WELCOME TO RUTIZ FARMS

Our farm stand won "Best of SLO County 2017" in the New Times reader's poll under the category of Farm Stands...a big thanks to all our loyal customers who took the time to vote for us.  To show our appreciation for your support, this coming Saturday, May 20, we will have a free strawberry sundae ( our strawberries and a scoop of ice cream )for all those who come by between 10am and 3 pm.

Our strawberry field is now open for u-pick each Tuesday and Friday from noon to 6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm.  Bring the family out for a fun time picking our delicious strawberries.  Bring your own containers or use our baskets to pick into.  The price will be $3.50 per pound, which works out to be about $3 per one pint basket ( our regular price when purchased already picked at the stand is $3.50 /basket ).  We will continue to have plenty of picked berries available at The Stand, along with all our other veggies and fruits.

What's in this week's Box
Grown on our farm using organic farming methods:
napa cabbage, carrots, salad mix, strawberries, beets, baby broccoli, celery and potatoes.
The Hass avocados are grown by Dave Righetti of San Luis Obispo.

The "Persian" cucumbers come from Ocean Breeze Farms in Nipomo. They are grown using pesticide- free farming practices. . The "Persian" cucumber is unique among cucumbers in that it has a thin skin that doesn't require peeling and has no bitter aftertaste.

Napa Cabbage Slaw
1 head shredded Napa Cabbage
3 grated carrots
1 tbs sugar
1/4 cup rice vinegar
2 tsp toasted sesame oil
2 tbs soy sauce

A simple recipe for roasted beets:
Heat the oven to 375°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Rinse the beets . Wrap completely in aluminum foil and place in the oven. Roast until tender and easily pierced with a knife, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Remove from the oven and let cool.
When the beets are cool enough to handle, peel using a paring knife or by pushing the skin with your fingers.
Slice the beets, drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. The tops ( leaves ) are also great to steam and toss with some butter.
