Bud's China Visit
 by Bud Surles

Over the last 7 years, BSCG has been actively involved in the RV Industry in China. As a nation, they have a great interest in making our industry an integral part of their economy and lifestyle.

As a part of this movement there are several companies who are working with the Chinese government to create a national park system which has many of the characteristics of our own. Because of my years with the National Park Service, we have been selected by one of the groups to examine properties for a potential inclusion into their network of camping and natural resource offerings.

In May, I personally made a journey to meet with my clients and to explore four areas. One was in southern China and the other three were in the northernmost part of the country. There are many challenges which lie ahead for the developers, but if the borders can be loosened up, and the security minimized, there are wonderful resources available to share with the world. It is our hope at BSCG that these beautiful resources can be preserved and made a part of the world's network of national parks.

We want to give thanks to our clients who have allowed us to be a part of this exciting time in China's preservation and presentation of their great natural heritage.

Positioning Your Campground for the Future
by Grant Ackerly, MAI, CCIM owner of Campground Valuation

As the owner of a campground business, it is easy to get caught up in the hectic nature of the day-to-day operations. There may be little time left to evaluate where the business is, how you got to where you are, and how you'll get to where it is you want to go. Yet it's important to find time to do an objective evaluation so you can effectively position your campground for the future.

A good starting point is an initial evaluation of the current position of your campground in the market place . The goal is to answer the following fundamental question: How does my campground "stack up" against the competition?  To answer this question, you can begin by looking at three key areas that make up the marketplace:

1) YOU
2) YOUR COMPETITION
3) THE CUSTOMERS

A constant reevaluation is necessary. So take a moment and objectively examine where you are today and where the market sees you tomorrow. The endeavor may be worth the potential reward you find.

RV Vacation Cost Study
Press Release from RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association)

RV vacations cost substantially less than other forms of vacation travel, even when factoring in fuel prices and the cost of RV ownership. For a four-person travel party, the study found savings of 27-62%; a two-person travel party saved 11-48%.

Research was conducted by PKF Consulting USA, and commissioned by RVIA. RV travel emerged as having a clear economic advantage over other forms of travel, regardless of the RV type.  As part of its analysis, PKF considered how fluctuating fuel prices might affect vacation costs. Their findings showed that fuel prices would have to reach more than $12 per gallon for a four-person travel party before RVing would begin to lose its economic advantage over other forms of travel. For a two-person travel party, fuel would have to reach $6 per gallon.
