OBN BioTuesday 6th
June 2017 - Veterinary Science and Translational Medicine
Thank you to the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey for providing a superb venue for the event and to Anton Hutter from Venner Shipley who came up with the concept for and sponsored the event.

Our panel of speakers included, Prof. Noel Fitzpatrick (of The SuperVet/ Fitzpatrick Referrals of Channel 4 fame),  Prof. Roberto La Ragione, the driving force behind the recent developments at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Erwin Blomsma CEO of ViroVet NV (Belgium) (and also a Board Member at FlandersBio) and Steve Nanchen, Advisor for  Elanco Animal Health (part of Lilly), Switzerland.  Thank you to Erwin and Steve for coming to the UK for the event.

The speakers provided ample evidence of the benefits and possibilities of cross-fertilisation between veterinary and human medicine and in both directions.  Example areas include the development of treatments for bone cancers, repurposing of human antivirals for animal use and ways to shorten lead times for development of drugs for human use based on more intelligent use of data from drug development work in the animal health context.

The event received good feedback from attendees and we look forward to working with Venner Shipley and the Vet School for future events that capitalise on the superb life sciences ecosystem at the University of Surrey including the onsite Medical School, Vet School and Research Park.

From July to September each year undergraduate teams around the world compete by designing and carrying out their own research projects, which are presented at an international conference in October at UCSF, California, USA. Teams design and build machines and structures out of the basic molecules of life - DNA, RNA and proteins.

Oxford University are seeking financial support for the first UK BIOMOD team. In addition to the support they have received from the university, they are seeking industry sponsorship.
The university are moving quickly. At this stage, they have selected an interdisciplinary team of four undergraduates, and they have decided on a project to undertake

Forthcoming Events
We are pleased to announce details of a new OBN BioTuesday event on Tuesday 4 July that we are running in collaboration with Penningtons Manches at their offices at the Oxford Business Park.

The event will address the topic of:
'Devising an efficient roadmap for early stage & start-up companies to maximise value and the chance of success'

This is a broad reaching and extremely useful subject matter that is designed to guide and support early stage and start-up companies.  We will be joined by several thought-leaders on the night who will share their knowledge on topics such as financing, IP, talent, organisation and project planning to help businesses progress at their earliest stage of evolution and avoid potential pitfalls along the way.

The event starts at 18.00 and finishes at 21.30 and along with the presentations includes plenty of time for networking over a drink and nibbles.

OBN members: Free | OBN additional members: £25+VAT | Non-members: £50+VAT.  To book your place at this event, place register for a ticket here.
