Dear Saint Rose Families,

Last week was a celebration of Teens High On Life Week, a week dedicated to positive decision making and a reaffirmation of the potential that our middle school students possess.  A big thanks is deserved to Mrs. Elizabeth Ravas and her entire team of supporters that made the entire week possible.  Mr. Hoolver is central to our successful 5K.  His support through the year helps students do what appears to be intimidating and even impossible for some of us.  We had a thrilling race despite the rain and cold weather. I don't think that the elements bothered anyone once we started to run.
It was a week dedicated to Catholic Faith, Servant Leadership and personal growth.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bryon Borgelt
Principal

Parent's Club

Thank you to all of our parents and volunteers! It is because of you that we are able to have such successful school events.

The Pirates Parents Club has been very active lately.  Thank you to Mrs. Jenny Borgelt for organizing the elementary "Moana" Movie Night last week.  The students had a blast munching on popcorn and hanging out with their friends.   Thank you to Mrs Erika Shavulsky and her team for organizing treats throughout Teacher Appreciation Week.  The faculty was treated to a wonderful baseball themed lunch today.

For the 2017-2018 school year, we are looking for a Trunk or Treat Chairman and a Family Fun Night Chairman.  Being a chairman does not mean that you are solely responsible for the event.  We encourage all chairman to enlist the support of other parents.  A chairman is simply the point of contact and someone who helps to coordinate the volunteers.  If you are willing to help, please email Keri Struckholz or Bryon Borgelt.

 Lifeskill of the Month:        Perseverance

The lifeskill for the month of May is Perseverance. As a school we are focusing on ways to instill the character trait of not giving up when things get tough or difficult. As a way to reinforce this lifeskill at home, here are some ideas you can incorporate as a family.

1.   Have family game night and work through ways to continue a losing game without giving up.

2.    Practice a skill that is difficult for 5-10 more minutes than normal. Gradually increase the goal.

3.    Promote completing chores around the house with a family chore chart. Have children complete the task to the best of their ability, rather than rushing through.

For more resources on this lifeskill, feel free to visit these websites.

IMPORTANT PARENT NOTICE FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR:
Dear Parents:
Some of you may have heard of the book and Netflix series titled Thirteen Reasons Why, which is quite popular among teens/pre-teens currently. This book and series is about a young girl who commits suicide and she mails audio tapes to her classmates as to why they are a reason she took her own life. The series is reported to be quite descriptive and graphic and may promote negative thoughts among viewers or trigger unsafe feelings in children who may be struggling with mental health issues.  Unfortunately, this book and series promotes placing the blame on others for retaliation purposes, rather than educating viewers in how to recognize warning signs of suicidal ideation and getting appropriate help. This is a great time to talk to your child about the topic of suicide to promote conversation within the family.
FACTS ABOUT TEEN SUICIDE
-Suicide doesn't just happen. It is reported that 90% of teens who commit suicide have a mental health disorder, such as anxiety, depression, or other disorders.
-Most teens who commit suicide have given warning signs, such as a change in behavior/school performance, verbalizing/writing about suicide, withdrawing from family/friends, etc.
-Talking about the topic of suicide can help someone who may need support and professional help.
-There is a decline in teen suicide due to early detection, evaluation, and effective treatment.

Dear Saint Rose School Families,

Last week, as part of Teens High On Life (T.H.O.L.) Week, the seventh and eighth graders heard Dr. Richard Paat, a local physician and medical missionary who travels to impoverished countries and assists the migrant workers in Northwest Ohio, speak about helping the local migrant workers.  Migrant families travel here during the summer for the planting and harvesting season, working 12-hours in the fields every day.  It is difficult for the parents, but also for the children who come up with their parents.  While the parents work in the fields, the migrant children attend school for religious education and classroom learning.  As part of my recycling program at Saint Rose, we are collecting NEW and/or VERY GENTLY USED, school supplies for the migrant workers' children.  The goal is for this to become an annual end of the year school year collection to support our migrant families.
I ask that through the end of the school year that you please send into school NEW and/or VERY GENTLY USED, school supplies for the migrant workers' children.  These items will be sorted by type of school supply, and then donated on behalf of Saint Rose School.  They will be used at the migrant schools for the children of migrant workers who have schooling during the summer planting and harvesting season.  Just think, instead of all of these supplies coming home and trying to decide what to do with them, they can be reused by those who are so less fortunate.  I am very excited about this program too as it does not create any new costs for Saint Rose School or our school families, and it also prevents these used and unused school supplies from being thrown away.  So, like the recycling program introduced at the beginning of this school year, this too will result in our throwing away less, thus, reducing what goes into landfills, while also helping those who truly could benefit for these schools supplies - we are paying it forward to others!  Through this we are teaching the students to think of others and become more aware of how fortunate they are to attend Saint Rose School.  We will all be living out the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy by participating in this program.  With this being an annual end of year collection, we can continue to support those less fortunate.

Thank you so much for supporting those less fortunate in our community and caring for God's creation!  We are all truly
BLESSED!

Very gratefully,
Gabriella Ravas
