Book Reviews
The Force
By Don Winslow
Reviewed By Sue Wilder
Denny Malone is the "King of Manhattan North." He is a NYPD detective who heads an elite task force responsible for cleaning up the drugs, corruption, and guns in uptown Manhattan. He and his squad interface with the criminals and drug dealers as well as the various police agencies and precincts.
Over the years, Denny and his crew gradually step over the boundaries between good policing by the book and activities that are criminal. They start small when presented with opportunities to take a few dollars, but escalate to major drug heists and murder.
Unfortunately, corruption reaches all the way to the top of the police department and city government. The feds get Denny to start informing in a small way, but just as his crimes escalated, so does the level of incrimination required by the feds. Finally, the entire system of policing, government and crime are consumed by the investigation.
Mr. Winslow has written one of the best "cop" books since Joseph Wambaugh. His protagonist Denny Malone is characterized perfectly with his fatal flaw. The authenticity shows through the meticulous research. The dialog is pitch perfect, the setting is real, and the characters are well drawn.
As with his recent two books regarding the drug trade, The Cartel and The Power of the Dog, a reader will be hard pressed to put this book down. The Force is sure to appear on this year's "best" lists. Deservedly so. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and a MUST READ

Bone Box
By Faye Kellerman
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
Rina Lazarus and Peter Decker are back in a new and exciting novel by Faye Kellerman.
While Rina is walking in the woods near the couple's new home in Greenbury, New York, taking photographs of nature in all its beauty, she stumbles across a partially buried bone. The bone turns out to be human. As Rina's husband and his team of police detectives and forensic experts dig they find more bones.
The body has been buried for years with no evidence as to the identity. Decker and his partner, Tyler McAdams, realize that the body and possibly other bones in the same area probably belong to a missing college student from the Five Colleges of Upstate where Rina works. Decker and McAdams think they could be looking for a serial killer.
As in all of her books, Kellerman uses her unique ability to blend Orthodox Judaism into a thrilling tale that keeps the reader turning the pages as she gently explores the world of the trans-gender college student. I learn something new with each of her books.
Faye Kellerman is one of my favorite authors. She brings her characters to life, turning them into real people that readers can identify with. Her stories are well researched allowing her to expertly blend fact with fiction. Don't miss this one. William Morrow 27.99
