Dear Colleagues:

Every month our Office of Development gives me a stack of letters that are addressed to alumni and friends who have recently made donations to our college. I always take these letters home with me so I can have some undisturbed time to read them and learn about the donors and the various funds they are supporting with their gifts. It's also the best way for me to focus on writing personal notes of gratitude.

As I signed and annotated the fresh stack of letters that were prepared for me this week, I began thinking about how our donors are widely distributed across the country. This prompted me to make a list of the different states where my letters of thanks were going to our supporters. It came to 23. I found myself thinking about all the other letters I'd signed this year that went to donors in states that weren't included in this latest batch, and I decided we should look back a few months and see how our supporters are scattered across the country.

The next day I asked our development staff to see how many states were represented by those who have given to our college throughout the last six months. To our amazement, we found that donations came from 43 different states. That number translates into a total of  86% of states in the U.S. that are represented by donors who have provided support to our college. All four corners of the country are included --from Anchorage, Alaska to Deerfield Beach, Florida, and from Readfield, Maine to La Jolla, California -- with hundreds of points in between. Amazing!

I was so pleased and impressed to learn that our grateful and loyal donors are spread far and wide. This shows how much an Ohio State education is valued, and it demonstrates how much people believe in the many things our college is doing as it's improving the lives of patients, educating tomorrow's oral health care providers, and making discoveries that will advance our profession. Our Buckeye Nation is truly everywhere!
