The Fauquier Community Theatre is proud to offer the community a heartwarming Christmas musical for the the holidays. Sanders Family Christmas is the sequel to Connie Ray and Alan Bailey's wildly successful bluegrass gospel musical Smoke on the Mountain.
It's December 24, 1941, and America is going to war. So is Dennis Sanders of the Sanders Family Singers. Join Pastor Mervin Oglethorpe and the rest of the Sanders Family as they send Dennis off with hilarious and touching stories and twenty-five Southern Gospel Christmas favorites.
Stepping into the shoes of Ted Ballard, the director of FCT's 2014 production of Smoke on the Mountain, was a bit intimidating. However, the cast of The Sanders Family Christmas has welcomed me with open arms. Sherry Bendtreturns to her role of the mother, Vera Sanders, with Michael Golder reprising his role of Dennis, the boy twin. The church ladies, Teena Stevic and Jo Ballingee, will be seen again in the amen corner, and Joel Saunders has also returned to the cast, butthis time as Burl, the head of the Sander's Family. These FCT veterans have welcomed me to the family as well as two other FCT veterans, Don Richardson (Uncle Stanley) and Krista Poole (June Sanders, who doesn't sing, she signs), and two FCT first-timers, Rachel Dodson (Denise) and Carlton Yelle (Rev. Oglethorpe.) The cast is rounded out by a superb group of musicians who have been anticipating this sequel and cleared their calendars to join the Sanders family again on stage.
This is the perfect Christmas show - familiar carols, heartwarming stories, and old-fashioned values. The Sanders Family Christmas draws in its audience with its casual, country charm. It holds us tight by its genuine, nostalgic storytelling and its feel-good gospel music. Then it releases us back into the world with a bit more joy and optimism then when we arrived.
I could not have dreamed of a better cast that this one for my maiden voyage as a director with FCT. The audience is in for such a delightful holiday experience. Each characterindividually is engaging and entertaining, but as the actors became a family, their characters' appeal has become infectious.
The Sanders Family takes us back to another time when our country was in crisis and reminds us what gave us the strength to survive and thrive. Diane King, Director

Synopsis:
The renowned comic actor and author of Picasso at the Lapine Agile, Steve Martin, provides a wild satire adapted from the classic German play about Louise and Theo Markes, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Though she pulls them up quickly, he thinks the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise's momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Markes' home. Oblivious of their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, happy to collect rent from both the foppish poet and the whiny hypochondriac.
