University Honors Scholar Laura Sherman Announced as 2017 Board of Regents Academic Recognition Day Representative

Laura Sherman graduated as an Honors Scholar this spring with an undergraduate degree in Architecture. She was recently chosen as the 2017 Board of Regents Academic Recognition Day Representative due to her impressive list of academic achievements. 

Laura is a member of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Students and was elected president of the Student Honors Council. She has received over twenty scholarships during her tenure at KSU including University Honors Program Scholarships, the James G. Fausett Scholarship, the Lance Linscott Scholarship, and the Jimmy Goldgeier Scholarship. She also won state and national competitions including the AIA 2015 Student Showcase, the AIA 2016 Georgia Merit Award, and the 2016 AIA Georgia People's Choice Award. She received the Honors Student Service Award for holding the most community service hours.  At the national level, she was flown to Philadelphia for winning the AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten competition award for her lung cancer and community center proposal in Atlanta. 

Laura was chosen as a finalist for the  Outstanding Honors Senior award for the Marietta campus and  won first place in the KSU Architecture Thesis Competition this spring.
Dual Enrollment Honors Program Student Asia Hypsher Accepted to MIT

Asia Hypsher, who came to Kennesaw State University as a high school junior, participated in the Dual Enrollment Honors Program (DEHP) for two years, earning 53 college credit hours.  As a DEHP student, Asia participated in the Honors Club where she enjoyed collaborating with other honors students and gained experience in organizing events.  When asked to reflect on her DHEP experience, Asia replied, "I'm thankful for the time I spent as a dual enrollment student as it gave me confidence and allowed me extra time to choose my major."   

Asia was accepted to several prestigious colleges including the Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, and Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. However, after graduating from Marietta High School in Spring 2017, Asia will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  It was after a campus visit that Asia made the decision to attend MIT, stating that she "loved visiting MIT and seeing the opportunities on campus" and "loved Cambridge and the culture."   

At MIT Asia aspires to study Chemical Engineering or Material Science and work in the field of sustainable energy.
Honors Discovery: Bone Records Offered in the Fall

Honors Discoveries are short-term, non-credit learning experiences that revolve around unique topics and offer content beyond the regular curriculum, often integrating current events or pop culture. In these learning experiences, students examine special topics with an Honors instructor and topic expert in a small group setting.

The University Honors Program will offer the first Honors Discovery course in the fall. The course will focus on the Story of Censorship, X-Ray Film, and Bootleg Music in Soviet Russia.

Dr. Patricia Poulter, Dean of the College of the Arts, has expertise on the topic and will be the instructor for the course. The class will be held on  Wednesdays from 12:30-1:50pm on the Marietta campus from August 23rd to October 4th.

Job Opportunity Available for University Honors Students

The Academy for Inclusive Learning and Social Growth is seeking KSU Honors students to serve as peer mentors. 

Student Peer Mentors will facilitate the following: 
  • Assist Audit students with academics and internships 
  • Help modify assignments and exams   
  • Assist students with schedule management and accessing technology (D2L, email, etc.) 
  • Maintain documentation for weekly student progress 
  • Break down tasks into teachable components 
  • Act as liaison between KSU students, faculty, staff, and Academy staff 
  • Encourage social engagement on campus

Dr. Rochelle Harris Receives the Distinguished Honors Faculty Award 

Honors English instructor Dr. Rochelle Harris was recognized with the Honors College's annual Distinguished Honors Faculty Award at the Honors College Recognition Luncheon on April 28th. The Distinguished Honors Faculty Award recognizes excellence in teaching and mentoring of Honors students. Candidates for the award are identified through nominations from Honors students and administrators, and selected by a committee including Honors faculty and students.

This year's recipient is Honors English professor  Dr. Rochelle Harris. 

Dr. Harris stood out to the selection committee because of her service-learning teaching pedagogy, which combines the teaching of first-year composition with real-world writing projects for community organizations.  Her honors students have researched and written docent scripts for the historic Root House in Marietta, developed educational modules to interpret exhibits on the AIDS epidemic at the Zuckerman Museum of Art, and developed educational programming for homeschool tour groups who visit Historic Oakland Cemetery. Her students said the following about Dr. Harris and her class: 
  • "The way information was presented through the study of the Gothic was literally the coolest learning experience I've ever been a part of."
     
  • "I used to hate writing and dreaded taking this class.  She was able to make writing interesting and fun for me."
     
  • "I feel like I learned skills that I will continue to use long after I am finished with this class." 
KSU Honors Scholar Yutong Yang Offered Teaching Assistantship at Wake Forest University

Yutong Yang graduated as an Honors Scholar this spring with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics. 

Yutong has been offered a Teaching Assistantship at Wake Forest University with a full stipend and a full tuition scholarship. She was also accepted to prestigious programs at Georgia State University, University of Georgia, University of North Carolina Greensboro, and Northeastern University. After careful consideration, she has decided to attend Wake Forest University.

Yutong attributes her academic success to the University Honors Program and her work as a  Peer Learning Assistant, Supplemental Instruction Leader, and Math Tutor.
KSU Honors Student and DEHP Student Win the English Department's Annual Emerging Writers Contest

KSU Honors student Alyssa Sullivan received the first place award for her rhetorical analysis titled, "A Not-So-Ugly American's Transformation: The Beauty of a Kind Christmas Act."

KSU DEHP student Savannah Martin received the second place award for her rhetorical analysis, "The Eco-Gastronomic Mirror." 

DEHP student Zachary Mnich was a finalist for his  r hetorical analysis, "A Real Ad for a Virtual Sport."
