This coming Monday, June 12 marks the one year anniversary of the Pulse tragedy in our city. It has been designated Orlando United Day - A Day of Love and Kindness by both the City of Orlando and Orange County Government.

Our School Resource Officer, Andrew Bishop, is on the Orlando Police Department SWAT team and received a Medal of Honor for his actions as a first responder on June 12, 2016. Officer Bishop has been with the Orlando Police Department for 22 years and has served as an SRO for the last 11 years. As you can imagine, all of us at Jones High School are very proud of Officer Bishop. This coming Monday, kindly take a moment to remember the 49 innocent members of our community who lost their lives one year ago.

Officer Andrew Bishop,
Jones HS School Resource Officer

I would like to thank all of the students, parents, alumni, and community members who have reached out to me so far. I have enjoyed speaking with each and every one of you and you've truly made me feel welcome. I look forward to working with you to continue the amazing work that was accomplished this school year.

We are busy planning for a successful 2017-2018 school year. Students, please do your part by getting a head start on your summer reading assignments. You can also prevent the "summer slide" by spending 30 minutes a day on Khan Academy, a free resource available to all OCPS students.

Be sure to follow us on social media over the summer. You can also subscribe to our Remind text alerts by texting your first and last name to 470.440.0980.

Have a great weekend and if you are traveling, please drive safely.

Sincerely,

Allison Kirby
Principal

Friday's Motivational Moment!
OCPS Minority Achievement Office's 2017 District-Wide Chess Competition . . .

Many in our community may not be aware of the fact that OCPS operates a very helpful department called the Minority Achievement Office. Extremely pro-active, they deliver on many initiatives to help students. One of their latest accomplishments was this year's chess competition.

Kindly invest a few moments to click on the YouTube video below . . . it will make your day!

2017 OCPS Chess Tournament (Minority Achievement Office)

A Robinswood Middle student contemplates his next move at this year's tournament held at UCF

One mom shares how chess has helped her daughter and how the game has provided
benefits in "all kinds of ways" such as learning patience, strategy, and learning how to slow down.

Another parent comments on how much her son loves playing the game and was picked
out of the top 10 from his school.

You will be surprised at how young the children were in this year's tournament!

Time to get underway, but a handshake first in the spirit of good sportsmanship . . .

Meet the 2016-2017 Robinswood Middle Chess Club!

A powerful moment was captured here at the conclusion of this year's tournament as
students from throughout OCPS were about to receive their trophies.

What is the Minority Achievement Office at OCPS?
