Download music, movies & books with Hoopla.
Beginning June 1, all Milwaukee County library card holders can access Hoopla, a digital download platform that offers movies, books, comics and music. Hoopla is being offered on a trial basis thanks to generous funding from Milwaukee County Federated Library System (see

The
2017 Summer Reading
theme, "Build a Better World", encourages kids of all ages to be constructive - whether they are building physical objects or positive relationships.
Kids can also build brain power with one of our book challenges! Programs for tots, preschoolers, readers, and teens run from
May 30 to August 12. Stop in at the library to join the reading crew and earn a reward packet of tickets, coupons, and prizes.
In addition to reading this summer, don't miss our popular Terrific Tuesday series, storytimes, craft programs, and events just for tweens and teens. Plus, big events for everyone like
Around the World in Shorewood and our annual
Summer Celebration.

JULIUS CAESAR ON THE LIBRARY LAWN
|
The 4th annual Shakespeare in Shorewood is Saturday, June 10 at 6:00 p.m.
Traveling actors, Stone Soup Shakespeare, return to Shorewood with their interpretation of Julius Caesar - one of the bard's most ill-fated tragedies, complete with ambition, conflict, power, and manipulation. Stone Soup Shakespeare uses Shakespeare's original texts, but strives to make his plays accessible for all with the addition of dance, song and modern costumes.
Bring a chair or blanket and your favorite picnic snacks and let the play take you away! Saturday, June 10, 6:00 p.m. on the library lawn (rain location: Village Center).

Gone Digital
We haven't bought hard copies of music or video in our household for over seven years (Well, maybe a little vinyl!), thanks to the availability of streaming and digital content. Last weekend, I called my 71 year old mother in law and she couldn't stop raving about her subscription to Netflix and how easy it is to stream videos on her iPad. If my family is any indicator, I feel certain that the greater library community is ready to try a new digital content source from the library.
Thanks to a Milwaukee County Federated Library System commitment to set aside a bit of state aid money for digital initiatives, all library card holders in the county will have access to Hoopla - the most comprehensive digital content platform for libraries - all summer long. Hoopla offers videos, whole albums of music, comics, eBooks and audiobooks for all ages. You can use your computer or an app on your smart phone or tablet to access content.
We'll have June, July and August to pilot this new format for library content, so please join us for a Summer of Hoopla!

June is Monarch Month in Shorewood.
The Village of Shorewood has proclaimed June to be
Monarch Month in Shorewood. Since taking the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors Monarch
Pledge, Shorewood school students and staff from the Library and Senior Resource Center have been working together to encourage creation and support of healthy habitats for monarchs. The Shorewood Monarch Project will be distributing free milkweed plants at the June 25th Shorewood Farmer's Market. The library will once again be raising and releasing monarch butterflies throughout the summer. To learn more about our community efforts and how you can help, visit the

THE HIDDEN IMPACT OF SEGREGATION

Reggie Jackson presents The Hidden Impact of Segregation in Milwaukee County on June 6 at 6:30 p.m.
We're happy to announce that we have rescheduled the Hidden Impact of Segregation in Milwaukee County with Reggie Jackson!
In this presentation,
Reggie Jackson of
Head Griot of America's Black Holocaust Museum will discuss how Milwaukee became the most segregated metropolitan area in the nation and the wide ranging impacts of segregation on the community at large. This program is presented in partnership with the Shorewood Senior Resource Center.

 Friends Roll Out New Way to Honor Friends, Relatives and Teachers:
Memorials and Special Occasion Tributes
The Friends of the Shorewood Public Library announce a new, easy way to recognize the readers, writers and book lovers in your life.
Beginning this month, you can use a new portal to create a tribute that will be featured in a library book in the Shorewood collection. Simply fill out a form online or in person to make a memorial or special occasion tribute bookplate.
Once your request is received, your bookplate will be created featuring your honoree, and your donation will support the library's collection and programs. Learn more on this month's blog post.
