Nourishing our students so they are ready to learn!
Dear TTUSD Families,
As we wind down the school year and prepare for summer, we have exciting news to share.
One of our own was named as Child Nutrition Employee of the Year! Congratulations to Carol Casey-Smallman at Tahoe Lake Elementary! Carol has been with TTUSD for the past 15 years and is an excellent Food Services employee. Carol loves her students. She makes sure they have a complete meal and encourages all kids to have fresh fruits and vegetables on their trays. Carol is well-liked and recognized by all her students and takes great pride in her kitchen operations. Way to go Carol!

We are proud and fortunate to introduce our new Administrative Secretary, Romina Branje. Romina comes to our department with a vast knowledge of fresh food, catering and customer service.  Romina is originally from Chile and lives with her husband and son in Truckee, since 1999. As a long term resident, Romina has worked in our community in various roles, including at The KidZone - Children's Museum in Truckee as well as in the Food and Beverage Department at Northstar California.

With the warmer weather, we encourage students to try our salad bars filled with delicious seasonal varieties of strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes and more.

This summer, we are very proud to be offering our summer feeding program which includes free meals for all children 18 and under at three sites. More information is below.

For our Class of 2017, we congratulate you on your upcoming graduation and wish you the best in your next chapter!

FREE summer meals for our children!

Children need good nutrition all year long, and we realize that when school is out during the summer months, some children no longer have access to even one nutritious meal each day. Research shows a lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins, so we have our "Seamless Summer meals" to help fill the gap. We want to ensure that children get nutritious food during the summer months so that they are ready to learn during the school year.

Join us daily at these sites where FREE breakfast and lunch will be served daily to any child 18 & and under.

THE B-FIT Theme is Go Green!
Food is wasted when we buy more than we need, store it incorrectly, throw away leftovers and cook too much. When we throw away food, we also waste all the water and energy used to produce, package and transport food from the farm to our plates. This waste creates significant environmental impacts and is costly to family budgets.

U.S. Food Waste Facts:
· 40% of all food in the United States is wasted
· 25% of all freshwater we consume goes to produce food we never eat
· 4% of the oil we consume goes to produce food we never eat
· $166 billion (retail value of preventable waste) is spent on the food we never eat
· 135 million tons of GHG emissions are created by the food we never eat

These numbers are for our whole food system-farms, processors, retailers and households.

Did you know that ...
- the average American household throws out 25% of the food they purchase?
- the average American family of four tosses out more than $1,600 a year in wasted food?

Reducing food waste is an easy way to trim your grocery bills and reduce your environmental footprint. It only requires small shifts in how you shop, prepare, store and serve food.
May's Harvest of the Month is Salad Greens and Spring Onions

Lettuce is the second most popular vegetable in the United States, just behind potatoes. The average American eats approximately 30 pounds of lettuce each year, and California leads the nation in the production of leaf lettuce, head lettuce, and Romaine lettuce.  Salad greens are an excellent source of vitamin K and vitamin A and a good source of folate and vitamin C. The darker the greens, the more nutrients.

Spring onions have a white or red bulb with long stems and are often sold in bunches. They are immature bulb onions. Spring Onions are sweeter than regular onions and can be eaten raw or cooked. They are high in vitamins C, B2 and Thiamine.

This is our last tasting for this school year. We will have all new fruits and vegetables to explore next year!
