DEAR FRIENDS,
It is so good to see our members and friends return to the area for the summer season. Our year-round folks have been keeping everything going this winter and we are forever grateful for that.
There have been some additions to the building which add to the beauty and meaning of our Center.
These stunning works of art now adorn the west wall of the Social Hall. The work of Smadar Livne, award-winning artist born in Israel, the paintings are mixed media acrylic on canvas. Blending photography and imagination, subtle messages are painted on each piece, and require time for observation and reflection. Thank you to our anonymous donor for this special contribution to our Center and to our Architecture Art and Artifacts Committee for their guidance.
As you enter the Center kitchen, a lovely plaque in commemoration of long time Sisterhood President, Vivian Fitts, welcomes you. Thanks to all those who donated towards this wonderful remembrance.
We have lots of great programs planned for this summer. Our two-page calendar will be available at the Welcome Back Brunch on Sunday, June 5. By the way, please call the office to make your reservation.
Our first Shabbat on the Beach is scheduled for June 2nd at 6:00 PM at the Beach in Loveladies, just south of St. Clare Church. The first in the series of documentaries, "Body and Soul: An American Bridge," is scheduled for Sunday, June 11 at 7:00 PM. The film is also being screened at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. Zumba classes begin on June 22nd and Drop in Havdallah starts June 17th.
Many thanks to those who responded to the Ad Journal campaign. We reached our goal of $10,000 and more. Please get your reservations in for the Gala on June 25th. It should we a wonderful evening.
Click here to read the May issue of the Ocean County Jewish Journal: JOURNAL which features an article by Rabbi Jay and articles about our Gala and our three Bat Mitzvah girls. Thanks to Arlene Schragger for get our story out there.
I look forward to seeing you at our various activities. It should be a wonderful summer.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
This week we begin the book of Numbers and the Torah portion begins with God telling Moses to take a census. A census can be taken for many reasons, but it is pretty clear that this one is taken as a means of determining how many men are available for the upcoming battles that God anticipates the Israelites will be involved in as they wander the desert and when they enter the land of Canaan. It must have been a bit disconcerting for the people to consider the prospects of battle from their weakened position as former slaves. It is sad to note that war and conflict has simply been a part of human existence forever. But as we say, God willing all is well that ends well; and it never hurts to have God on your side.
The above, very brief summary having been established, it is propitious that we read this Torah portion this week. It is a good time to take our own census of sorts. In the last few months we have been an active community. Let's look at a short list:
- We had our community Seder hosted by Sisterhood with well-attended Passover services,
- Through the winter months we have had Friday night services, Torah Study and Saturday morning services.
- We had a series of movies on Saturdays after Shabbat.
- We had an interfaith service, in which over 130 people participated, that featured a sermon by Pastor Roy Minnix, song selections by the Island Singers, and an Oneg Shabbat sponsored by Sisterhood with delicious desserts.
- We have had the Bat Mitzvahs of Thea Rosenzweig and Meghan Doctor.
- Next week, in addition to a full complement of Shavuot services.
- This summer, among other things, we will have the Bat Mitzvah of Zoey Brown, A Baby naming for Sienna Eve Cooper, an Auf Ruf for Aaron Tepper and Tricia Thomas and then their wedding, and the Bat Mitzvah of Alexa Daley.
- We will be having our Five N' Thrive N Anniversary Gala on June 25th which will honor the Herb and Selma Shapiro, Edd Dreyfus, Sherry Fruchterman, and Jeffrey Shapiro.
- We will have a Three Female Cantors concert, and two concerts by Bart Shatto.
- We will be having a speaker from The Technion and a Men's Club Brunch featuring A speaker from CAMERA.
- We will be having a series of documentaries.
- I will be teaching a class on Jewish Ethics, a class on Jewish Wisdom, and a class to teach the Jewish prayer service
- We will be having a Coffee House featuring the music of Carl Steinberg.
- In addition, we will be having our full complement of Havdallah services, Beach services, Bazaars, Mah Jongg, etc!
- Through the entire year, the building is chock full of people, learning, praying, singing, cooking, and spending precious time together.
Our blessings continue.
This is truly a census to bring joy to the Senses. We are amazingly busy for a synagogue on an Island whose prime time is the summer. Kol Hakavod to everyone who has been involved in making all of the above happen. A community is only as strong as the folks who become involved.
My hope and prayer is that we each feel empowered to become a part of the census. If there is programming that anyone would like considered, or subjects that you would like to learn, please reach out to me, or let someone on the Board know. The opportunities and possibilities are limitless.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS.....
|
Mitzvah Day was sunny with moderate temperature - just a perfect day to plant and clean up around the Center property.
Thank you to all who participated in the planting and the baking:
Howard Fruchterman, Fred Schragger, Arlene Schragger, Sam Sisenwine, Jeri Riffle, Ben Riffle, Sue Davis, Dan Valentine, Cliff Farin, Jody Brusilow, Lynne Berkowitz, Joel, Jenna Marcy, Kevin Marcy and Erica Marcy.
Special thank you to Howard Fruchterman for selecting the lovely plantings.
GAN CREW
Now that the property is beautifully planted, we need volunteers to keep our beds weed free and the flowers watered. Under the leadership of Howard Fruchterman we have formed a Gan (Garden) Crew. Volunteers have already volunteered for a week (or 2) to be responsible for watering and weeding beginning on Monday June 5. The following folks have already signed up to be part of the "crew".

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
|
MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.
Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
AUDIO/VISUAL PROJECT
We are very excited about the decision of the Board of Directors to pursue the enhancement of the audio system for the JCC of LBI as well as the purchase of a projection system. Please send your contribution to the JCC office: 2411 Long Beach Blvd., Spray Beach, NJ 08008 and note on the memo line A/V Project.
