College Launches Strategic Planning
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine has launched a strategic planning process to bring our goals and aspirations together under a collective vision and a plan to make this vision a reality. A website dedicated to providing regularly updated information about the strategic planning process is available here.
As the planning process progresses, multiple avenues by which the College of Medicine community can share input will be provided. Until that time, please feel free to offer your thoughts or ask questions through the form on the site.
As we move forward in planning, more information will become available on the site.

Psychiatry Residency Approved
The college
has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for a university-sponsored residency program in psychiatry, in collaboration with its member teaching hospitals in the college's Graduate Medical Education (GME)
Consortium
as well as South County Mental Health Center.
This new program brings a total of four residency programs to the university: internal medicine (launched in 2014); general surgery (launched in 2016); emergency medicine (launches this July); and psychiatry (launches in 2018).

Canine Assisted Therapy for Students
As the school year comes to a close, medical students ramp up their studying for peak stress season. Many found comfort in man's best friend right in the lobby of the college.
The American Medical Student Association invited certified therapy dogs from Canine Assisted Therapy to give these stressed-out students some love. Canine Assisted Therapy, a non-profit organization, also provides canine companionship for those in hospitals, nursing homes, hospice organization, assisted living facilities. It's a fun session for the dogs and a much-needed stress relief for the students.

Office of Admissions Hosts
Welcome Back Event
The college hosted Welcome Back 2017 on April 29. Nearly 60 enthusiastic applicants attended the event, which provided them with a "day in the life of a medical student" program.
Prospective students had the opportunity to participate in problem-based learning, a Simulation Center case study, and a closed panel with current FAU medical students.

M.D. Student Receives Humana Honors
Each year, Humana South Florida sponsors the Terry G. Smith Memorial Preceptorship for three medical students who have declared an interest in primary care medicine during the summer between their first and second years of medical school. The program is funded through the Humana SFL Senior Product Health Services budget.
This year's recipient is
Courtland Samuels
whose preceptorship will be located at a Humana affiliated practice in Fort Lauderdale.

College Hosts DNA Day Event
The college celebrated National DNA Day on April 25. This event was an opportunity for students, teachers and the greater community to learn about and celebrate the latest advances in genomic research through interactive activities that included live cell imaging demonstrations, genotyping workshops,
DNA-related career advising and tours of the college.
National DNA Day commemorates the discovery of DNA's double helix in 1953 and the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. Since then, there has been a lot of excitement about the potential for personalized medicine that involves using genomic information about an individual to inform his/her clinical care. Already, personalized medicine is transforming the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and rare diseases.
DNA Day provided everyone a window into this future and showcased the college's dedication to making this future a reality.

Dr. Drowos Visits China to Provide Continuing Education
Dr. Joanna Drowos spent April 21-30 in Beijing, China, on behalf of the International Primary Care Educational Alliance. She was a visiting professor at Capital Medical University in Beijing, providing continuing education for the country's best 40 general practice doctors at various health centers. She travelled alongside two other osteopathic physician colleagues. They reviewed musculoskeletal exam techniques and differential diagnosis, which these physicians will share with their colleagues at their respective facilities.

Three Master's Students Head
To Medical School
 Allan Joseph, Patricia Lewis and Michael Medlin, recent master's in biomedical science graduates, are heading to medical school.
Allan is going to Florida State University while Michael and Patricia are staying here at FAU.

M.D./Ph.D. Student Heads to Scripps
To Continue Training
Congratulations to Cody Jackson.
After completing year two of the medical school curriculum at the college, Cody is beginning his Ph.D. training this month at the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter -- our first medical student to make this transition within the FAU and Scripps dual M.D./Ph.D. program.

Competency in Medical Spanish Interest Group Hosted a Cinco de Mayo Event

The Competency in Medical Spanish interest group members recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo.
The activity, held on May 3, was well attended, with great food, dancing and lots of fun. In addition, the attendees learned how to provide nutrition tips in Spanish to patients.

Fourth-year Medical Student Earns Public Health Award
Genevieve Tuveson, a fourth-year medical student, won a 2017 Excellence in Public Health Award from the U.S. Public Health Service Physician Professional Advisory Committee.
Dr. Nirmala Prakash nominated Ms. Tuveson for her dedication to the college and to our FAMU-FAU Medical Scholars Program.
"This award is a testament to the education provided by the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and to the high caliber of your students. We hope that this will encourage your faculty and students to continue their strong work in public health," said

Recent Publications & Presentations
Student's Article Published
Claudia Ghisa, a third-year medical student, published an article in the journal,
Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control. The article is titled "
Retrospective report of antimicrobial susceptibility observed in bacterial pathogens isolated from ocular samples at Mount Sinai Hospital, 2010 to 2015."
Medical Students Present Research at Geriatrics Meeting
 FAU medical students presented posters at the American Geriatrics Society Meeting in San Antonio, May 18-20.
Dr. Mandi Sehgal mentored the students on these posters but could not attend the meeting because she was attending the Harvard Macy leadership program.

Studies Receive Highest Altmetric Scores in Psychiatric Services
Two articles, coauthored by
Dr. John Newcomer, have garnered two of the highest Altmetric scores out of all Psychiatric Services articles published in April.
Altmetric provides a composite score of the quality and quantity of online attention and activity surrounding research. Altmetric tracks the number of mentions in traditional and social media as well as researcher-to-researcher sharing. The score appears in the multicolored badge alongside your online article.

Resident to Present Poster at ASTRO
Internal Medicine resident Anatoly Nikolev's abstract has been selected for display in the poster viewing session during the Annual Meeting of the
American Society of Radiation Oncology
Sept. 24-27 in San Diego. The meeting has a robust poster hall that displays nearly 2,000 posters each year. Click here to see the abstract.
The study abstract will be published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology following the meeting. A
ffiliate faculty member, Dr. Rashmi Benda, coauthored the study.
