Why try to explain miracles to your kids when you can just have them plant a garden.
~Robert Brault

Welcome to spring! The scent of lilacs are in the air and everywhere you look there are flowering crabs in all their glory! The nights are still cool and with the occasional day of rain, it's perfect weather for planting trees, shrubs, perennials and cool season veggies (peas, lettuce, kale, spinach, cabbage). Gardeners, be aware of those nighttime temperatures and plant your warm veggies with care (tomatoes, eggplant, beans).

Growing our own food has so many benefits; from cost savings, to educating our children, to growing what we want to eat and so much more. Inspiration can be found from vegetable seeds, start-us, patio veggies, edible hanging baskets, herbs, herb gardens and more!

Visit our From the Veggie Patch page for tips on growing, harvesting fruits and veggies as well as how to eat them - YUM! Our Herb of the Week is in full swing with a featured herb each week describing the history, growing tips and recipes.

There is sunshine in the forecast! Lets dig in and get planting!!

Top 5 Plants that Repel Mosquitoes
Hidcote Lavender
With the cool damp spring weather, mosquitoes are definitely the uninvited guest to any cookout or outdoor party! Choose plants that have strong, citrus fragrance to help keep the bugs at bay.

1. Citronella (Scented Geranium): extracts are so effective at keeping mosquitoes away, they are now an important ingredient for many commercial repellents.

2. Lemon Balm: used in making citronella oil, can be invasive, best to grow in a container

3. Catnip: cats love it, mosquitoes hate it!

4. Lemon Grass: also known as the mosquito grass, can be grown in a garden or in pots to be moved around

5. Lavender: repels moths, flies, fleas and mosquitoes - use it fresh or dried!
Feature Veggie :: Lettuce and Kale Gardens

Growing lettuce in containers is fun and easy, you can harvest fresh, crispy and organic lettuce leaves to add to your salads in no time. Lettuce and Kale are cool season crops so this makes spring (and fall) a great time to grow it!

There is nothing better than a regular cut of home-grown leaves. Try it for yourself and eat fresh!
