TMF Led Successful Three-day Conference
Engaged providers from all health care settings

TMF's conference, "The changing health care landscape: Driving innovation and improvement," in May was attended by 619 health care providers who heard from knowledgeable sources discussing topics aimed at navigating the changing health care landscape.

Dennis Wagner, director of the Quality Improvement & Innovation Group at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and one of his colleagues kicked off the presentations by discussing the National Quality Strategy and how CMS is working to build a better and smarter health care delivery system including payment reform.

Other presentations focused on sepsis and what identification and management strategies health care settings should use to treat this condition, and opioid misuse and reduction strategies for the estimated two million persons who have a substance use disorder involving prescription pain medication.

Antibiotic stewardship, a trending topic, was reviewed with an understanding that antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs and save millions of lives each year. However, it was also recognized that widespread, long-term use has led to an alarming rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic stewardship programs were suggested to help organizations promote the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics) and improve patient outcomes.

The social determinants of health such as behavioral patterns and social circumstances were examined in a context of how they contribute to the overall health outcome of patients including chronic disease and premature death.
