"Summer, summer, summertime. Time to sit back and unwind..." or maybe not so much! Business is still abuzz at AIA Kentucky, where both of our annual awards programs are in full swing and we are preparing to attend several upcoming conferences.
We will head to St. Louis this month for AIA's State Government Network (SGN) Meeting - a
fast-paced, two-day conference full of education, networking, and innovative collaboration with colleagues, and government officials. Then, in August, the Council of Architectural Component Executives will gather in Portland for two more days of professional development that will aid us in our continuous mission to deliver exceptional service to the members of AIA Kentucky.
These are just a couple of examples of the countless educational opportunities that the Institute offers to AIA's leaders and staff in hopes of advancing the architectural profession, across the U.S. and beyond. AIA Kentucky Design Awards - Call for Submissions
It's still not too late to submit your design work for the recognition that it deserves! AIA Kentucky is accepting submissions for the 2017 Honor Awards for Excellence in Architectural Design, now until June 30th, 2017. Projects completed in the last 10 years are eligible and may be submitted in several categories, including this year's addition of Unbuilt Work. Call for Interest: AIA KY Leadership Opportunities
AIA Kentucky is seeking expressions of interest from members interested in serving in leadership positions on the AIA Kentucky Board of Directors. The position of Secretary for 2018 will be open, with preference given to an East Kentucky Chapter member to maintain geographic balance on the Executive Committee. This is a one-year term that traditionally leads to ongoing service in subsequent years as Treasurer, President-Elect and then President of AIA Kentucky. The Associate Director, to be filled by an AIA Associate Member, serves a one-year term on the AIA Kentucky Board, for the 2018 calendar year. Architect Members interested in the Secretary position and Associate Members interested in the Associate Director position should submit a letter of interest to Nominating Committee Chair (and past president) Jeff Stivers, AIA no later than Friday, July 21, 2017. Ballots for all 2018 AIA Kentucky Officers will be distributed 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting, per the bylaws, with ratification of election results at the AIA KY Annual Meeting during the September convention.

This is just a friendly reminder of a likely option to maintain quality medical benefits at the lowest cost. This program, through the AIA KY, merits your consideration if you currently offer medical insurance benefits to your employees - or are considering doing so.
Rate increases are higher than average for 2017. If you are a "grandmothered" group or "community rated" or don't know what either of these terms mean - please feel comfortable to contact us to briefly discuss this over the phone or in person. Lexington's NOMI Design was featured recently in an AIA Architect magazine article about their design and fabrication work of various scopes and scales. Check it out!
Kerr-Greulich Engineers Inc., a 34-year-old mechanical and electrical consulting engineering firm in Louisville, has named a new president and vice president.
Associate Ben Gries will step into the role of president and Leiah Roy will be vice president and director of mechanical engineering. Founder Don Greulich will remain with the firm as principal and CEO and Scott Setliffe will remain as principal and director of business development.
Six AIA Kentucky firm leaders were recently selected to serve as the 2017 Design Awards Jury for AIA Indianapolis. The Jury was chaired by April Pottorff, FAIA and included Michael Jacobs, FAIA Martha Tarrant, AIA, Susan Hill, AIA, Graham Pohl, AIA and Rick Ekhoff, AIA. The group met at Omni Architects on May 18, where they selected ten projects worthy of recognition. Those interested may check the AIA Indianapolis website after June 8 for an announcement of the winners!

AIA Northern Kentucky's current director on the AIA Kentucky Board, Raymond Mack, AIA, announced his upcoming move to Columbus, Ohio at the Board's meeting on May 23. Both AIA Kentucky and the Northern Kentucky section are disappointed to be losing such a fantastic volunteer leader, member and colleague. We appreciate Ray's many years of dedicated service to his state and local component and we wish him the best in his future endeavors!

Applications are being accepted for the AIA & Architects Foundation ARE Scholarship, now through June 19, 2017. Eligible applicants are Associate AIA members who are eligible to take the ARE. Recipients will receive study materials and funding to cover the cost of the ARE. More Info.
Apply for the Herman Miller Scholarship by August 1. Up to eight emerging professionals seeking licensure will be selected to attend the 2017 Healthcare Design Expo and Conference.

COTE Meets With EPA

Call for Proposals - Speak at A'18 in New York City!
Each year, the AIA Conference on Architecture features hundreds of speakers and an unrivaled range of education sessions on emerging trends, thought-provoking topics, practice strategies, and some of the most interesting ideas in architecture.
The Institute is planning its 2018 program and would love your help! If you're a subject-matter expert with a great concept for an A'18 education session, you are invited to submit your proposal by August 1, 2017.
Blueprint for Better
In May, the Institute launched the latest installment of its annual public awareness "I Look Up" campaign, which is intended to raise the visibility and understanding of architecture and the profession with targeted audiences. The latest developments include:
- AIA Television Commercial - This commercial will air on HGTV and Hulu for 3-4 weeks this summer, and again for 4-5 weeks in the fall. AIA also will be among the sponsors for HGTV's popular "Urban Oasis" home giveaway.
- Film Challenge - The third annual I Look Up Film Challenge will explore the life-changing impact architects can create in communities everywhere. Registration and submission of films will be ongoing from June 1 to August 13. Read More/Register.
- Paid Goggle Search - AIA's paid search optimization via Google will also run during the spring and fall flights on HGTV and Hulu. That traffic will be directed to the newly-launched, public-facing website www.topicarchitecture.com.
- Topic Architecture - Also known as TopicA, this public-facing website will build awareness among potential clients of how great design can change lives.
- The Architect's Voice - Do your part to get involved in the public awareness campaign through face-to-face communication with potential clients, community leaders, local businesses and in your schools. The Architect's Voice message book has tested messages to improve how you can describe to key audiences the value architects bring to any project.

The Last Word
I spent a wonderful day at Omni Architects a couple of weeks ago, observing the Jury deliberations for the AIA Indianapolis Design Awards. Six Kentucky AIA members (see list in Member News above) reviewed in advance over 40 projects submitted, and then spent a full afternoon in lively and thoughtful discussion of the top contenders. It was exciting to listen to their evaluations and follow their progress toward consensus on the winning projects. Many thanks to the Jurors for their excellent work!
This experience reinforced for me the wisdom of changes we've made this year to our own Honor Awards submittal format, which are similar to AIA Indy's approach. While we still require some basic project information for all submissions, the majority of the submission document can be designed to showcase your project in whatever way you decide (within space/size limitations). We've also added an Unbuilt category to encourage emerging professionals and others to share conceptual work and unrealized designs. So get those creative juices flowing and submit your best work to the 2017 Honor Awards program. Click here for more info.
And finally, I hope you'll take a moment to consider who among your colleagues - or persons outside the profession - should be recognized for service to the profession and/or contributions to the furthering the goals of AIA Kentucky.
