Dear Volunteers of The Honeycomb Project,
The Honeycomb Leadership Council hive is buzzing! During our April meeting, the Honeycomb Leadership Council visited La Casa Norte in Humboldt Park, where we were greeted by two staff members who spoke about the organization. La Casa Norte's mission is to serve youth and families confronting homelessness by providing housing and other services such as education support, employment-readiness, case management, therapy, food, clothing, and transportation assistance. In the last year, La Casa Norte distributed almost 30,000 meals to their clients. The Honeycomb Leadership Council will be collaborating with La Casa Norte by implementing a family DIY project to benefit the organization, as well as preparing a meal for those living in one of their resident programs.

After hours of brainstorming and discussion, we decided to develop a service project benefiting the homeless youth population in Chicago. The topic itself struck a chord with us for a multitude of reasons, from the statistic that about 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT to Free Spirit Media's grounding video Nia and Kim about a homeless high school student. Therefore, on June 4th, we will be preparing a meal at La Casa Norte's Solid Ground, a homeless shelter for male-identified youth. A huge thanks to Whole Foods Market for sponsoring the meal!
During our May meeting, we dove right into the food planning. Catherine Tannen, Honeycomb co-founder, helped us choose the right meal to make, taking into consideration the necessary cooking skill level, special equipment, and ingredients. We also wanted to make the meal as healthy as possible without compromising the taste-- a challenge that even the most experienced chefs confront. After a short debate, we settled upon hamburgers as the main course with summer salad, potato wedges, and a fruity angel cake as the sides. We cannot wait to enjoy the food and camaraderie during the service event!
We also spent the May meeting planning the DIY Project and Hive Drive. For the DIY Project, family members will work with one another to collect school supplies for La Casa Norte. We hope that families not only enjoy time spent together, but that their participation will spark conversations about academic inequalities across Chicago. To participate in the Hive Drive, groups (block clubs, school groups, church groups, etc.) will collect quarters so that La Casa Norte's clients are able to do laundry. While many of us take doing laundry for granted, it can be stressful for those who cannot afford the dollar fees.
We're so excited to see how the cookout, DIY Project, and Hive Drive turn out! Hope to see you all at a Honeycomb volunteer project soon!
