The Gate | Summer 2017 Edition

Dear Gateway Community,
Summer is here! As I look back on the 2016-2017 school year, I am in awe of how much we have to celebrate. We just honored our fourth graduating class from Gateway Middle School and our 16th graduating class from Gateway High School. Nearly 100% of our 2017 high school graduates will be matriculating to college, most of them to four-year schools.
So many in our community - teachers, families, friends, staff, and volunteers - have given countless hours of their time to ensure the brightest future possible for our students.
On that note, it is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to our Director of Development and Outreach, Anna Heidinger, as she moves on from Gateway Public Schools to her new post at San Domenico School. Anna has helped shape us into a more effective model of public education with a wider impact. Please join me in recognizing Anna for her dedication, expertise, and the vision she has shared with us for the past three years.
In April, Gateway Middle School and Gateway High School were named recipients of the
California Gold Ribbon Schools Award
in recognition of our schools' innovative programs and student achievement. Among three finalist schools in San Francisco, Gateway was honored to receive two of the awards, a demonstration of our rich community efforts and how we are making a lasting impact on public education in San Francisco.
Our involvement in the continued evolution of public education is engrained in our mission and we look forward to embarking on new initiatives and policy discussions that will make a significant difference for
all
public school students and teachers, not just our own. In this issue of
The Gate
you will read about how we are doing just that by opening the Gateway Impact Lab and revolutionizing teacher compensation.
As we look to the future, we will continue to make our mark on public education and most importantly, show our students that they matter, that they are safe, and that they make our society a better place. In February, we approved a Safe School Zone Resolution that affirms our commitment to providing a safe learning space for each and every one of our students regardless of race, religion, and immigration status.
As we head into the summer, I am reminded that public education "takes a village." None of us can do it alone. Public education only works when families, friends, teachers, staff, and the community join forces to make it work.
Thank you to our friends and supporters whose partnership helps ensure that Gateway continues to make a significant difference in the lives of deserving public school students in San Francisco. It's been a fantastic year, and we could not have done it without your support.

Gateway Honored with Gold Ribbon Schools Award
Gateway Middle School and Gateway High School were among 275 schools across California who were recently honored under the Gold Ribbon Schools Program. Only three schools in San Francisco received this award. Read more.

Ensuring a Better Future: Revolutionizing Teacher Compensation
In an effort to address the high cost of living in the Bay Area and recognize the expertise and vital contributions of its teachers, Gateway's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to increase salaries for all Gateway faculty by an average of 10%.

Over the last year, Gateway has been hard at work transforming an underutilized 5,600 foot locker room on the Gateway High School campus into a state of the art center for science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Read more.

Nadia credits her love of learning to Gateway's teachers and small class sizes. "Some of the best things about Gateway are the small class sizes and the strong relationships that students build with teachers," says Nadia. "I went to a very big middle school and it was really hard for me to get the help that I needed. At Gateway that all changed." Read more.

Cody M
Cody models Gateway's belief that all students should contribute to their communities, both now and in the future, however they can. He has been involved in peer resources, yearbook club, senior club committee, and has served as a student ambassador.

According to Xzalyn, Gateway has had a huge impact on the person she has become. "I came into Gateway not knowing much about myself and lacking confidence, but now I am leaving feeling confident and proud of who I am. I became a stronger person at Gateway."

Gateway welcomed nearly 75 professionals from various career fields to Career Day which provided students with the opportunity to hear about real-life work experiences.
