Welcome to our June newsletter.
Firstly we would like to wish all our Muslim clients and friends Ramadan Kareem during this holy month.
Now more than ever before, I believe we need to highlight the positive aspects of the region and there is no better way to do this than through art. As you will read in this month's newsletter, there are a growing number of important exhibitions showcasing Middle Eastern art and artists on a global platform.
Photography is a universal medium and in our Art Market section we have put together a selection of fascinating articles focusing on the subject.
In case you missed it, the
I AM exhibition featuring 31 women artists is on until 14th June at the National
Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman and further details about the London opening in July will be announced shortly. In the meantime, read Lisa Pollman's article in Art Radar about twelve photographers from the exhibition.

THE CREATIVE ACT: PERFORMANCE, PROCESS, PRESENCE

The Creative Act: Performance, Process, Presence is the second exhibition of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection. It brings together more than twenty artists of different nationalities and generations who have emphasised performance, process, and human presence in their practice.

TOBA KHEDOORI

Pérez Art Museum Miami
Toba Khedoori explores the artist's nuanced and powerful body of work. Born in Sydney, Australia in 1964, Khedoori has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1990. Her early works are notable for their precise draftsmanship and for their use of negative space-often at a very large scale.

YOUSSEF NABIL: I SAVED MY BELLY DANCER
Featuring actors Salma Hayek and Tahar Rahim, I Saved My Belly Dancer is a lavish production by Youssef Nabil (b. 1972, Cairo; lives in New York) filmed in high definition with a color treatment reminiscent of hand-tinted vintage photographs. The film is a hypnotic allegory of Egypt's cultural heritage and the shifting perceptions of the position of women in the region.

CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHY
MEHMET ÇEBI COLLECTION
A notable selection of intricate and beautiful calligraphic artworks dating from the 1960's to the present day. The exhibition will focus on two traditions, renowned for their glorification of the beauty of Islam through art. The first is an assortment of Hilye-i Şerif (The Noble Hilya), a form of classic calligraphic art. The second is a collection of tesbih (prayer beads), used for ruminative prayer.

GRAPHIC WITNESS

This exhibition considers the notion of the 'graphic witness', a term that harnesses the power of drawing to challenge and question the status quo, to record and reflect protest, as well as to bear witness to social injustices and the horrors of war.
Graphic Witness explores the way drawings can both document injustices and become agents that encourage us to act.

JUMANA EMIL ABBOUD / THE HORSE, THE BIRD, THE TREE AND THE STONE

The exhibition touches on existential questions about identity, loss, longing and belonging. Abboud hails from her homeland of Palestine, but her work invites us to weave stories of our own.

DOUBLE VISION

The exhibition title alludes to George Orwell's seminal work 1984 and presents a selection that includes Tracey Emin, Marcel Dzama, Anselm Kiefer, Bruce Nauman, Raymond Pettibon, and Thomas Ruff, as well as Turkish artists, tracing the steps of pluralistic thought through works of art.

SOHEILA SOKHANVARI
HEART OF GLASS

Soheila Sokhanvari is an Iranian-born artist whose multidisciplinary work weaves layers of political histories with strange, humorous and mysterious narratives.
Sokhanvari is interested in the use of metaphor to speak about inexpressible events, particularly with reference to Iran.

WAYS OF SEEING

Taking its cue from
Ways of Seeing, John Berger's 1972 critical text on visual culture, this exhibition explores the various formalistic strategies that artists employ to re-configure our perception of the world.
Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, "Ways of Seeing" presents contemporary paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos, alongside artworks that span several centuries.

FAHRELNISSA ZEID

Trained in both Paris and Istanbul,
Fahrelnissa Zeid was an important figure in the Turkish avant-garde d group in the early 1940s and the
École de Paris (School of Paris) in the 1950s. Her vibrant abstract paintings are a synthesis of Islamic, Byzantine, Arab and Persian influences fused with European approaches to abstraction.

Gholam: a film by Mitra Tabrizian
Starring Shahab Hosseini, winner of Best Actor at Cannes, 2016, for Asghar Farhadi's Oscar-winning The Salesman.
Gholam is the story of an enigmatic Iranian cab driver in London.
A man with no past, no future, no conviction, who still gets involved in the conflict of a total stranger and carries it through to the very end.
