SDFAS Students have talent! This period of the year is one of the best to showcase the amazing variety of areas where our students excel. We had the chance to witness many growing various talents, in addition to their already extraordinary existing language skills. The Art Show this week, La Troupe, the Middle School theatre company who just returned from the Festival in Dallas, the Short film Festival last Friday, Junior Olympics this Sunday, the presentation of the music and theatre program coming up, the end of the year shows in June, the "Fête de la Musique", just to name a few. Through those programs, our students have various opportunities to express their imagination and discover new passions. At SDFAS we believe that music, art, theatre and sports are an essential part of our program so our students can develop extremely important skills such as communication, team-work, self-confidence and creativity. Over the years, we have refined and enhance those programs and plan to continue to do so as we recognize that besides promoting essential skills, these activities also bring something essential into their life such as: motivation, passion, the love of learning, and sharing their creativity with others.

Christian Jarlov, Head of School

Chers parents,

Return the form before Friday, May 19.

La Troupe: Dallas International Theater Festival
La Troupe au Festival de théâtre de Dallas

La Troupe performed their latest production "The Real Story of the Odysseus" at the Dallas International Theater Festival on May 12, 2017. It was a blast! The show was not only original and smart, humorous and energetic, but also extremely well-played by the 14 young actors. Congratulations to Ms. Addo who directed La Troupe and created a space for students' creativity and enthusiasm for all students of La Troupe!
Today we have library!
Aujourd'hui la librairie nous ouvre ses portes !

Every week, your children come to the library. For the little ones, it's quite the expedition since they have to cross the entire campus; bigger kids are more familiar with the path to the library since they can also come during recess to read or exchange a book.

The library period in the students' schedule is divided into three activities. First I read to the children: one book in French and one in English; we explain new vocabulary words, I invite them to retell the stories and imagine what happens next. Then students are free to explore the library and pick their favorite books. Many love reading picture books, by themselves or to each other ("I'll be the teacher now"); others prefer nonfiction books to exchange and learn about their favorite topics, from planets and ancient Egypt to dog breeds. Finally, students pick the books they'd like to check out and share with you at home.

You now see why your children are so excited about this special period of the week when, surrounded by books, they are free to dream and discover.

Parents day in Preschool
La journée des parents en maternelle

This year in PK0, parents were invited to do a craft project with their child. It is most important at this early age to be able to share such moments with their parents. Those are priceless memories. In Sophie's class the children made a mini-aquarium with their parents. In Tiep's class, they created a child-robot. And in Géraldine's class colorful octopus all danced together on the table thanks to the collaboration of parents and children.
In other classes, children had memorized a poem that they recited in front of their parents. Most of them offered their parents a lovely craft that they had made with their teachers' help.

Recess with the 1st Graders for our Kindergarten students
Récréation avec les CP pour les élèves de Grande Section

Last week, our Kindergarten students were able to share their recess time on the blacktop with the 1st graders. They collaborated together working on one of the new games purchased thanks to the last Jog-a-Thon funds: a construction game that allows children to use their creativity and assemble different pieces together, all in collaboration to achieve better results.

The Kindergarten students also spent a period in a 1st grade class, and were allowed to ask them questions. They also shared a lunch with them in the Elementary lunch area.

Thursday, May 11th, the Kindergarteners had lunch in the Elementary lunch area and shared their lunch time with the 1st graders. This collaboration is a way to ease the transition into the new areas that they will have to get familiar with starting August 28th.
Expert in weaving in PK2
Experts en tissage en Moyenne Section

Pictured: Grayson, Marie and  Shira.

A few weeks ago, the PK2 students had started to learn how to weave with wool.
After a few weeks of practice, they can now autonomously weave, and they tremendously improved on their skill.
This skill allows children to master their fine motricity, their sense of space, and being able to achieve a craft by themselves will strongly boost their confidence.
Middle School Math and Science Club: learning the research process

Pictured: Pabla, Jean Baptiste, M Franquet and Grégoire.

The students in the MS Math and Science Club have now been studying the effects of climate change for several weeks during the third trimester. Mr. Giot and Mr. Franquet have reached out to Ms. Calmer from the Scripps Institute at UCSD in order to incorporate teaching and support from an experienced research scientist. Thanks to her, students are learning the different aspects of the research process, and are studying several themes:

- Greenhouse effect

- Ocean acidification

- Extreme climate events

- Rising of the oceans

On Wednesday May 3rd, the students worked hands-on, studying specific experiments. With shovels, screens, red cabbage, coca, and other items, they tried to replicate the greenhouse effect, the ocean acidification, some extreme climate events, and the rise of the oceans.

Next: results' interpretation, reflection on the experiment protocols and their accuracy, followed by the design of a booth for each phenomenon.
Girls Varsity Basketball Dominate 24-0

The Girls Varsity Basketball Team gave a tremendous effort to defeat The Grauer School, 24-0, Tuesday afternoon. The team's tenacious defense forced turnovers and sparked offensive plays. The team was lead by Kimy Ghalie's offensive moves and Valentina DuRoure's ball handling. Lexine Arambulo's intense on-ball defense stopped Grauer from starting their offense. Ellie Coalier controlled the boards and cleaned up missed shots with her aggressive offensive rebounds. Chloe Gross's versatile play and Nolwenn Garcia's inside defense shut down any of Grauer's chances to score.
The Boys Varsity Soccer Team finished the regular season in 4th place, qualifying them for the IMSL play-offs. The team will take on #1 seed Chabad at Alliant today at 3:00 pm. The winner advances to finals on Thursday.
