IMPORTANT REMINDER

Recyclables cannot be bagged!

Residents must understand all recycling has to be loose in the recycling bin.
Recyclables will not be collected if in plastic or paper bags!
Follow these guidelines to make sure you are recycling smart & correctly at the curb.
  • Do NOT put bagged shredded paper (shreds) in your recycling bin!
The rule stating NO plastic bags NOW applies to shreds as well.   Shredded paper can no longer be recycled in the curbside program -- remember shreds can't be bagged, and it can't be loose in the recycle bin.  Shreds are just too small to be recycled with the MRF sorting equipment.  Residents should now place shredded paper in with their trash.   Shreds can only be recycled if residents use one of the drop off below:
*  If taken to RIRRC's Small Vehicle Area.    Click here for details.
*  or brought to a special shredded paper event.

Shred RI located @ 2111 Plainfield Pike, Johnston is offering free shred days on these upcoming Saturdays from 8 am - 12 noon:
                     June 17, 2017:  July 8, 2017:  September 16, 2017:  November 4, 2017

At these events, residents are welcome to bring up to two, 22 gallon bins (standard green recycle curbside bin) worth of sensitive documents free of charge.  (Sensitive documents are only ones that contain identifying, unique numbers that directly trace to a specific person not found through public searches.)
  •  NO Plastic Bags ever in recycling.  Plastic bags are not accepted loose, in bags of plastic bags, or holding recyclables.   This thin material is not a container so is never allowed in the curbside recycling. Remember acceptable plastic for recycling, must be container shaped plastic.  click here for more details
  • Recycling Not In Paper Bags Either.  Recyclables must be loose, so not in paper bags either.  Flattened paper bags belong in the recycling bin, but paper bags holding recycling does not.  The machines cannot empty the bag and properly sort the items in the bag, so please make sure all recycling is loose, not bagged in plastic or paper bags.

The Little Red Schoolhouse

The Little Red Schoolhouse will be open for visitors on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, and again on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm.

This is a great opportunity to take a look inside, talk with a former student who can share what it was like going to a one-room schoolhouse, and learn a little history of our town.  While you are there, view our "Pickets of Memories" fence and see a variety of historical gifts the Association has available.
