Principal's message:

What a tremendous outpouring of support for our teachers from our parent community this past week! The daily parade of food and treats - and massages! - was very much appreciated and was the buzz of the building. It couldn't have come at a better time, what with the start of testing and the slow turning towards the end of the year. Thank you to all who donated and participated, and a special thanks to our ADCA for spearheading the whole week - it couldn't have been done without you and it couldn't have been done better.

I want to applaud loudly for the huge and talented cast and crew of Hairspray that put on three tremendous shows this weekend. Judging by the huge audiences, I am pretty sure that all of you were there and can appreciate the skill and talent on display. It was our largest show ever - and arguably one of the finest. Just a wonderful show with a great story and lots of great showcases for our students. Special shout out to Jill Roos for her great leadership and directing on this, her biggest show. What a success!

Having spoken to some families that are disappointed in our plan for 8th grade promotion, primarily on the lack of extra tickets beyond the two allocated to each family. Here is the low-down for how we got to where we are: many (many!) years ago, Deal's 8th grade promotion was held in our auditorium. At that time, each family was offered two tickets per promoting student. This hardly accommodated who we had, but there was no alternative at the time. A few years back, we moved promotion to the Warner Theater at some cost but were able to offer additional family tickets. As our 8th grade grew and grew (470 at this counting), we knew we needed more space. Unfortunately, venues cost money, many are booked for many other things, and a large number of them are not sufficiently large or flexible for our program. Two years ago, we bit the bullet and paid for American University's arena. In spite of our concerns about promoting in a basketball arena, AU could not have been more welcoming, more flexible, or more pleasant. It just worked. We used Bender Arena again last year and were planning for this year as well. Unfortunately, AU notified us early on that Bender would be undergoing renovations right after the college year ended and Bender would be unavailable for this year. Our 8th grade team spent a considerable amount of time researching other places and solicited lots of ideas. The very best we could do was to sign up for the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington. We knew we would only be able to offer two tickets per family - but that space was all we could arrange. It wasn't a question of funding or some desire to limit family access to promotion: it was the best we could come up with. My eighth grade team spent a lot of time on this, and in the end I agreed that we would use Lisner. Each family can only have two tickets in this smaller venue and I know this is a hardship for some. There wasn't another reasonable choice.

I love the 8th grade promotion and I know many of you are looking forward to the event in June. We will do our best to make it as memorable as possible; we are even looking into distributing video live while we promote. I wanted to share this tale so that, while some are bound to be disappointed, our community understands why we are where we are.

There is also an important calendar "update" for our families. The 18th of May (Thursday) is a half-day for students. Dismissal is at 12:15. The next day, Friday the 19th, is our last Parent-Teacher Conference day of the year, and students will have no school that day at all. In reviewing the calendar, I know that we haven't had any half-days for students this year as the District has implemented a different model for professional development time. Thus I wanted to point this one out to you because it is different from how we have done things for the last 7 months.

My last item for this week's bulletin is to draw your attention to a meeting with Principal Martin on Tuesday at 8:00am. The meeting is to meet with her to discuss the interest in and potential for expanding the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programs to our high school. This is truly a parent-generated effort - no Deal staff will be present - and though I strongly support the idea, feel that any expansion of the program is a community and school decision. One perspective I would like to share is that there is no single form for the IB programs and my expectation is not on the shape the program might take but on whether or not there is interest for this move.

Take care, and keep in touch.

James Albright ( james.albright@dc.gov)

NB. It is really time to register. My hard-working front office staff is made available every day to help you take care of this. We need your registration in hand so we can plan for next year - students who are registered can be enrolled in classes and we can better set up our schedule. Please don't put this off - we are held accountable for the pace in which we accomplish full registration and we are definitely behind last year's pace. We will be waiting at the Welcome Center desk for you!

Have you lost something during the school day? Check out the lost and found section of the website ( http://alicedeal.org/lost-found/) for photos of items found in common areas at Deal, including in the cafeteria, field, and gallery. Lost items will be kept for approximately two weeks before they are donated. To claim an item, please ask a staff member in the cafeteria to guide you to the lost-and-found.

We make an effort to identify labeled items and make announcements for students to pick these up in the Welcome Center. Please help us by putting your full name on all lunch boxes, back-packs, and other items you bring to school on a regular basis.

Don't see what you've lost? Most classrooms have individual lost-and-found areas. Consider checking in with your teachers. You can also stop by the lost-and- found in the cafeteria as not all items may be pictured.
