Senior Seminars Expand Horizons
The Friday senior seminars are an integral part of our Senior Work Study program.  Our seniors have been privileged to hear shiurim from Rabbi Adler regarding the role of women in positions of Torah leadership, where Rabbi Adler has masterfully introduced the talmidim to the full range of primary sources, from Tanach, Chazal, and Rishonim on this topic of vital communal importance.  Thanks to Rabbi Adler's shiurim, our talmidim will have a much deeper and rigorous perspective on this subject which is oft-discussed, but too often, without full appreciation of the range of sources within the mesorah regarding this complex issue.
Two weeks ago. Ms. Beth Goldman, the director of New York Legal Assistance Group, and mother of Joseph Solomon ('17) addressed the talmidim regarding her career in the law, ranging from prestigious judicial clerkships, private practice, public service (Ms. Goldman served as Commissioner of the City of New York in the Bloomberg administration), and finally, in the non-profit sector, where she oversees the administration of desperately needed legal services to underprivileged New Yorkers. In her talk, Ms. Goldman emphasized three critical points concerning selecting  and navigating a career: first, choosing an area which speaks to one's  interests and passions; second, the need for excellent training in that area, which she received in her early years in private practice; and finally, the need for integrity in all of one's professional decisions.

Last week, our graduating seniors heard from OU-JLIC representative Rabbi Shalom Axelrod regarding the opportunities which are available both in Israel and the United States of America on college campuses which the OU makes available to college students across the country.  Thank you to Dr. Garry Katz, director of College Guidance, for coordinating this element of the program.

Dr. Joseph Shatzkes Addresses Freshman Class
Yesterday, TABC's Biology Department hosted Dr. Joseph Shatzkes of Englewood Cardiology Consultants as he shared his expertise in the cardiovascular system and staying healthy. This is the third year in a row in which TABC has been privileged to share in Dr. Shatzkes' wealth of knowledge. Dr. Shatzkes is a board certified physician in cardiovascular diseases, internal medicine, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Students learned the importance of exercise, making proper diet choices and avoiding known risk factors for cardiac related issues.  This presentation served as a culmination of a year's worth of study in units  pertaining to the human body.  The science textbook came alive and the students walked away with several important life lessons as well.
Rabbi Yoni Mandelstam's
Shiurim Visit YU
Rabbi Yoni Mandelstam took his two Gemara shiurim to the Yeshiva University Beit Midrash on Thursday. The students learned intensely as they prepared for their final Gemara exams and were priveleged to hear a shiur from YU Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Baruch Simon. The trip enabled our students to experience an intensive learning environment, inspiring them to appreciate the significance of Talmud Torah.

Two TABC Students Published
Two TABC students have recently had essays published in a college publication.  The Hofstra University: Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency annually publishes a book of essays by students in AP high school classes for American History or Government. This year's topics revolved around the president's inauguration. Shmuel Adler '18 of the AP American History class wrote an essay on the question: Did President Donald Trump's inaugural address focus on principles that unify the American people, as inaugural speeches traditionally do? Why or Why not? Yaakov Miller '17 of the AP United States Government and Politics class wrote his essay on: How can the Trump White House and media develop a cooperative relationship to convey information to the American public?
Alumni Gather for Lunch & Learn in NYC
What an exciting afternoon it was!  Rabbis Adler, Yablok and Jachter joined alumni for a midtown Manhattan Lunch and Learn this past  Tuesday.  Graciously hosted by Yitz Rosenberg '99 in the offices of Greystone Corp. In a beautiful conference room with a breathtaking view of Central Park and its majestic surroundings, alumni had the opportunity to hear Rav Adler deliver an inspiring analysis of the Kedusha of Yerushalayim.  Presented in Rav Adler's inimitable manner, there were even some light moments fondly reminiscing of days at TABC.  In one memorable moment Noam Block '04 presented an insight from Rashi he learned from a wonderful shiur he enjoyed at TABC.  The topic was most timely, presented on the eve of this special Yom Yerushalayim, during which we thanked Hashem for 50 years of Yerushalayim's reunification.  The  learning was superb,  lunch was plentiful and delicious and the feeling of warm camaraderie was palpable.  We thank Yitz Rosenberg for facilitating, together with Rabbi Jachter, yet another meaningful alumni experience.
TABC Students Win Multiple Awards

BOOK AWARDS & REAGAN LEADERSHIP AWARDS

Many colleges and universities across the United States partner with high schools to ceremonially award College Book Awards to exceptional high school upperclassmen, usually juniors, who are well-rounded students who want to make a difference in their community, nation, and world.  Over the past few years TABC has had the privilege of presenting students with the Brandeis University and Yeshiva University Book Awards and this year we are also proud to bestow three of our students with the President Reagan Leadership Award.

The Brandeis University book award is presented for a commitment to civic engagement, community service, political activism, social justice, or volunteer work. This year it has been awarded to Yitzchak Tollinsky, a young man who has proven his leadership and devotion through his work with the NCSY JOLT program, Write on for Israel Program and the regional board of NCSY.

The Yeshiva University Torah U'Madda Book Award is presented to juniors who are academically motivated in both secular and Judaic studies and are active members of their school and the overall Jewish community.  This year the awardees are Yonatan Sturm and Ephraim Tiger.  Yonatan has been one of the top fundraisers in our Pink Day annual campaign and in other chessed endeavors.    He has been an active member and leader of the TABC Hockey team, the Math League and a contributor to Kol Torah.  Ephraim Tiger has shown devotion to the total Jewish community through his work with the Sinai Lunch Buddies Program, Tomchei Shabbos, and the TABC hockey team.

The Reagan Leadership Award recognizes outstanding high school students whose leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship are emblematic of our 40th President.  Our three awardees are Yonatan Fine, Yaakov Zinberg and Alexander Ostrin.     Yonatan has devoted a great deal of time working with YACHAD, other special needs groups, chessed missions, the UJA, and the student council.    Yaakov is recognized among his classmates and teachers as a leader, whether he holds an official position or not.  Among other positions, he has been the captain of the JV College Bowl Team.   Alexander Ostrin is a sophomore who was the captain of the JV Basketball team, an editor of the Israel Report,  a member of both of our special honors programs and an acknowledge leader.

TABC is proud of these young men and all of our students.  May they continue to exemplify our yeshiva's mission and contribute positively to our community.

NORTH AMERICAN JERUSALEM CONTEST
Congratulations to Eitan Leff for placing 15th nationwide in the Jerusalem Contest. Beginning in September, Eitan had to master topics in astronomy from both Torah and physics sources. He successfully navigated weekly exams, a mini-research project, a power-point presentation, as well as a final exam. We can be assured of great accomplishments coming from Eitan in the future. We are very proud of him.
TWO TABC ALUMNI ARE YU VALEDICTORIANS

Congratulations to Shua Katz '11 and Akiva Marder '13 who were valedictorians at this week's Yeshiva University commencement ceremony. You may enjoy this article about them and their fellow honorees.

This past Thursday, the College Guidance Department held its annual Spring College Fair for juniors and their parents.  The program began with brief presentations from all colleges in attendance and was followed by three round-robin sessions. This year's fair was attended by twenty-five colleges from as far north as Massachusetts and as far south as Maryland.  The attendees even hailed from an international school in Israel.  The schools that presented included: Princeton University, The Cooper Union, Binghamton University, Brandeis University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, New York University, City University of New York (The Macaulay Honors Program, Queens College, Baruch College, Hunter College, City College and the College of Staten Island), Rutgers University, Lander College for Men (Division of Touro College), University of Massachusetts Amherst, SUNY Albany, Yeshiva University, Bergen Community College, The Technion and IDC Herzliya.
