Racing Information -Another Darley Awards is in the Books
Paddys Day topped off an outstanding season in 2016 by winning the coveted Horse of The Year trophy, as well as Older Horse, at the 30th annual Darley Awards sponsored by the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival and held at the Dolby Theatre.
In the other awards, RB Nash claimed the 3-Year-Old Colt/Gelding, RB Kinkie the 3-Year-Old Filly, and RB Madymoisells the 4-Year-Old Filly, all for owner/breeder Dianne Waldron. Dream Pearl, owned by the partnership of Dorothy Burt, Evelyn Call, Corey Soltau and Terri Eaton, took home Champion Older Mare.
Evelyn Call reported on the mare Dream Pearl. The owners and trainers of the horses nominated for the National and International awards had rooms and breakfasts provided by the event's sponsors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Our group owners & friends from the Bay Area) went Friday night, March 31 to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood for the award ceremonies (red carpet and all).
We were thrilled and a big cheer went up when Pearl was announced the winner for Older (age 5 and up) Mares. We got to go up on stage to receive the trophy and the emcee stuck a microphone in our faces for comments. The ceremonies were being broadcast to the Middle East and Europe. Pretty heady stuff.
Pearl was also a nominee for the International award. We did not expect her to get that one. Not enough major races out of our area. A super French mare got that one.
The next day Pearl raced at Santa Anita in the $100,000 Sheikha Fatima race. She did well considering the difficulties, coming in 8th in a 12 horse field. She was running against the top male horses in the country, 3 half brothers taking the first three places. She was in the 12th post position so was the last to go into the starting gate and the gate opened before she had a chance to get set. She was on the outside all the way, with no chance to move closer to the rail without getting trapped behind a big bunch of horses. Coming out of the last turn, she was bumped off stride and almost sideways by another horse. But she got going again and at least beat the horse that had bumped her. She's tougher than I thought she was. We are very proud of her. I wish they would run a race for fillies and mares at the event. She would clean up on them. We visited the barns after the race and she looked very good. She is back at ranch for a couple of weeks rest before starting training for the Fair season starting at Pleasanton in mid-June.
On Sunday, April 2, we went to a banquet at the hotel and got to go on stage again as they presented the winners again. Then lots of LOUD entertainment. We didn't have the main course served until 11:00pm. I'm glad we at least got the salad early. It was fun.
Golden Gate Arabian Horse Association
The offices and Directors of GGAHA wish to thank all exhibitors patrons, sponsors, and volunteers who came or contributed to our April 1-2 Show, making 2017 one of our club's most profitable event in years. Moving from a 3-day to a 2-day show made a big difference financially for the club and the Show Committee felt the flow of classes improved, making 2 full days of events for the general public. We are already planning for 2018 Arabian and Half Arabian event which will be our 60th anniversary of putting on the show.
New Events under consideration:
1-Day Trail Seminar and Demonstration (all breeds)
1-day Cowboy Dressage Demonstration (all breeds)
Drawing for a trip
Upcoming: GGAHA annual August BBQ and general membership meeting (date and details TBA)
Our youth membership is growing steadily under the expert guidance of Youth Coordinator Bryn Davies. Bryn's daughter, McKenzie (Kenzie) was our show photographer and did an excellent job, even displaying photos on a PC at the show and printing the photos on the spot. Very professional. Our youth have been busy celebrating their proms recently and hope to plan one or two upcoming events soon. A special "Get Well Soon" goes out to out club Trail Ride Coordinator, Robin Everett who suffered a broken hip when she was unfortunately tripped while walking her horse.
The Gold Coast Classic will be held at the Santa Cruz Co. Fairgrounds in Watsonville on June 9, 10, 11, 2017. Five miles from the ocean as the crow flies. Classes will end about 6pm on Friday. With no evening classes scheduled for Saturday or Sunday evening there is plenty of time to visit the beach or the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Entries close on May 26 with post entries being also accepted. Motel reservation should be made early as the area motels fill fast. Entries will be posted on www.goldcoastarabian.org and www.horsenumbers.com. Those wishing hard copies of the premium can contact me by e-mail at shayzar2@aol.com or call (408) 848-1390.
CNASHA reports on changes in our board which will be effective next week. We deeply regret the resignations of Margie Pope and Margo Seabourn, both of whom have been wonderful contributors to the club. Christine Raposo has agreed to take on Margo's job as club secretary and Susy Johnson is the new director at large. Welcome to both of them.
We are working to finalize plans for the "new" role as host of the Region 3 sport horse championship pre-show, and the continuing role of hosting the off-site Pacific Slope Championships in fences and driving and the Region 3 Sport Horse Championships. I believe I am reliably informed that Rita Mason has this all in hand!
Wine Country AHA Youth members won first place in our local Sebastopol Apple Blossom Parade which was April 22 in downtown Sebastopol, CA. We had a live Arabian horse riding on a float. Congratulations to all our youth members and Patti Belanger our Youth Coordinator for organizing this event. This was such great publicity event. We won a beautiful trophy.
On Aril 29, we had a Native Costume performance at Hoofbeats in the Vineyard Event. We had information booth with all things Arabians, plus free crayons and coloring pages for the kids. We raffled off a beautiful print by Kelly Kenneally Photography. This benefits the Santa Rosa Junior College and Equi-Ed Riding. We signed up two new members at this event. It was a great day. On Sunday April 30, of us one of us attended an event put on by HALTER, Horse and Livestock Team Emergency Response. The event was called Ranch Readiness, so many awesome speakers, very informative on what to do in a disaster. If they ever come to your town I highly recommend going.
We had a meet and greet fundraiser at Flagship Brewpub on May 3 for the Human Race Week. People mentioned Wine Country Arabians and they donated 15% to us and the Human Race.
On May 5 a group of us walked in the Human Race, had on our club t-shirts and handed out club brochures and the same time walked for a great cause.
On May 5, 6, 7 we will hosted a Axel Steiner Dressage Clinic at Fairwind Farm in Santa Rosa.
All of these were successful events.
Our Dressage Schooling Shows are starting. Our first one is May 27, June 24, July 29, August 26, Sept. 30, and October 28.
We have a few other events planned for May as it is Arabian Horse Month.

Wisconsin Desert Horse Association (WDHA) Activities:
A lot has happened since the first of the year at WDHA. February 4th we had our annual Year-End/High Point Banquet with wonderful attendance that matched our 50th Anniversary celebration. Along with the usual events of a club video, drawings/silent auction, 50/50 drawings that support the last standing Futurity/Maturity program in a Wisconsin Region 10 club. We also had posters displayed around the room with pictures of events WDHA hosted or members participated in throughout the year.
On March 18th our youth members had the opportunity to participate at the Region 10 Judging Clinic hosted by Westridge Farms and they participated in the Horse Judging contest at Midwest Horse Fair (MHF) in Madison, WI. On Saturday we featured a "Meet and Greet the Arabian Horse" where people could come in close contact and actually pet and hug our beloved Arabian horses.
WDHA Member Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award:
Longtime member Kristin Urban was selected for the 2017 Wisconsin State Horse Council "Lifetime Achievement Award" on a commendable nomination written by Gail Rentmeester on behalf of WDHA. The Midwest Horse Fair (MHF) 2017 Souvenir Program described Kristen "Every baseball team wants a utility player, and Kristin Urban easily claims that title for the Arabian breed". Kristin has served the WDHA for 30 years, and has served on every position of that organization. She has designed flyers and brochures for the Arabian events, chaired many of the shows, and acted as the announcer for various activities. Kristin has bred Class A Championship, Regionals, and National champion horses that have won awards for their owners.
