Summer Camp 2017
Another fun
summer camp
for youth ages 5-12 is planned for June 26-30, 2017 at Max Thompson Family Resource Center, 11370 Hupp Avenue, Warren. The cost is $65 per 4-H member. Non-members pay an additional $10 participation fee. Aftercare will be available for an additional fee of $10 per hour per child until 6 p.m. Register online at

4-H Youth Council Animal Clinic - June 4th
Join the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council for its second annual animal clinic from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on June 4, 2017 at the Armada Fairgrounds, 74280 Fair Street, Armada, MI 48005. Open to the public - membership in 4-H is not required. Learn from local 4-H leaders, members and fair superintendents. Topics include proper fitting and showing, health and nutrition, and animal well-being. The animal classes involved in this year's clinic include hogs, fiber sheep and dogs. 4-H Family, Fun & Fitness Day was FUN!
4-H Family, Fun and Fitness Day (F3) was held on May 13
th
at the Max Thompson Family Resource Center. Participants spent the beautiful sunny day playing disc golf, volleyball, baseball, archery, soccer or running an obstacle course. Nutritional snacks and beverages were offered. The event, sponsored by a Walmart grant and facilitated by MSU Extension staff and teen counselors, was indeed FUN!

Group learns about the fur trade and wildlife on the Voyageur Canoe Trip
|
Macomb County 4-H'ers joined Lake St. Clair Metropark Nature Center Interpreter Dale for a ride in the 34-ft. voyageur canoe! The canoe is a replica of the Montreal style canoe that was used by French voyageurs in the fur trade era. The group learned all about the fur trade with Native Americans in Michigan and the wildlife they would encounter. The group even paddled by an active beaver lodge. Beaver was one of the most sought after furs in that time period. We ended the trip with a voyageur salute holding the paddles up high.

K-9 & Kompany 4-H Dog Fun Match - June 10th
The annual K-9 & Kompany 4-H Fun Match is June 10, 2017 at the Armada Fairgrounds, 74280 Fair Street, Armada. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Judging starts at 9:45 a.m. The event is open to 4-H members and cloverbuds.
Participants will have the opportunity to show their skills in showmanship, rally, agility and/or obedience. If registrations are postmarked by June 1, 2017, pay $6 per entry plus $2 for each additional class with the same dog. Model Rocketry Classes Open to All 4-H/FFA Students in Macomb County
BEGINNERS (1st year): We will begin building rockets on Wednesday, June 28th at 6 p.m. at the Armada
Fairgrounds in the Grange Hall. The grange is located at 74280 Fair Street in Armada - just north of
town.. Please use the Main Street entrance.
Bring Skill Level 1 rocket kit and white glue. Parents should plan on staying to supervise those members
under age 12. NOTE: DO NOT BRING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING TO THIS CLASS: paint, engines.
THIS IS A MANDATORY MEETING FOR 1st year ROCKETRY students who want to take rocketry with

More than just play time, 4-H Days values the experiential model of "Do, Reflect, Apply", and all materials are research-based. Youth are empowered to be in charge of their own learning, instilling a passion for self-directed, life-long exploration.

The purpose of the Macomb County Top 4-H'er Program is to give 4-H youth members, ages 13 through 19, the opportunity to grow and progress in their personal knowledge of 4-H history and vision. As a Top 4-H'er, you will become the role model for other members in your club and community as you promote Macomb County 4-H.
A Top 4-H'er is a self-motivated, enthusiastic leader who promotes 4-H using the skill, knowledge and leadership abilities acquired in 4-H with fellow members, area residents, community leaders, elected officials and non 4-H youth. A Top 4-H'er serves to strengthen the 4-H program through public relations. They are knowledgeable of 4-H, passionate and active in 4-H!
What are the benefits of being a Top 4-H'er?

Have you been interested in helping at the Armada fair? 4-H, FFA and other youth organizations that participate in the fair are looking for superintendents and judges for youth projects entered in the fair. We are currently looking for judges for our vet Science projects, educational projects, natural resource projects, culinary arts projects and photography projects. Also, we are looking for superintendents for horses and dairy goats. Professional expertise is not required, but judges should having experience in the project area they are judging. Please contact

Fair set-up is Sunday, July 30th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Armada Fairgrounds in Armada.
We will be setting up Barn #12, removing staples on table tops, papering tables with plastic tablecloths, determining where each club will set up their display, setting up club displays, as well as any last-minute set up in other barns.

Each club should be represented on this day. Volunteers will be helping clerk, carry exhibits back to barns, and tag with appropriate ribbons. Be sure judge signs Department book, return judge's books to Fair Office.
Sunday, August 13th: Arrange Barn #12 - Be sure tags are unfolded so that names can be seen, clean rods before hanging quilts and pin to secure. Ribbons should all be visible on all items. Be sure tag and ribbons are visible such as on lower corner of quilts or on the front of picture frames. Arrange entries in the barn after judging is complete. Be sure all ribbons are on each item and clearly visible. Set up fencing to secure areas.
Monday, August 14th through Sunday, August 20th, volunteers shall assist in clerking ALL youth shows, passing out ribbons/trophies and manning all gates, most importantly the horse arena gates and anything else required during the shows.
Check-out is Sunday, August 20th: Assist collecting items for exhibitors. Match tag numbers to items. Perishables are to be tossed out. Attach ribbon to tags for pick up. Clean-up on Sunday night is mandatory.

Annual Macomb Demo Garden Plant Exchange - June 3
The Annual Plant Exchange will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 9 a.m.-Noon in the parking lot of the MSU Extension office at 21885 Dunham Road, Clinton Township. Please know something about the plants you may wish to exchange. No invasive species please! Don't have plants to exchange? Come anyway! There will be Demo Garden plants available for a donation and an orphan table for plants that are free for the taking. Bats of Michigan, Bat Conservation Organization - Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Learn about bats in your own back yard. Often misunderstood or overlooked, bats play a key role in Michigan's environment and economy. During this live animal program you will learn why bats are important to the state, where Michigan bat species are located, and how to identify them. Learn about from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Mt. Clemens Library, 150 Cass Ave., Mt. Clemens. $5 each for MCMGA members + 2 guests. All others pay $10 each. An MCMGA quarterly meeting will follow. summer, Michigan Sea Grant Extension will provide Michiganders (and visitors to Michigan) with the opportunity to learn about the Great Lakes by being on the Great Lakes. Cruises depart from Lake Erie Metropark, with cruises on the lower Detroit River and Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair Metropark, cruising Lake St. Clair.

season offers more than 20 educational cruises around themes such as Fisheries, Wildlife, Wetlands, Shipwrecks, Lighthouses, Weather, Shipping and more. Cruises for educators wanting to enhance the use of Great Lakes content in their teaching are also provided, with stipends.

Lake St. Clair Fisheries
- This is not a fishing cruise, but it definitely is a "fishy" cruise! Learn first-hand about the fish that are found in Lake St. Clair, many of which are available for hands-on examination during the cruise. We will be joined by a Michigan DNR Fisheries Biologist and rendezvous with their research vessel while out on the lake to observe fish tagging, measuring and other research operations.
Warfare on the Waterfront
- The War of 1812, World War II, and even the American Civil War have all shaped the Detroit River and western Lake Erie. Long after the end of hostilities, remnants of this military presence can still be found. Join an Interpreter for an in-depth look at these conflicts, their sites and stories, and see how they impacted the region and the world.
Shipwreck at Sugar -
Just under the waves off a crumbling Sugar Island dock lie the remains of a vessel sank in 1945. Travel with our resident historian to the wreck site to learn about the S.S. Seabreeze, the story of how it got there and the circumstances surrounding its mysterious sinking.
Birds, Boats & Booze (4 hour history cruise)
- Many things brought people to the St. Clair River Delta Flats area. The abundant wetlands brought duck hunters and fishing. Wood boats and passenger steamers brought tourism and recreation, and Prohibition brought rumrunners and speakeasies to the region. Spend a little more time in "the flats" with us as we cruise farther up the South Channel and share a little of the past including stories of the big hotels, Tashmoo Park, Chris Craft boat building and more.
Great Lakes Science for Kids
- Learn about the ecology of Lake St. Clair or Lake Erie, by using the tools a Great Lakes Scientist uses to determine water quality by studying the plants and animals of the lakes. Try your hand at using a plankton net, bottom dredge, water testing kit, underwater camera, and binoculars to discover the exciting nature of the lake and become a Great Lakes Scientist!

2017 Michigan 4-H State Goat Show
This exciting, hands-on opportunity - presented by Michigan State University
Extension
4-H Youth Development
- provides participants with opportunities to (1) demonstrate their knowledge and skill in showmanship and (2) take part in classes such as dairy, fiber, Boer, pygmy and specialty breed, as well as driving and pack classes. The show has wonderful judges who focus on educating youth as they compete. It's a great show for youth to attend!
Who Should Attend?
- Exhibitors must be Michigan 4-H'ers who are 9 to 19 years old, as of January 1, 2017.
- To participate in the Cloverbud Division, youth must be aged 5 to 8 as of January 1, 2017.

Heartland Rabbit and Cavy Show
The 4-H Heartland Rabbit, Cavy, and Poultry Show is coming up on June 10, 2017, at the Clare County Fairgrounds. This is a sanctioned show and will also include Cloverbud events free of charge. The Clare County 4-H Small Animal Association also has a few extra fun events for participants including Costume Contest, Educational Posters, Photography (5x7 matted or framed), Breed I.D. and Questions Challenge.

State 4-H Horse Show
State 4-H Dog Show - August 19
The State 4-H Dog Show is August 19, 2017 at MSU in East Lansing. This show offers agility, showmanship, obedience and service dog classes. The one-day show is open to participants aged 9 to 19 by Jan. 1 of the current year. 4-H members can exhibit up to two dogs of any breed. You must be a 4-H member but you don't have to be enrolled in a 4-H dog project to compete. Spectators are welcome!

Dairy Events
The 2017 4-H Youth Dairy Days event takes place July 17-21, 2017 at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Four educational contests occur during the week, as well as a public education/outreach on Wednesday, July 19th.

Dairy Days entry information
contains all the rules and procedures for the educational contests, as well as all forms that must be submitted for participants. Youth 9-19 years old (as of January 1, 2017) are eligible to compete in all events during the week.
The Michigan Dairy Expo Showbook contains information about how to register cattle for Dairy Days, as well information about the breed association shows held on Friday, July 21.
The Great Dairy Adventure is a consumer education and outreach year. Dairy organizations from across the state, such as United Dairy Industry of Michigan, Michigan Milk Producers Association, Dairy Farmers of America, Michigan Farm Bureau, partner with Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan State University Department of Animal Science to host this event. There will crafts, dairy treats to snack on, the ability to interact with dairy farmers and dairy cows, and much more. The event is free and there is free parking at the Pavilion. Everyone is welcome!

The 2017 Michigan State Fair Youth Scholarship Program
Who is eligible to compete for a Scholarship?
- Animal/Livestock Exhibitors, Home Arts and Agriculture Exhibitors, and Urban Farming Youth exhibitors
- Home Arts and/or Agriculture 12 exhibitors in the areas will compete for up to twelve (12) $500
- Scholarships. Eligible to exhibitors eight (8) years of age and no older than twenty (20) years of age as of January 1 of the current year.
- Animal exhibitors at the Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair in the Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Goat,
- Swine, Rabbits, Poultry, and Equine areas are eligible to compete for a $1,000 scholarship (8 total scholarships). Eligible to exhibitors eight (8) years of age and no older than twenty (20) years of age as of January 1 of the current year.
- Urban Farming youth from cities of 30,000 people or more are eligible to apply for Scholarships based on their contributions to the production of food in their community. Youth Exhibitor: K-12th
- Grade. Youth must be five (5) years of age, but not over twenty (20) years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Date of birth must be on entry form. Open to Michigan youth only.
An exhibitor is only eligible to win one scholarship per year at the Michigan State Fair, but may enter more than one division.
