Rector's Reflections

Celebrating Our God beyond Understanding

The festival of the Holy Trinity celebrates the wonder of relationship with God while leaving us distinctly dissatisfied with our limited understanding of what God is. While guarding against the idolatry of language, we survey our scripture, doctrine, creeds, and symbols of our heritage. Equally important, we pray for God to inspire fresh, innovative ideas of God in the present moment.

Sunday's gospel (Matthew 28:16-20) contains one of the few biblical references to the trinitarian formula. As the eleven are commissioned to make disciples, baptize, and teach, we are invited to consider our calling to influence the world with the good news of God's love. The text from Second Corinthians (13:11-13) also includes a kind of naming of the Holy Trinity in an affectionate sign-off of a personal letter. With the psalm praising God the creator and sustainer of all creation, Genesis 1 (1-2:4a) relates the first of two creation stories, this one an ancient liturgy celebrating God as a divine plural.

That God that is beyond our understanding may be both troubling and comforting. The temptation may be to attempt to apprehend the idea of God with our intellect. Some preachers offer the worshiping assembly a showcase of various models for God. The result is usually disappointing and feeds our bias toward intellectualism. Another possibility is to celebrate God's presence in all its glory and colorful wonder and our belonging to this wonder-full God. [Sundays and Seasons, 2017]

As our sending hymn for Sunday invites: "Come, join the dance of the trinity, before all worlds begun-the interweaving of the Three, the Father, Spirit, Son."

Dancing together,
Bill +

New Bible Study

Thursday afternoons 3:00-4:00 pm followed by Eucharist at 4:00 pm in the Beck Memorial Library. Please bring your favorite Bible or use one from the library.

Every generation in the church worries, rightly, about people who just glide along, seeming to enjoy what they hear in church but without it making any real difference. James faced exactly the same problem in the very first generation. So it's not surprising that translating belief into action-making sure faith is the real thing-is near the heart of his message. That kind of faith, he explains, is the faith that matters, the faith that justifies, the faith that saves. We need that kind of faith today. These sessions on James's passionate letter will help you live out a faith that makes a difference.

Dinner Bell Cookout Thursday, June 15th

Join us for a community cookout on Thursday at 5:00 pm in the courtyard (Stevens Room if raining). We are hosting two events the third Thursdays of June and July when Dinner Bell is on hiatus because the parish hall is used for the summer fair. Dinner Bell will resume weekly on Thursday, August 10th.

Monthly E Newsprint

Our Parish Administrator Deb Hoyt has expanded the bulletin announcement insert the first Sunday of the month to be a mini paper newsletter. The Monthly E Newsprint will be printed in color and include the monthly calendar (suitable for hanging on your bulletin board or refrigerator), important upcoming dates, monthly ministry assignments, a feature story, All Saints Spotlights of members, and a note from our Rector (this month it includes worship/liturgy notes for the summer). These will be mailed to those parishioners who are not online and receive our Weekly E News.

All Saints' Church Vestry Retreat Overview

Reflections by Gerry DeGeorge

The Vestry gathered on retreat at the home of Michael Scadron in Gilford on Saturday, June 3, 2017.
Those attending included Pastor Bill Petersen, Senior Warden Don Holm, Junior Warden Bill Meyer, Treasurer Beth Smith, Anne Hunt, Jim Thomas, Carolyn Sundquist, Michael Scadron and Clerk Gerry DeGeorge.  Our gathering is best described as abundant. Michael received all graciously and we toured his home which is filled with artwork, a sense of family, large spaces and magnificent grounds overlooking the lake. A beautiful lunch had been laid out for us and we convened in comfort.

OPENING - We opened with Confession and a Renewal of the Baptismal Covenant. This is the traditional way of the 'rite of Christian initiation'.

WORD - I thought Bill's presentation of the Word, Baptism and the Baptismal Covenant, was profound and personal for each member. It was the deepest conversation I've ever had about the meaning of Baptism and the responsibility of carrying out one's Baptismal Covenant. It was apparent our backgrounds differ and how this sacred covenant is carried in each of us is varied. The learning emphasized that our Baptism is the basis of our Christian lives. For me, this was the most helpful part of the retreat.

OFFERING - We had viewed a Ted Talk The Golden Circle: Why, How, What & Developing a Vision Strategy based on What's Your Why? by leadership expert Simon Sinek. After a delicious lunch, we discussed the Ted Talk and attempted to discern what was our 'Why' at All Saints. Areas of our ministry which fulfilled our why were examined. Then we worked with a Vision Strategy and addressed the questions on Bill's handout. Again a full discussion followed. We talked about general areas of concern, i.e. using the nursery school space, but not business specifics. Throughout, people shared personal stories and ideas flowed easily.

SENDING - Our closing echoed the format presented above, which I had chosen to use before I reread this material, and which I didn't catch at the time we were doing it.  For me, it was a lovely closing and reflected the whole retreat which was inclusive and concept-based, giving me a stronger, calmer base, from which to go forth to live within my Baptismal Covenant and serve as a leader in All Saints' Church.

Wolfeboro Reads Summer Reading List

Pastors Bill and Gina encourage you to select a few books from our summer reading list to enjoy over these next months. We will reconvene in September to share reflections from our readings and to embark again on a common read. Pick-up the list in the narthex lobby at church or find it online: http://files.constantcontact.com/8937552f001/d2603408-cf54-4767-a12b-883b76f71b8c.pdf

In our last meeting of Discover Islam we decided to gift a set of children's books about Islam to the Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro libraries. If you would like to contribute towards the cost, send it to the church marked Wolfeboro reads.

Property Committee News
The property team met this week to plan upcoming projects.  After the meeting, the remaining storm  windows were taken down.

After the Church Fair, dates will be scheduled to paint the  hallway by the church office and to paint the front door and the Outreach building door, to touch up  railings in the choir loft and to install a foot scraper by the parking lot door.

Mission Outreach
7 Summer Placements and 1 Super Star!
An update from the Mission/Outreach Team

Learning to be a leader, to swim, to dance, to invent, to drive! Monies from The All Saints' Children's Initiative Fund, created with our 2017 Easter Offering, will help fund seven local youth in this wide array  of summer activities.

Tuftonboro's Camp Sentinel will have a high school student participating in a leadership program; twin ten year old sisters will also attend Camp Sentinel as campers. A new science program, Camp Invention in Tuftonboro, will have one attendee. Another student will be taking classes at Northeastern Ballet School's summer program in Wolfboro. A student with some health issues will attend ADA Camp Carefree and a high school student will be taking Driver's Education. We are pleased with our first attempt at this form of outreach.

Moving from local summer enrichment to high school in Kenya, our EFAC (Education for All Children) student, Mercy Keyona Amiani, has just completed the first term of her second year at Naivasha Girls High School and once again, Mercy ranked first in her class! Penny Meyer corresponds with Mercy and this is a quote from Mercy's last letter to Penny, which is really to all of us at All Saints.

"I have fully adapted to life in high school as I nowadays don't suffer homesickness. I also don't take it for granted to have my school fees being fully paid by the help of you. I give all my gratitude".

Thanks to all for your support in all the endeavors of the MOT!

Anne Hunt

Photo of Anne Hunt taken on Sept. 11, 2016 during Bishop Rob's blessing of the solar panels.

Wednesday evening's  Snowbird Potluck Dinner was a huge success. Those in attendance shared terrific food, and enjoyed fellowship and moments of laughter.

Anne Hunt, would undoubtably deflect congratulations on a wonderful evening to the Welcoming Committee, however her fingerprints for the success of the event were evident.  She not only served  graciously as the mistress of ceremonies, but her attention to detail resulted in a wonderful evening.

Through our tears we applauded after Anne thanked everyone for their prayers, and  good thoughts as she has squarely faced her medical issue. Anne stated with a smile and a twinkle in her eyes, "I'm feeling much better, and I'm still here."

Anne's laughter was heard by all who were also laughing as the slide show ran a video clip of Bishop Rob blessing the solar panels.  Anne's voice, on the video clip, can be clearly heard stating to the Bishop to hold tight on the power lift as she was bringing him back to earth from the heavens.

We give thanks to God that Anne is feeling better, and we continue to shower her and the Hunt family with prayers and positive thoughts.
John & Kit Peterson

The above photo was taken on May 14th.

Kit and John Peterson were married July 2, 1966, and the following summer visited Kit's aunt and uncle who owned a place in Wolfeboro.  It was love at first sight, not only for each other, but also for Wolfeboro.  They visited Wolfeboro each summer and in 1992 bought a home close to the Libby Museum.  Both were educators, Kit taught vocal music in the public schools and John taught history in a private academy.   They both were Episcopalians, and Kit played the organ in a small church in New Jersey and John sang in the choir.  When the couple retired in 1997, they moved to Wolfeboro.  They had been attending All Saints during their summer vacations, and it was an easy transition to full time status in Wolfeboro and at All Saints.

At All Saints both are members of the choir and three times Kit has been the organist as searches were done for permanent replacements.  In addition - to their contributions to the music program at All Saints - Kit is a member of the Flower Guild and has volunteered at Lord & Tailor.  In addition to the choir, John has been an Eucharistic Minister, and has volunteered for the summer fair.  In the community Kit is a past president of the Newcomers Club, and has been a Vice President of the Friends of Music.  Both have been long time members of the Clear Lakes Chorale. Kit continues to play the organ in the summer for the non denominational Mirror Lake Church.

Recently Kit and John moved to the Taylor Community in Laconia, and are neighbors of former All Saints music director Nixon & Saundra Bicknell.

Both the Peterson's continue to sing in our choir, and as you can see from the photo below Kit and Holly Simons performed this past Sunday an upbeat piano duet the Postlude hymn, Ev'ry time I feel the Spirit.

Even though this wonderful couple no longer live in Wolfeboro they are still active in the life of our church.  We are grateful that they continue to make All Saints their spiritual home.

Summer Fair News
  Happy Memorial Day Everyone!

We thought we would send along a reminder/update on the Fair.

Remember June 11th is the day we move items into the undercroft.  As of that day, the great sorting and pricing fun will begin.  Please let us know if you are having difficulties getting enough helpers for the sorting and/or the day of the fair.  We will do all we can to assist as needed.

Here's an update on the refugees selection of items after the fair.
The employees/volunteers from IINE will be selecting items at the completion of the fair.  We have decided to eliminate confusion and time, the IINE members must do the selection. There will be no refugees selecting items.  Only the members of IINE will be present and selecting items they know the refugees could use.  The goal is to have them complete their selections before  Wakefield Disposal arrives around 2:30 pm.  There will be no selection of items until 2:00 pm.  Nothing will be held for them.  We have asked that they arrive about 1:30 so they know what to take as soon as the fair is closed.  We hope this works with little confusion.

Jay and I will make sure the tables are ready for the move on the 11th.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Joanne Crowe  (603 930-2607; [email protected]) or Jay Wyman (603 569-3953; [email protected]).

 Snowbird Potluck Dinner
photos of Snowbird Potluck Dinner taken on Wed., June 7th

As the above photo illustrates an abundance of food was provided for the potluck dinner by those who attended the dinner

In the photo below, Reverend Bill Petersen opens the dinner with a prayer.

In the photo below Phil Wasmuth shared a slide / video show that covered events from our church from the 2016 to the 2017 potluck dinners.

In the photo below, Summer Fair co-chair Joanne Crowe gives an update, including moving the fair items from the garage to the Parish Hall this coming Sunday, June 11th.  Joanne appealed for help in this endeavor which will occur around 11:30 AM.

Wonderful food and fellowship were in abundance at the dinner

Dinner Bell
Thank you to all of you who have volunteered for the Dinner Bell weekly meal, it is truly appreciated!
