CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS!

The APMSA would like to congratulate all the Seniors on their upcoming graduation and wish them well on their journey through residency.

APMA Supports Unmatched Students

APMA is supporting students who have yet to match with a residency position. APMA recommends that students stay active with the profession as you continue to seek a residency placement. Many institutions and private practitioners offer preceptorships or research opportunities for graduates facing a gap year.

APMA is offering unmatched students and graduates a complimentary ad on the APMA website. These ads allow unmatched candidates to share their accomplishments, unique skills, and interests with the profession, including residency directors and those offering opportunities for unmatched students. If you would like to take advantage of a complimentary ad, contact APMA Director of Communications Peggy Tresky.

APMA also provides a variety of resources that may be helpful to unmatched students, including student loan resources, articles from physicians who did not initially match, advice from residency directors, and more.

APMA does provide a free membership category for those who do not enter a residency following graduation, which will ensure you continue to receive the member benefits APMA offers and stay connected with the profession. If you have questions, contact membership_ask_apma@apma.org

The picture was taken during our second year of podiatry school in the lab of the podiatry building where we were learning local anesthetic blocks. My very trusting classmate, Steven Goldstein, is the featured foot here with Dr. Kim, one of our assistants in the class talking me through the procedure. Local blocks are a crucial part of our practice. Whether removing an ingrown toenail or prepping the patient for surgery, blocks tremendously decrease the amount of pain and discomfort of the patient. Adding vasoconstrictors like epinephrine or anti-inflammatories like corticosteroid are expansions on the technique that offer multiple benefits for the patient.

This photo was taken in Key Largo, Florida. You would think that going to medical school in Miami would be especially difficult since the ocean is just a few minutes away. However, between classes, clinics, and exams, it is often hard to find time to fully relax! On a recent scuba diving trip, myself and a classmate, Tyler Gloschat, took the opportunity to practice stabilizing the ankle using an ACE bandage, since the need could arise at any moment. Being prepared for any situation is what makes a great doctor. Even when we’re not in class or clinic, podiatry will always be a part of our lives.

Special thanks to those who submitted many creative and talented photos for the APMSA photo contest. Do not be surprised if you see them used in future APMSA publications or on our website.

First KSUCPM Annual Student Alumni Weekend
What do a pig roast, a golf tournament, a Hall of Fame Dinner, and a Clinical Symposium have in common? They are all happening at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM) Friday, August 18th to August 20th. The Ohio Podiatric Medical Students Association (OPMSA) and KSUCPM are excited to be hosting the first annual Student Alumni Weekend and invite you to join us for this momentous occasion.

Saturday morning, OPMSA will host their 25th Annual Clinical Symposium, which will include podiatrists from all over the country speaking on various topics such as Charcot, foot and ankle reconstruction, and diabetic limb salvage. In the afternoon, Lapiplasty will host a procedure for the local residents and podiatrists. Also, a bone saw workshop will be held for all students in attendance.
Saturday evening, KSUCPM’s Annual Hall of Fame Dinner will feature the induction of two alumni in the Hall of Fame and the KSUCPM Student of the Year will be recognized. The event will feature excellent food, lively entertainment, refreshing cocktails, and a silent auction.

On Sunday, the final event of the weekend will be the Annual OPMSA Golf Tournament at Shale Creek Golf Course in Medina County. Teams of four will compete with all participants wining a steak dinner following golfing.

All proceeds from the weekend will go towards student scholarships to help those unable to afford medical school.
