June 9:
Boise School District's Girls Powered STEM Event for girls going into grades 4-6 for the 2017-18 school year will continue at Garfield Elementary School. A total of 150 students are expected to participate in this year's two-day program, which began on June 8th at Amity Elementary School where students received hands-on learning in a wide variety of STEM subjects (pictured). at Garfield Elementary School, 1914 S. Broadway, Ave., Boise. The Girls Powered STEM Event is designed to encourage and inspire students in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering & Math. Students will attend workshops in the following STEM subjects:

June 12:
Boise School Board meeting, 6:00 p.m. , Dennis Technical Education Center, 8201 W. Victory Rd., Boise. The Board will: receive a demonstration from Team Tater (award-winning student robotics team); receive consent agenda items for review and approval; 2017-18 Budget hearing and approval; receive the 2017-18 Strategic Plan Action; approve Superintendent Contract Extension; approve out of state trips for 2017-18; review Second Readings and vote on proposed Board Policy changes. June 12 -15: Capital High School will present a Boy's Basketball Camp for grades 3-8 this June.

June 17: Families will enjoy a fun-filled evening of kids' activities and great films on seven evenings, beginning June 17, for
Movies Under the Stars in Boise.
The fun begins at 7 p.m. with free games for kids provided by the Boise Parks and Recreation Mobile Recreation Van. Kids will get moving with capture the flag, dodgeball and other field games.
At dusk, family-friendly movies are shown on a huge 30' inflatable movie screen.
The free family movies and fun are presented by
Boise Parks and Recreation and the
Boise Schools Education Foundation with support from Wesselman Solutions.

ummner Learning Opportunities: Learning doesn't stop in the summer in the Boise School District. We offer a wide variety of summer school classes for students to enhance their educational experiences. The District offers remediation assistance for elementary students in math, language and reading, as well as summer learning programs for secondary students, including Summer Driver Education, and a Summer Music Program for elementary and secondary students. Idaho Governor's Cup Scholarship Recipients Announced; Six Boise District Students Selected: Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter has
announced the recipients of the 2017 Governor's Cup Scholarships to Idaho colleges and universities, including six students selected from the Boise School District. The 42nd Governor's Cup fund-raising drive brought in enough money for 38 new scholarships to be award this year.
Recipients were chosen from among more than 1,000 applicants by the
Idaho Governor's Cup Scholarship Fund Inc.'s 16-member board of directors. Selections were made based on each applicant's commitment to public service, academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.
"In my 11th year as Governor, I continue to be impressed by the quality of our applicants and the difficult job of our board of directors in selecting the recipients. These really are great students from schools and communities large and small throughout our state - truly the pride of Idaho," Governor Otter said. "I am equally impressed and gratified by the continuing support of our generous sponsors who are investing in a brighter future for us all by helping these young men and women pursue their dreams beyond high school."
The Governor and First Lady Lori Otter held a reception honoring the Governor's Cup recipients on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Capitol. The 2017 Idaho Governor's Cup fund-raising event is scheduled September 7-9 in Sun Valley.
The award is $3,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, or two to three years for professional-technical programs, contingent upon the availability of funds. Below are the Boise School District students who were selected as Idaho Governor's Cup Scholarship recipients:

West Junior High Student Wins Bookmark Contest: West Junior High School 8th grade student Victoria Stapley (pictured) recently entered the Alaska Wild Bookmark Contest sponsored by the Alaska Wilderness League. Victoria was selected as the winner for the 5-8 grade division. She will receive an Alaska-themed prize pack, a copy of the book The Arctic Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land and 100 copies of her published bookmark (pictured right) in early June. Tanya Gordon is Victoria's Earth Science Instructor.
Borah Students Place 2nd in Division in 2017 Physics Bowl: A team of Borah High School students achieved a significant milestone in placing 2nd in Division 2 (2nd year or higher physics), Region 14 (Northwest states and the Philipines) in the recently held 2017 Physics Bowl. The team score consisted of the five individual scores by graduating seniors, Kyle Dinh, Morgan Draney, Evan Magnusson, Alex Rooney, and Joseph Davies (each pictured below). Borah placed higher than schools from the Philippines and the State of Washington. Borah also scored higher than any Northern California school (Region 13) and would have placed 3rd if scored with Southern California. In addition, Borah would have placed in the top 4 or won in any of the 14 Regions, which included some notable high schools like Adlai Stevenson High school in Illinois and Princeton High school in New Jersey. The Borah team was taught by Borah Physics Instructor Vic Hofstetter and got their start in Physics from former Borah Instructor Joe Crotty.
In making the announcement, contest organizers wrote: "You, your school, and your students can take great pride in this accomplishment. This year there were more than 7,100 studens participating from almost 277 school from the U.S., Canada, Kuwait, Mexico, Australia, Turkey, the Philippines, South Africa, the Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom, as well as almost 281 schools participating from China."

SUEZ Student Video Contest Recipients Announced: SUEZ is proud to sponsor a summer water conservation video contest for students in Boise Junior and Senior High Schools. Showing us water conservation through their eyes, students from grades 9-12 created commercials for SUEZ' Summer Conservation Campaign. The winning entries will air on local television and SUEZ' social media platforms during the summer season. The winning entry was awarded a $1,500 prize to their classroom from SUEZ. Second place was awarded $750 and third place a $500 donation to the Boise Schools Educational Foundation. Contest recipients include - 1st Place, Gracie Maulik, North Jr. High (pictured below with her Science Teacher, Mr. Ronald Scott, and SUEZ Communications & Community Relations Manager, Stephanie Raddatz); 2nd Place, Marie Sellin, Timberline High School; and 3rd Place, Delilah Davis and Kayla Thomas, Boise High School. Timberline High Tennis Repeats as Champions of Capital Inviational Tennis Tournament: The Timberline Tennis Team (pictured) competed against a field of 32 teams to take home first place in the recently held Capital Invitational Tournament (April 28, 29, 2017). The tournament is in its 37th year and included teams from all over Idaho, plus Washington and Oregon. The team is coached by Becky Koessler.

Boise District Students Take Top Honors at National Invention Convention:
The following Boise School District students took home top honors at the recently held
National Invention Convention
held in Washington, D.C. June 1-3, 2017. The event provides a live, in-person opportunity for youth inventors and entrepreneurs in grades 4-12 to display their critical thinking skills through inventing, innovating, and entrepreneurial activities. Out of 300 students from grades 4-12 representing 14 states, Idaho again had one of the highest percentage of attendees to winners ratio = 38%, reported contest organizers. "The head notebook judge took me aside and said Idaho had the best notebooks he has ever seen," said Invent Idaho State Coordinator Beth Brubaker. "He's been doing this for more than 30 years and actually created the Connecticut Invention Convention logbook. He said all of our Idaho logbooks put theirs to shame and he wants Idaho's notebooks to be the model for all other states!"

Boise District Educator Selected to National Board:
Tony Fitzpatrick, (pictured) Athletic Trainer, Timberline High School, has been selected to serve on the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Directors. Mr. Fitzpatrick, MA, LAT, ATC, has dedicated the last 29 years to the Boise School District, the last 19 of which have been at Timberline High School. He is currently the school's head athletic trainer and sports medicine instructor and previously served as a biology instructor.
Fitzpatrick has served his profession in numerous volunteer roles at the state, district and national levels. He was a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association Secondary School Athletic Trainers' Committee and District Secretaries'/Treasurers' Committee. He held several positions with the Northwest Athletic Trainers' Association including four years as treasurer, six years as Secondary School Committee chair and four years as meetings coordinator. Locally, he was president, secretary/treasurer and secondary school representative for the Idaho Athletic Trainers' Association, each for six years.
In 2014, Fitzpatrick was inducted into the Northwest Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame; he received the organization's Outstanding Service Award in 2008. He was honored with NATA's Most Distinguished Athletic Training Award in 2010, and Athletic Training Service Award in 2008. Originally from Anaconda, Montana, Mr. Fitzpatrick received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Great Falls and Boise State University where he also earned his master's.
The National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) will formally welcome Mr. Fitzpatrick as a new Board Member at its 68th Clinical Symposia and AT Expo at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, June 26-29, 2017. Mr. Fitzpatrick will succeed NATA's outgoing District Ten director Cari Wood, ATC.
Boise District Educator Receives Recognition:
Patrick Moore, (pictured) Social Studies Teacher, West Junior High School, received an Honorable Mention in the 2017 James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation competition. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation offers $24,000 James Madison Graduate Fellowships to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Fellowship applicants compete only against other applicants from the states of their legal residence. As funding permits, the Foundation plans to offer one fellowship per state per year. The selection committee wrote to Mr. Chris Taylor, District Social Studies Supervisor: "Patrick's receipt of Honorable Mention reflects the Selection Committee's appreciation of your strong endorsement as well as the quality of Patrick's application. The number of applicants varies from year to year, but many recipients of the Honorable Mention designation are awarded a James Madison Fellowship in subsequent competitions."

Free Summer Meals: Boise School District will once again participate in the federally-funded Summer Food Service Program. Summer meals will be provided to children ages 1 through 18 at a number of school sites without charge. Breakfast and lunch are served Monday through Friday beginning June 5th through August 4th.

25 Scholarships Available to Idaho Underserved Students: There are 25-30 Scholarships available to underserved students in Idaho. This was made possible by a recent grant from Idaho STEM Action Center. MentorsCloud.com is the grantee to work with communities/organizations to provide this STEM educational opportunity to those students this summer. To apply for the scholarship, students/families should visit MentorsCloud.com.
