The Austin Liquors Wine Spotlight
W elcome to Eno-Files, an unpretentious look at wines from around the world complete with both deals and puns, brought to you by the good folks in the wine department at Austin Liquors!

That bottle is every bit as hefty as it looks.
I nnovation in wine is a rare thing.  There are always plenty of new gimmicks showing up, but doing things differently for the sake of trying something new is a rare, brave step indeed.  Add in an unusual, region-specific winemaking technique and Italy's reputation as a land of traditional wines and what you're doing is downright risky... good thing Casa Vinicola Botter knows what it wants.  Let me introduce to you one of the most well-realized experimental wines I've ever had, Botter's 2015 Gran Passione Veneto Rosso.

L ocated up in the northeastern corner of Italy, the Veneto is home to its own unique culture and winemaking traditions.  Shielded from harsh northern weather by the Alps and the tumult of Middle Ages politics by the (relatively) stable kingdom of Venice, the winegrowers of the region were free to indulge their peculiar habit of drying grapes into raisins before producing their wines - a tradition that continues to this day.  Normally associated with very expensive wines like Amarone, Botter's innovation is to take this "appassimento" technique and adapt it to the modern palate: a 60/40 blend of Merlot and the traditional Corvina grape, married to modern winemaking and oak aging.  The result is a thoroughly enjoyable, easy-to-drink red for a shockingly low price.

The 2015 Casa Viticola Botter Gran Passione pours a clear, deep ruby-red with hints of purple in the reflection.  A clean, intense nose begins with ripe black cherry and quickly opens up to black pepper, prune, vanilla, and licorice.  The palate is nearly dry, with a richly full body and luscious mouthfeel balanced by fresh acidity and rustic, grippy tannin.  Flavors of black cherry jam and smoked peppercorns harmoniously reflect the nose and linger throughout a surprisingly long finish, leaving the lasting impression that this superb wine was, indeed, worth every penny.

Pair with red meat and hard cheeses.  Greek and Middle Eastern fare would benefit from this wine's exotic nose, and it would offer a hell of a twist on steak au poivre.  This wine is ready to drink now but will improve for another 2-4 years.
