Let's Hear It for the Senior Class!

Joseph Armoney and Jeehan Mikdadi are all pumped up for the "Senior Walk."
A throng of supporters turned out this morning to cheer for our 2017 graduates as they took a celebratory and final "Senior Walk" across the length of the Runnels campus.

This new tradition seems to be a great success and was enjoyed by both young and old. It was a great way for seniors to revisit some of the classrooms and hangouts like Fort Wild Thing that hold a special place in their hearts. The seniors also received big hugs and pats on the back from teachers of days gone by.

The event also served as an opportunity for the senior class, represented by officers Anthony Emiliani, Jack Tooraen, Micah Danos and Eva Kruger to present the class gift to K-12 Theatre Program Chair Neena McLain. The gift was a donation in the amount of $2,000 for the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre.

Grand Champion Spellers

The top spellers in the 4th grade's Social Studies States and Capitals Spelling Bee are, from left, Dylan Evans, Leyna Huynh and Jenna Sheikha.
Fourth-graders showcased their spelling acumen in the final round of the Social Studies States and Capitals Spelling Bee held May 17 in the Elementary Drama Room.  Representing their grade sections were finalists Gibson Guay and Sofia Dodd (4A), Dylan Evans and Rowen Basso (4B), and Jenna Sheikha and Leyna Huynh (4C).

One-by-one, contestants were eliminated after stumbling over the spelling of toughies like "Hawaii," "Rhode Island," "Tennessee," "Alabama" and "Salt Lake City," until only one finalist remained:  first-place grand champion, Leyna Huynh. The second-place finisher was Dylan Evans, and the third-place winner was Jenna Sheikha. Congratulations to all of the finalists and many thanks to fourth-grade social studies teacher, Christine Pousson, who organized the event.

Closing the Book on 1,000 Pages of Reading!

AP U.S. History students, from left, Kalyee Freiberger, Alex Morgan, Numair Khan and Madeleine Alessi shuffle strips of paper denoting historical dates, events and figures into organized timelines as a review for their AP Exam.
After completing their AP Exams, students in AP U.S. History and World History AP paused to recognize a milestone in their lives as readers. They celebrated reading their 1,000th page in their course textbooks.

"Both courses are broad surveys," explained their teacher and Jr./Sr. High Social Studies and English Department Head, Norma Marsh. "AP U.S. History covers pre-Columbian to the present, and World History AP covers the Paleolithic Period to the present. This is the first time these students will have read textbooks of this magnitude from cover to cover." Each textbook, she added, is more than 1,000 pages long, with the pages broken into weekly reading assignments.

When the 1,000th page had been turned and AP Exams completed, the students broke out the cake and chips and sat back to enjoy the screening of historical movies.

Student Poems Soon To Appear in Print

Among the 23 Runnels students whose poems will be published in "A Celebration of Poets" are, from left, Riley Mockler, Niki Barakhshan, Ally Sutton, Sarah Stanfield, and Phoenix Knowles.

High Marks for 4th and 5th Grade Solo and Ensemble Festival Participants

Beginning Band trumpet players, from left, Olivia Brunner, Christian Caillouet and Sadie Miller.

Many of our 4th- and 5th-grade band students took part in the Solo and Ensemble Festival May 17 in the performing arts classroom building. Performing as soloists, members of ensembles, or both, students appeared before judges not affiliated with Runnels and were rated on their level of accomplishment. Congratulations to the participants and Beginning and 5th-Grade Band Director Shanna Drescher.

Check Out Original Mural by Painting Class

At work on the new outdoor mural in the kindergarten area with Mrs. McGraw are Hannah Page (left) and Grace Smith (right).
The next time you're turning the corner into the kindergarten classroom corridor from the playground side of the campus, take a look at the new artwork on the wooden fence.  An original mural bursting with bright and cheery images of children flying kites, reading books, and enjoying nature was installed on the previously unembellished fence by art students in Sydney McGraw's beginning and intermediate painting classes.

The students worked with Mrs. McGraw to design, draw and paint the mural. "We wanted to donate something meaningful to the school," explained Mrs. McGraw. Students involved in the project were Robert Law, Kyle Sieberth, Grace Smith, Maddie Sutton, Hannah Page and Zachary Sides.

Birthday Yields New Books for Classroom Library

Arthur Donaldson, grade 5, presents a book donation to sixth-grade reading teacher Rebecca Hillman.
Arthur Donaldson's eleventh birthday turned into a book bonanza for sixth-grade reading teacher, Rebecca Hillman. Instead of presents, Arthur, who is in fifth grade, asked his friends and family to give him money for his birthday so he could buy books for the sixth-grade classroom library, which had been destroyed in last August's flood.

Arthur and his mom, Amy Donaldson, recently made a trip to the Scholastic Warehouse sale to purchase a full box of books for Mrs. Hillman's sixth-grade classroom. Each book will have the inscription, "Donated by the Class of 2024," on its inside cover.

This Is My Country...and Flag

Holding aloft the distinctive flags they designed to represent imaginary nations they created in World Geography are, from left, Madelyn Burney, Cana Brumfield, Minna Ismail, Jack Kahn and Ben Holliday.
This week in Rhonda Tucker's ninth grade World Geography classes, students unfurled their creativity to design flags for imagined countries.

Each student was given free reign to create a flag that they felt truly represented the spirit of an imaginary country of their own devising. Colors and symbols were chosen to reflect key qualities of the nations.

The red, white and yellow of Minna Ismail's flag stood for patriotism, peace, and happiness, respectively. A yellow sun in the background symbolized happiness, and three raised hands (one white, one black, and one tan) in the foreground represented unity and diversity. On the paper she turned in for the assignment, Minna wrote that in her country, which she called "Jamalia," "Diversity is what makes us beautiful."

Students submitted thumbnail sketches of their flag designs and then worked to create more detailed sketches on legal sized paper.

When they had finished, the students were eager to share their flags with friends and classmates.

Kudos and Thank Yous...
