New work on display in the gallery
We've refreshed the gallery with the latest work by Kay and the Yourist Studio Gallery Resident Artists, so plan a visit soon to see all of the exciting new pieces.

We're also pleased to introduce a new artist, Adam Shrewsbury, to the gallery. Adam's pieces, an example of which is shown at left, are inspired by tattoo and folk art designs.

Special studio visitors
On Saturday, June 3, six journalists will visit Yourist Studio Gallery as part of the spring 2017 press tour arranged by the Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The CVB holds these tours twice yearly with the goal of inspiring compelling media coverage of the art, culinary, craft beer, and cultural scene in the Ann Arbor area. Bringing the writers to Yourist Studio was a great addition to the itinerary, and the CVB is hopeful that it results in captivating press coverage to compel visitors to seek out art in the Ann Arbor area.

Layered image transfers with slip

Q.
I loved those quick and easy image transfers you featured in the May newsletter. Please give us more image transfer techniques.

A. Here you go. This video from Ceramic Arts Daily features potter Lauren Karle demonstrating her layered image transfer technique, which uses slips along with found patterns that Karle adapts for use on her pieces.

House by Olga Stowers
Ceramic Houses
A beautiful collection of intricately detailed and carefully constructed houses by Olga Stowers is showcased in this exhibition. You may have marveled at some of Olga's houses as they were under construction here at the studio.

Although Olga, who was born in Siberia and raised in Moscow, has a degree in finance, she says that she has always been drawn to art. Olga took up ceramics a mere three years ago here in Ann Arbor. As shown in this collection, she especially enjoys making houses and buildings.

Is it too early to start thinking about Ann Arbor Art Fair 2017? Believe it or not, Art Fair is just a little more than seven weeks away, so mark your calendars now. Kay will show her work at the Ann Arbor Pottery Guild booth this year. We'll have all the details for you in the next issue of the newsletter.

Stop, look, listen . . . and learn
Don't try this at home . . .

. . . or at the studio either.

But do watch as Australian master potter Bill Powell throws with fire! Why does he do this? Powell explains that "Flaming the pot at various stages stiffens the clay just enough to stretch and form the pot into shapes that are difficult to produce without making the piece with thick walled sections." Powell gives additional details about his process in the comments to the video, so be sure to read them, too.

Bill Powell is also a master of crystalline glazing. You can admire his spectacular pieces here.

Everything old is new again

Ancient pitcher
Ancient inspiration
for modern potters?
What's inspiring young, up-and-coming ceramic artists? According to a recent article in The New York Times, " The Beautifully Flawed Work of Emerging Ceramists," some of them are turning to the rustic, unrefined look of ancient utilitarian pottery to find a fresh approach to their art.

The article features the work of potters Alana Wilson, Romy Northover, Alzamora Good, and Akiko Hirai, "part of a group of female ceramists from all over the globe who are meditating on the beauty of imperfection, age and artlessness, borrowing ideas from the past, including the Zen Buddhist philosophy of wabi-sabi."

Northover observes that achieving perfection leaves no way forward, but "Imperfection, on the other hand, has no limits."

Thanks for Joanne Daniels for this tip.

Cink for sale

Cink pottery sink for sale
So what's a Cink? The manufacturer calls it "a self contained clay capturing, water filtration and recycling system specifically for the pottery classroom or production studio where running water may be limited or the plumbing system may not be able to handle or accept waste clay."

The Cink on offer is 10 years old but has never been used and is immaculate. The seller is asking $700 for the Cink, which cost $2195 new. The seller will deliver the Cink within 50 miles for the asking price. If you pick it up yourself, be sure to bring a van. The Cink dimensions are 39" wide by 24" deep by 50" high. It's not heavy but is largish.

Wheel's eye view of throwing?

Potter Ron Philbeck puts a batt on his wheel, attaches a camera to it, starts throwing, and dizziness ensues . . .

Is this what it looks like from the point of view of the wheel when you are throwing a pot? The wheel appears to remain stationary while the room spins around and around.

Meanwhile, at The Great Pottery Throw Down . . .

The semi-finals have arrived, and the main challenge is daunting. The contestants must slip cast bone china to create the pieces for an imaginative, translucent chandelier. Then they must assemble and hang their chandeliers. There will be droppage and breakage along the way. Which four potters will survive to make it to the finals?
