May Students of the Month
Sarah Jennison - 2017

Sarah Jennison is a senior who is actively involved in volleyball at North.  Sarah has been playing Varsity Volleyball since freshman year.  As a senior, she was named Captain of the team.  Sarah participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and will occasionally lead the meetings on Wednesday mornings.  She is also involved in Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and is Treasurer for National Honor Society.  Sarah’s favorite classes at North have been her math classes.  These classes were her favorite each year because of the teachers that made the lessons so enjoyable.  “Thank you to my math teachers for making math so memorable for me.”  One of Sarah’s favorite memories from North was winning the state championship for volleyball against Ridge.  They beat them in three games.  After the game, one of the girls had her dad’s police officer unit escort the team back to the high school.  The bus was able to drive right through the light near Beaver Brook instead of waiting for green.  Sarah plays volleyball all year round.  She plays for North in the fall, CJVA in the winter and spring, and beach volleyball in the summer.  Sarah also coaches the 13s regional team for CJVA during the club season.  Next year, she plans to continue playing her favorite sport at Ithaca College.  Sarah will be studying to earn her doctorate in Physical Therapy.

David Montes - 2017

Senior, David Montes will be attending Vanderbilt University next year where he will major in Biochemistry.  David’s favorite classes at North are AP Physics with Mr. Quinn and AP Latin with Mrs. Mullay.  They are two of the hardest classes he took, but challenging himself to see how well he could master each course’s material was a fulfilling experience.  Both classes felt like long-term missions he had to complete, making the experience more exciting than one might expect.  David has been a member of the Latin Club for two years and is a member of Latin, Science, English, and Math Honor Societies.  He has been a member of the Jazz Ensemble for four years where he plays 1st trombone.  David also spent four years in the pit orchestra where he played trombone and a bit of accordion.  Some of his favorite memories at North include applying for the NJ Scholars Program, writing his “personal creed” in AP English Language, hearing Mr. Andrew’s random bits of wisdom during jazz ensembles, being able to sleep after he finished his college applications, playing accordion in two AP classes and the winter Musical.  Outside of school, David participates as a “worship leader” for two churches.  He is responsible for the musical performances that take place during a regular service, holiday event, or youth group meeting.  David also volunteers for short-term mission trips over the summer in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.  This type of work may not merit any actual awards, but it has always been a satisfying experience.

May Athletes of the Month
Katie Higgins - 2017

Katie Higgins is happy she was able to be part of Unified Basketball at North Hunterdon this year.  Katie had lots of fun playing with her friends and teammates during the season.  She had 58 points in five games (11.6 average) and also averaged three steals per game.  Currently, Katie is on the Unified Track Team, where she runs the 200 meter and 400 meter relay races.  She also runs the 50 meter and 100 meter each year at Special Olympics.  This year, Katie won three gold medals in those races during the Special Olympics and in the Softball Throw!  She really enjoyed being part of those big events.  Katie loves how much fun it is to compete with the other students.  At home, Katie and her father are on a junior/senior bowling league.  Her best game so far is 170.  They play different teams each week and get to meet new friends.  Katie also enjoys her tennis lessons at Courtside Racquet where her teacher shows her how to serve, hit backhand, and volley.  Playing sports is important to Katie because she can exercise, have fun, and meet new people.
Timothy Schumacher- 2017

Pitcher Timothy Schumacher has been playing baseball for twelve years of his life.  Tim started playing because of his brother who played for a few years before him.  Some of Tim’s strongest skills in baseball are being able to be aggressive against hitters and being his best competitively in every game.  He has played travel baseball for many years outside of high school.  This summer, Tim will be playing baseball for the Flemington Legion.  At North, Tim participates in Student Ambassadors, Interact, and Special Olympics.  He also played basketball for North before focusing solely on baseball.  Outside of school, he participates in Bambino Buddy Ball.  This is a league for children with special needs to play baseball.  Tim plans to play baseball at The College of New Jersey.  He will focus solely on playing baseball at TCNJ while majoring in business.

Math Summer Packets

This year, we are again providing a summer packet for all incoming freshmen and North students who are enrolled in either Algebra 1 CP, Algebra 1 Advanced, Geometry CP, Geometry Advanced, Honors Geometry, Algebra 2 Advanced, Honors Algebra 2, PreCalculus ADV, Calculus ADV, and AP Calculus for the upcoming school year. New this year, we are providing summer packets for students enrolled in Honors PreCalculus as well.

These packets will be distributed to all current students and sending districts prior to the end of school and available for download from the math department website.

The students need to be sure to complete the correct packet since each is different and students will be tested on this summer review during the first week of school. If students complete the packet early in the summer, we suggest that they review it prior to the opening of the new school year so that they will be able to discuss any problems they may have in class.  The problems contained in the packets are considered prerequisite material, and it is important for the success of the class that your student has mastered them.

Summer Reading
Get set for summer reading
As you make your summer vacation plans, don’t forget about your student’s summer reading assignment. All NHHS students, including incoming freshmen, are responsible for keeping their skills sharp over the summer by completing the reading assignment for their grade and level of English class.

Students can check out summer reading books in the Media Center through June 14. For the best selection and availability of titles, students should get their summer reading books before the end of school.

In the fall, all students must submit a written analysis to demonstrate their understanding of the books. Students should be sure to read carefully and actively, taking notes to help them remember important elements of plot, setting, and character.

The  Summer Reading web site contains the assignments for each grade and level of English, lists of suggested titles for the free-choice portion of the assignment, and organizers for taking notes.
