SINGING AT THE 10:15 SERVICE THIS SUMMER

The choir's last "robed & sitting in the choir pews" Sunday is June 11; after that, congregational singing will be exactly that: the CONGREGATION, minus leadership from a choir.  This lasts from June 18 thru August 20.  Be assured, during this time items are chosen very carefully to make sure they are all "reasonably to extremely" well-known.  Psalm 100, verse 1, notes  "Be joyful in the LORD all ye lands; serve the LORD with gladness and come before his presence with a song!" - LET'S DO THAT!

One of the great Renaissance English composers, William Byrd - his genius often compared to Beethoven, had some words about singing that ring true today!  Great observations, and spelling is the original.

William Byrd's Reasons to Sing
The preface to a book of songs by William Byrd, published in 1588.

Reasons briefly set down by th'auctor, to perswade every one to learne to sing.
First it is a knowledge easely taught, and quickly learned where there is a good Master, and an apt Scoller.
2. The exercise of singing is delightfull to Nature & good to preserve the health of Man.
3. It doth strengthen all the parts of the brest, & doth open the pipes.
4. It is a singular good remedie for a stutting & stammering in the speech.
5. It is the best meanes to procure a perfect pronunciation & to make a good Orator.
6. It is the onely way to know where Nature hath bestowed the benefit of a good voice (implying a "soloist"-type singer): which guift is so rare, as there is not one among a thousand, that hath it: and in many, that excellent guift is lost, because they want Art to expresse Nature.
7. There is not any Musicke of Instruments whatsoever, comparable to that which is made of the voyces of Men, where the voyces are good, and the same well sorted and ordered.
8. The better the voyce is, the meeter it is to honour and serve God there-with: and the voyce of man is chiefely to be imployed to that ende.  omnis spiritus laudet Dominum.

Since singing is so good a thing
I wish all men would learne to sing.

A Plea for Help From the Gathering

making_bread_hands.jpg

So many regulars will be out of town the last two weeks of May that The Gathering needs help...badly!  They need all the help they can get! Also if people could start thinking about Summer, there are many weeks when our regular crews are on vacation and we need fill-ins.

We need lots of extra hands in the summer.  The contact person is Niki Nash (407) 616-7754 for information and to schedule your time with this important and life-giving ministry of SMC.
THANKS!

Pentecost Sunday is June 4th and we'll celebrate with a special Dinner on the Grounds following the 10:15 service.

Everyone is invited to wear red that day signifying the arrival of the Holy Spirit in tongues of fire. Marci Arthur and her chefs from Truffles & Trifles will prepare a beautiful RED spaghetti dinner.

To RSVP please contact the church office by phone at
407-843-8448 or [email protected].
 New Communications Tools Debut

One of our core premises here at St. Michael's is to be outwardly focused on those who are not yet members. Inviting others to worship here is a great way to put that premise into action. The most effective means of attracting newcomers to any church is a personal invitation from a parishioner.

Survey after survey shows that three quarters of people say they would go to a church if a friend, neighbor or co-worker invited them. The easiest way to introduce the subject is to ask, "Do you have a church home?" And if the answer is no, just say, "St. Michael's means so much to me and my family.  I would love it if you would visit us sometime." It is that simple.

To make the invitation even easier, we created St. Michael's business cards with all the pertinent information that you can share with those you want to invite to worship with us.  The cards are located in the Narthex, on the Greeter's table and in the church office. Take a few with you the next time you are in church! Keep them in your purse, wallet or car -- you never know when God might present you with an opportunity to share His word and our church!

New in the Pews!

A new "Get Acquainted" brochure to answer questions newcomers may have about what to expect during the service is now in the pew boxes. We all were newcomers at one time and we want everyone to be comfortable while worshipping with us.

We hope you will find these new communications tools helpful and useful.  Special thanks to Vestry member Betsy Culpepper for her ongoing work to improve SMC's communications!
