- Thanks to Wendy McKeon and Kim Reichert, under whose direction we managed to replenish our Food Closet with the Postal Carriers Food Drive.
- Thanks to Wendy McKeon and her Sunday Bingo Committee for a flawless and fun event.
- Thanks to Patria Swann who once again expertly organized our Members for the Annual Canal Park Luncheon, so appreciated by the residents there.
- And, thanks to Jeannette Tewey for organizing our participation in the Memorial Day Parade and to Dorothy Curran for providing us with a float!
Also during the Month of May, we were afforded the pleasure of meeting with some of the organizations and individuals to whom our efforts are directed:
- Thanks to Community Services and Sarah Menchaca, Chair, for a very successful Awards Breakfast.
- Thanks to the Scholarship Committee and Arlene Thrope, Chair, for their selection of excellent Scholarship recipients and for a very enjoyable Scholarship Breakfast event.
The Westport Woman's Club Ruegg Grant Committee, Chaired by Sarah Menchaca, has selected the Westport Astronomical Society as the recipient of our 2017 Ruegg Grant. This $5,000 grant is being used for the purchase of a Solar Telescope which is planned be used for the next solar eclipse (on August 21) at the Rolnick Observatory on Bayberry Lane.

Thanks again to our Nominating Committee: Jo Luscombe, Chair, Jo Calcagni, Dorothy Curran, Susan Fox and Susan Hricik who assembled our 2017-2018 Board due to be installed at June Club Day. Come and celebrate.

After your shift, stay and try out our food vendors. Ladies, this is our best opportunity to raise the funds needed for our Grants, Scholarships and to help those in need. It is not only rewarding, working together at the Fair is fun. So, come help, invite friends and family...come and enjoy!

CLUB DAY
Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped at our very enjoyable May Tea. The Art Show Committee did the set-up and worked with Mah Jongg as our Hostesses.
Special thanks to Janette Duchnicki and her committee for the beautiful flowers.
Join us Monday, June 5, for Club Day, hosted by Cultural Affairs and Ladies who Lunch, both chaired by Bobbie Herman. Plan to arrive by 11:30 am to enjoy Cobb Salad with grilled chicken breast, avocado, corn, hard boiled egg, red onion, bacon, olives and gorgonzola cheese with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, rolls and, for dessert, chocolate ganache cupcakes.
Please be sure to make your reservation by 1:00 pm, Wednesday, May 31. The cost for lunch is $20.00. If you have a serious food allergy or are a vegetarian, please let me know. If you need to cancel a reservation, please do so also by 1:00 pm on Wednesday, May 31, to avoid being charged.

udents. Their Music Teacher, Carrie Mascaro, has informed me that that they are working with a string group in preparation for our event.
The group consists of

COMMUNITY SERVICES
The annual luncheon from Community Services for the residents of the Canal Park housing complex was held on May 17th. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. The response to this year's call for food donations was amazing and over the top!
The room which had been redecorated for the tenants was further adorned by us with blue metal multi-colored butterflies, and a floral arrangement on the mantle. We also had color-coordinated balloons as well as the upscale coordinated tablecloths, napkins and settings for the luncheon. We had 22 residents who came and sat down for lunch. We packed at least 3 meals for shut-ins. The total of 25 was the largest crowd ever. It was wonderful!!
We had our fun raffle as usual, with beautiful Geraniums, Begonias and New Guinea Impatiens.
The lovely gift bags from L'Occitane were, once again, a huge success. They even had an extra chocolate treat from Carol Goetz. The social gathering of residents seemed especially friendly this year.

With Summer only a few weeks away, the Curio Cottage has a great selection of warm weather items from straw purses to picnic baskets to planters for your flowers. Come take a look!
Also, there are openings for the 3rd Wednesday. 12:30-3:00 pm. You only need to work once a month for 2-1/2 hours. Why not give it a try.

FOOD CLOSET
In spite of the horrendous downpours on Saturday, May 13, the Postal Workers' Food Drive was a tremendous success! We want to thank all the many members who turned out and volunteered between 1:00-6:00 pm emptying the (sopping wet) bags, categorizing the cans and packages, and dating the items. All this work was done with happy spirits and great camaraderie. We had over 100 volunteer hours in total!
We couldn't have managed all the "heavy lifting" out in the rain without the help of Ross McKeon (Wendy's husband) and of Lina Mak-Chin's husband and two sons; we appreciate their good will and strong backs. We had a rush of deliveries early on in the afternoon, then quite a lull, and finally another huge onslaught around 4:00 pm when the Postal Workers were finishing up their mail routes.
All in all, despite the heavy rain that day, most areas of our Food Closet are now bulging at the seams. However, believe it or not, we are still short on Hamburger Helper, Chicken Helper, and Tuna Helper, boxed mashed potatoes, and coffee. Perhaps you can pick up some of these items when you are out shopping? The Food Closet is always inundated with requests during the summer months when kids are home on vacation (thereby not receiving school lunches), and we want to be fully stocked and ready for business when we get the calls from the Human Service Department at Town Hall.

GOURMET
 The Gourmet Group will not meet in June. Members are requested to support our Yankee Doodle Fair Bake Sale either by contributing baked goods or cash. Members who have volunteered to help at the Drop-Off station or to sell at the Bake Sale will be sent an email reminder. We are very grateful for everyone's help.
Our next meeting will be announced in the September Bulletin. Any WWC members who would like to join Gourmet Group for our next season should contact Lisa or Barbara.

MAH JONGG
Our weekly games, on Wednesdays from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, have resumed - if there is a minimum of 3 or 4 players. Emails are sent out at the beginning of each week to members who are interested in playing. If you want to be included in these weekly emails, please contact me to put your name on that list. All players are welcome, regardless of skill level and experience. You do not need to have your own Mah Jongg set, but if you have one, please bring it. We are now using the new 2017 cards.
Lessons are being given, also on Wednesdays from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, to members who would like to learn to play the game. Please contact me if you are interested in this beginner's class.
Please note, there will be no Mah Jongg on Wednesday, June 14, because of Yankee Doodle Fair set-up taking place.

YANKEE DOODLE FAIR
As you know, our
Yankee Doodle Fair 2017 will take place from
June 15-18. The hours on Thursday night and Friday night are 6:00-10:00 pm, on Saturday 1:00-10:00 pm, and on Sunday (Father's Day) 1:00-5:00 pm. Keep your fingers crossed for warm, sunny weather!
We need many, many WWC members to don our blue YDF aprons and volunteer to fill all the shifts in the various areas. Please go online to Sign-Up Genius to choose whichever time slots work with your schedule. If you have difficulty or are tech challenged, please call Kim Reichert for assistance.
We want to extend our thanks to Wynne Abrams, Dorothy Packer, Adriana Cvetkov, and Barbara Stemmer who sold raffle tickets at Stop and Shop on May 6. And we appreciate that on Saturday, June 3, Susan Hricik and Mary Lee Clayton have volunteered to hawk tickets at Stop and Shop. However, we still need two more members (one for 10:00 am-12:00 noon and one for 12:00 noon-2:00 pm) to work at S&S that day.
Yankee Doodle Fair is the club's largest money maker and fund raiser. We need all of you to participate in any way that you are able!
BAKE SALE BOOTH - YANKEE DOODLE FAIR
It's that time of year again for the Gourmet Group's annual solicitation effort for the Yankee Doodle Fair. If you are unable to bake this year, we hope you will consider sending us a cash donation, since these gifts provided a considerable share of our profits last year. Checks should be made out to "Westport Woman's Club" with "Bake Sale" in the memo section and sent in to the office.
We have some fantastic bakers in our Club. However, a contribution does not have to be extraordinary in content or appearance, (although needless to say, we welcome those). People buy our goods because they are homemade! These days, many homemakers do not have the time to bake and look forward to the Fair for the kinds of goods our mothers used to make.
As always, we must conform to Health District regulations. Please be sure to comply with the following:

All donations
must show the name of the donor.
*
All donations
must include the name of the food item and a list of the ingredients.
*
All donations
must be wrapped. It would be very helpful if small items such as brownies, cookies etc could be wrapped individually or in small numbers.
* We cannot accept donations which require refrigeration, so no cheesecakes please.
* No item or frosting should contain uncooked eggs or egg products.
* No cream cheese frostings please.
* Items without nuts are preferred. If your recipe does contain nuts please make sure that this is clearly indicated on the label.
Please do not donate store-bought items. They do not sell. Save yourself a trip to the store and send us the money instead!
Please note that for your convenience there will be a "Drop-off Station" located by the road (Imperial Avenue) in the front of the Clubhouse, as we had last year. This will be available 9.30 - 11.30am, Thursday, June 15th - Saturday, June 17th. Alternatively you may leave baked goods in the kitchen when you volunteer at the Fair but in this case please make sure that your name and a list of ingredients are attached to your contribution.
We are very grateful to all those who contribute their time, their talent, and their assistance to our Bake Sale.
